Cool GFF Anime Club

Welcome to the GFF Anime Club. If you came in here for Cookie Monster, fat Cloud Strife, a potted plant, and a dog in a Wolverine costume then you'll be pleasantly surprised! If you came for anime well we got that stuff too. If you came to chat with other people about this business you're watching at the same time well then by golly you are in for a treat!

Every Tuesday and Thursday at 8 PM Eastern Time I will be streaming around two hours of anime from two series for around the run time of three episodes each for a total of around six episodes of that stuff from Japan. I'll also be running six episodes of a third series on the weekend (could be Friday, Saturday, or Sunday depending on my schedule).

"But how?!" you may ask. I've set up a webpage with all provided (even a chatroom!). Just visit it and it'll start streaming right away. Of course if it's not a scheduled time then it'll just be playing silly videos I grabbed from youtube. Give it a whirl.

CLICK HERE 4 DA ANIME CLUB STREAM

this contains the original post - you can ignore it:
Alright I'm sure a good number of you are familiar that I run the stream for Drink On. Last night after that event a good number of us stayed up to marathon Detroit Metal City with great success and thus I know that there is an interest for streaming anime around here.

I've been kicking around the idea for running a bi-weekly (now tri-weekly) event for a bit but now I'm pretty much ready to commit to it but I need to know what you guys would like to watch.

We'd be watching two series three episodes from each show for a grand total of six episodes a night. So for example it could be three episodes of DBZ and three episodes of Azumanga Daioh for the two week days, and finally six episodes of Cowboy Bebop on the weekend. If we had a show that was only 11 minutes per episode like Cromartie High or Detroit Metal City then we'd run five or six episodes to compensate for normal 22 minute episode run time. So yeah basically just like your run of the mill anime club except over the Internet.

So here's how it would go down: Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 PM to 10 PM EST.

Let me know if you're interested and what shows you'd like to watch. Also if we can get this thing rolling fast enough let me know if you'd like to start this week or next week.

I will be updating this opening post with more information.

Show Format

Tuesday&Thursday
  • First series for around 60 minutes
  • Second series another 60 minutes
Weekend
  • Third series yup yup yup 120 minutes
Use the list below to figure how it'll work

Well I'm thinking of uploading the entire showing for Tuesday and Thursday each week either as groups of individual episodes or use procaster to record the show to my computer and then upload that for people to download. So you could download that at your leisure if you missed the show or just can't make it but still want to follow along simulwatch style. Would that work for you?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Just to back up what I said in the last post I've created a test broadcast recording that lasts around 2 minutes of me skipping around two episodes of Astroboy 2003. If it's this easy then posting recordings of Tuesday and Thursday nights will be cake.

Check it out - http://www.thegond.com/gff/animeclub/test/

Now here's my question - do you want it to automatically play when opened or not?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Yeah, I'm gonna agree with that. I've updated that page and drunkgff's page accordingly.

Boo has suggested Planetes and Dokkoida. I might as well tell you my picks - Princess Tutu, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, and Hare+Guu. I will select one of my picks and deliberate on two others that you guys have and will suggest.

Are you guys up for starting this Tuesday night? =o

GFF ANIME CLUB - GAR MOE FUN FARTS YEAH

Click on it check it out! Now with more ponies as requested by Infernal. <3

The Tutu, Ebichu, and Tylor images are meant to be temporary placeholders but if I don't get some good suggestions then I might just make that the line up.

Whats your time zone again Acer. I'm trying to figure out if I could participate from Korea.
(UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)

What's your time zone, Hyde?

I'm all for this! But why DBZ of all things? Is it at least the re-done version that supercompresses it to a semi-tolerable length?

Haven't seen Azumanga or Bebop in AGES. I'd be all over this
Gech, those were just examples of what the line up could be. I'm probably not going to do super long series like DBZ or One Piece. Azumanga Daioh and Cowboy Bebop would be appropriate in length though. Of course there will probably be exceptions.

Planetes would be great. When is this thing going to start? Or what.
I'm gearing up to start tomorrow at 8 PM EST. I will post a couple example time zones in the opening post when I update it with more details.

I HAVE UPDATED THE OPENING POST. I THINK IT'S PRETTY GOOD.

