Having an interest in Astronomy, I can tell you that using flashlights with red filters protects your 'night vision' the best. This is also why the Military uses red filters on flashlights. So it disturbs your eyes (and, therefore, your sleep) the least if you use digital clocks with red digits (especially if you can turn down the brightness to the lowest level needed).
