Negima?! is based off a manga of the same name which is based off the original Ken Akamatsu manga Mahou Sensei Negima! Negima?! which uses the same characters and originating plot as the original Akamatsu manga but instead focuses more on magic, fights, and zaniness (inherited through its Pani Poni Dash staff) and has a different story with some similarities. Production values are sky high when compared to the anime that was actually based on the original Akamatsu manga. Poor dude can never get a faithful show based on his works. Love Hina, which had great production values also did its own thing like the Negima! anime. However, the Love Hina anime on its own was actually very good. The problem lies with some mediocre filler episodes and the lack of a second season that was instead made into 2 specials and a cliff-hanger OVA. The clincher is when you decide to compare the good anime to its source material. If you hadn't read the manga to Love Hina then you'd just call it a great show that ended poorly. If you had though then you'd see all the potential lost as the show covered perhaps a little more than half of the manga and missed plenty of details and fun stories from it. The anime did however did add a lot of good things, characters, and details that didn't get explored or just didn't exist in the manga. It would be fun if Love Hina was revisited and those elements were combined with a faithful translation of the manga. It would make for one of the best animes ever in my opinion.
I'm very glad that both Negima! and Love Hina were produced. Although they could have been much better a lot of good has come from them. Without Negima! I imagine such a great cast wouldn't have been formed for Negima?! I got deep into anime because of Love Hina. I wouldn't be an anime fan without it. Perhaps later for another show but Love Hina was my gateway drug and I must thank it proper for being so.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