Kaleido Star is awesome and anyone who objects to watching it should just fucking leave.
Kaleido Star is wonderful. I think it would be perfect to take Princess Tutu's slot after that's completed considering same director and character design and such.

GMT: +9 hours

Seoul, SK
I created a time zone list with Seoul included. Thanks! =)

I have installed a new driver for my wireless adapter, so I may be able to participate.
EXCELLENT! =D

I'd be more inclined to participate if the shows being nominated weren't things I've already seen. Its almost as if they stopped making good anime when my interest in it dwindled.

Oh wait...
Well to be honest I haven't been watching a hell of a lot of anime either. I attribute that to not being able to watch it with anyone which is always more fun for me. Perhaps even though you've seen these shows before it'll be enjoyable doing so with GFF and respark the passion you once had. Besides it's not terrible to revisit good shows.

Let's bring this up again, shall we

But I'm pretty gun-ho on giving Bebop another run-through. It's a pretty awesome series.
We'll have to see. As much as I'd like to run everything forever there are 4 episodes for a series shown a week. That means it could take six weeks to get through a show unless you guys want to adjust it to 3 episodes per series and make this thing run for three hours instead. It's your call. I'm okay with staying up until eleven doing this thing. Please let me know whether you'd rather do six or nine episodes a night. Problem with nine episodes is that it makes catch-up a real bitch.

Alright, I hope you guys are pumped for tonight. I think the discussion thus far has given me a good idea of what future shows to run. We'll be going with Princess Tutu, Oruchuban Ebichu, and Irresponsible Captain Tylor. For more information on them please click on the images in the opening post or the stream page.

Should things run smoothly the schedule should be as such:
(adjust according to your timezone listed in the opening post)

08:00 PM - Princess Tutu - 01
08:23 PM - Princess Tutu - 02
08:47 PM - Oruchuban Ebichu - 01-02
09:09 PM - Oruchuban Ebichu - 03-04
09:29 PM - Irresponsible Captain Tylor - 01
09:52 PM - Irresponsible Captain Tylor - 02
10:16 PM - broadcast ends

Total time: 2 hours 16 minutes

It's not that late actually. I'd be willing to go later and do more episodes of each series or even add an extra day if people are willing to stay up and watch that much.

Adding another episode to each show would have the show going until 11 PM. And if you guys wanted an extra day would you prefer Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday? Of course we'd need to consider that nutty has his radio show on Wednesday that I don't really want to conflict schedules with. The other thing is that Tails already has his anime simulwatches and I don't want to make this whole thing overcrowded although granted he isn't streaming and watching as a group can be done at any time with him.

Now as for the broadcast. It went well. The turn out was actually a bit more than I expected. Around nine people for most of it as people (it maintained this even as people joined and left during various parts of the show) stayed up to the end of Ebichu and then people seemed to sky out when Tylor began. Not sure why. Maybe anime'd out or something. But there were 7 people watching by the end of the show which is pretty good. People seemed to have fun discussing the oddness of Princess Tutu, people loved Ebichu, and folks who stuck around for Tylor got to hear Gech, Ani, and myself wax on about it. In any case I certainly had fun. I'd love to know your thoughts on the shows and the format.

Of course I want more people to partake and so for those who couldn't make it, came in late, left early, or just plain missed it I have uploaded the broadcast. You have a week to watch until next Tuesday's show is over and it is uploaded to take the place of this week's Tuesday show.

I've updated the uploaded broadcast pages with new features! You can now seek in a video without having to load the entire god damn broadcast. Also I've added links that will jump right to where new episodes begin.

Thursday night's show had fewer people show up than last time a whole whopping 2 people but when a few people left some new faces came in to replace them keeping at least six people watching almost the entire time. However I'm very grateful people showed up. To be fair though chat was fairly quiet compared to Tuesday.

I'm a bit disappointed in myself. I forgot to change the resolution down to 1280x720 and was running procaster from my default 1920x1200 resolution instead. I'm sorry if the stream seemed choppy at all because of this. I may rebroadcast tomorrow just to get a proper recording done. I'm also working on seeing if I can reencode the flv to make it smaller.

Now I was talking with the folks in the stream and it seems like most won't be available for a Saturday broadcast. The weekends are a great time to do more episodes however people are just busy doing things, having fun, going out, etc. to really count on them. I may do some silly stuff or maybe a movie or something instead if I feel like broadcasting something on the weekend but since it's not in the scheduled format don't expect me to go upload it afterward.

