The only real difference between the two sockets, besides their obvious incompatability with each other, is that AM2 boards use DDR2 memory, and 939 boards use regular DDR. Performance is about the same, but AMD probably won't make any faster Socket 939 processors, so you should go AM2 if you want to be able to upgrade later.

There's no reason to buy Socket 939 hardware unless you can get a good deal on it, or if you have a LOT of DDR memory and can't afford to replace it.

As for your other three questions...Pentium D processors, no one, and 42.
