I don't go out of my way to buy game guides since I'd like to complete a game at least once on my own. GameFAQs and other websites do a decent enough job of getting me out of a place I can't get through anyway.
However, my relatives tend to buy the game guides to the respective games they'll give me for Christmas and whatnot. Also, renewing my magazine subscription nets me quite a few complementary game guides. I usually read my guides either as a time killer or as a double-check for anything I might've missed in the first playthrough.