Speaking of uploads...

Haha I only put that there for people who aren't willing to sit through them miss any of the episode by skipping too far ahead.

I've been looking at the schedule and it's well paced to getting through about halfway though Princess Tutu and Irresponsible Captain Tylor by the end of July. However more importantly Ebichu will have finished on July 29.

7-13 tutu 1-2, ebichu 1-4, tylor 1-2
7-15 tutu 3-4, ebichu 5-8, tylor 3-4
7-20 tutu 5-6, ebichu 9-12, tylor 5-6
7-22 tutu 7-8, ebichu 13-16, tylor 7-8
7-27 tutu 9-10, ebichu 17-20, tylor 9-10
7-29 tutu 11-12, ebichu 21-24, tylor 11,12

8-3 tutu 13-14, ?? ??-?? , tylor 13-14
8-5 tutu 15-16, ?? ??-??, tylor 15-16

So yeah what do you propose we replace Ebichu with? It's a good slot to have another comedy or light-hearted show. As awesome as Planetes is I'd rather not have another sci-fi show going on at the same time as Tylor. It could work as Tylor's replacement though once that is done.

The other thing is that I'm looking at the pace for which we could go through these shows. If we continue doing 2 episodes per series a night then we won't be done with Tutu and Tylor until August 24. That means we would be watching a 26 episode series for 13 days over 7 weeks. If we had gone for 3 episodes per series a night from the get go it would take 9 days over 5 weeks to watch a 26 episode series.

Of course if you were to go with 4 episodes per series a night it would be even less but that's getting a bit heavy for a weekday night which brings me to my next thought. Is 3 episodes per series a night too much? Let's just look at the line up. If we average it out to 22 minutes per episode then that would be an hour and 6 minutes per series a night. Three series and that makes the broadcast run 3 hours and 18 minutes starting at 8 PM and ending around 11:20 PM. Would people be willing to do that? Would it be wiser to move the show up earlier to say 7:30 - 10:50 PM or 7:00 - 10:20 PM?

The other thought of mine is that if we were to switch the schedule to 9 episodes a night instead of 6 episodes a night would we want to switch right away or wait until a halfway point. The halfway point going at 2 episodes per series a night is the end of July when Ebichu is currently scheduled to end and the other 2 series also are around their halfway mark. The week after that could start 3 episodes per series.

Your thoughts, guys?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

How do you guys feel about this? Ultimately it means more of the show(s) you like per week. Can you handle that much Ebichu, Deni? =')

lurks, deni, gech, zip, and pack: you guys have been there for this from the get go and I aim to please my watchers in the stream. The point of me adding more episodes per show is that at the going rate it takes a month and a half to do a 26 episode series. If the episode count was raised by either adding 3 more episodes a night or adding a third viewing night then it would take only about a month's time instead.

Problem with adding a third day is when to do it. People are busy on the weekend although people did seem to be around in chat yesterday that probably could have done it. Wednesday would have us infringing on the beginning of nutty's radio show. So hmmm...

Are you okay with it taking a month and a half to watch a show? Admittedly we would be always watching three shows at this pace but is this too slow or not?

Oh and I figured out how to add skins to the archive's player so now it looks like the youtube skin~

As usual, Tails you are wonderful! <3

I propose acer sneaks in catshitone in the next broadcast somewhere, like a preshow or something, if he can do it anyways.
Although it wouldn't really be sneaking in anymore but I'm not opposed to doing something like this. It might make the show run slightly longer but people seemed to be alright when I was a little late last night.

And since I couldn't really convince myself you guys wanted nine episodes a night I'm sticking with six until you guys ask me to change the schedule.

Anyway, broadcast 3 is available in the archives now.

I'm sorry there were technical difficulties tonight. I'm not even sure why or how. I kind of doubt a bunch of people were checking the archive while I was broadcasting and my bandwidth test show I can upload just fine (like 20 up) almost anywhere in the country. Thing is even I started getting choppy results on my laptop. This was during Cat Shit One where it was worst. I restarted my machines when Princess Tutu had similar choppiness and afterward it seemed to be fine for the most part. A few people out west still claimed that it was choppy for them. This kind of confuses me as the way livestream works is that I upload to them and then they broadcast to anyone tuning in. Perhaps livestream just had a rough night and my laptop needed a good restart to display it properly but nooo pretty much everyone said it was choppy to the max. I dunno I'll have to do more research because the recorded broadcast of Cat Shit One isn't choppy at all. I'll have to do more research on this.

Well as far as the regular broadcast went it seemed fine by me for the most part. Actually it's probably the highest number of people we've had so far. We kept up to ten people for the most part up until the end of Ebichu and then numbers started to dwindle down to seven when Tylor began. A little halfway after the first Tylor episode was done there were only three people and soon after that people just dropped out completely leaving me to watch the rest of that and the second Tylor episode alone completely by myself.

Dwindling numbers for Tylor have been pretty consistent but this was pretty bad, guys. I hate to do this considering it is probably one my most favorite animes but unless I know people are watching it via the broadcast archives and/or enjoying it I might have to cancel Tylor or do something drastic like move Tylor up earlier into Ebichu's time-slot. I don't really want to do that as it might anger some who just can't stay up much longer to then watch Ebichu or it may backfire and people will just ignore the broadcast until Ebichu is on and skip out on both Tutu and Tylor entirely. I don't want any of that but I cannot help but say that the reaction to Tylor has been very disappointing since I regard it so highly. If you haven't even caught Tylor yet or miss it due to circumstances please give it a watch in the archives. I only wish to share it with you all but if it isn't what you want then well... please let me know.
And here I thought increasing the number of episodes a night would be a good idea... nobody even stays to the end... kids these days don't know good anime... stay off my lawn... grumblegrumble... bitterbitter...

Anyway, broadcast four is now available in THE ARCHIVES. If you missed Tylor (and you did miss Tylor ) then please use this opportunity to check it out.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I actually did a bit of thinking and if people don't really want to watch Tylor in our current schedule I can do three things.

Solution one:
Tuesdays & Thursdays remove Tylor and instead show 3 episodes of Tutu and 3 episodes of Ebichu
Saturday marathon 6 episodes of Tylor

Solution 2:
Keep current schedule but replace Tylor with another show people want to watch. Maybe still do marathon of Tylor on Saturday

Solution 3:
DRAGON! DRAGON! ROCK THE DRAGON! DRAGON BALL Z!

Well Acer you gotta remember you can't force people to watch stuff if they don't want to.
To clarify: I have the above propositions specifically because I don't want to force people to watch something they don't want to watch to which in the previous post I am asking if Tylor is something they are watching and/or want to watch. I run this show mostly for your entertainment and if you aren't being entertained by something in the show then I'm doing it wrong. That's why I'm making these posts. I want to know how I can make the show better.

If you're not sold on it by 13 I'll be incredibly sad. ;_;
This times a billion. Episode 13 is just incredible.

I guess we could do a poll Acer, give priority to your regular viewers in the voting, so no random asshole chooses a show but never shows up to watch it.
I could do a poll but I'd probably do it in a separate thread and link to it in here. Seems almost like a needless thread though as if I should make it in Testing since most of the discussion is going on in here which is really what matters because I'd like people to actually post their thoughts on the matter. That means more to me than tally marks on a board next to predetermined answers.

How ya doing, buddy?

For you two I'm gonna make a special hell filled with sounds of Dragon Ball GT running simultaneously in Japanese and English and if I can find it Spanish set to video of Dragon Ball inverted, upside-down, and any other number of terrible effects I can get ffdshow video decoder to pump out. For Garr, he will get 20 minutes of powering up episodes with baby laughter.

But for serious I just don't want to be watching shows by myself is all I guess and while I don't want to cut Tylor I'd rather bump it to Saturday and play more Tutu and Ebichu on Tuesday and Thursday if it means people will stick around longer. This is basically me assuming that folks are having trouble handling more than two series in one night and compromising by pushing the third series to Saturday. If people are mostly just watching Tylor using the archives then it's just as well to bump a week's worth to Saturday which people can catch if they want to or view in the archives. How would you guys like that? I mean I know you really dig Tutu and Ebichu so more the merrier, right?

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I will Merlin that shit starting with the final episode of Dragon Ball GT and ending with the first episode of Dragon Ball.

But seriously guys, my proposed schedule ideas - how do you feel about them?

Jam it back in, in the dark.
