Gym Battlers Open

Deadline to finish your matches: Monday, June 16th!

So you want to play like a pokemon gym leader. Cool! You've come to the right place! There is one catch though. And that is your type selection, how that will be done is explained below.

Current Sign Up Status: CLOSED
Sign ups are closed!

Tournament format: Round Robin
Since this is a round robin tournament you are required to fight everyone for at least one round. First to three wins/draws ought to do it, that means a minimum of three actual battles per person before switch against a new player. So be sure to log down your victories and losses! And post about it back here.

Points Break Down:
Win = 2 points
Draw = 1 Point (Either when each player's final Pokemon is KO'd in the same turn or when both players are in a deadlock lasting more than 10 mins. For the latter~ it is at both player's discretion to accept the draw. Not a requirement.)
Loss = 0 points

Once all players have done their rounds points will be tallied and the top 4 will battle it out for first place. Mostly to see who is the clear winner. To advance in the top 4, all you have to do is battle the person with more points than you (4th -> 3rd, 2nd -> 1st. Winner of those matches will then battle each other once.)

And one last thing. Any point ties that may effect placing in the top 4 will require a sudden death match (quick 3-on-3 battle.) An extra point will be given to the victor.
RULES:
  • Battles will be done at the lv.100 preset in either 6-on-6 or 3-on-3. In case participants do not have enough time to make a full team that can comply with this tournament.
  • All Pokémon in your team must be the same type you are given! Dual types are fine too.
  • No Legendary Pokémon and Wobbuffet. Gym leaders are too awesome for that.
  • Sleep Clause: At any one time only one pokemon on your opponent's team can be put to sleep by you.
  • Benching is allowed. On top of your team of 6 Pokémon you are allowed 3 alternates. This should help keep battles somewhat less predictable.

How to Enter:
Here's the interesting part. And the only fair method I could think of without going over board. To enter, post in this thread saying you want to play. "Maybe" and "I think" do not count as this next part is crucial to this tournament's success.
Before entering your post to play type a number between 1 and 17, preferably a number that has not been picked. That number will determine the above poster's element type. Once that is done I will then PM the above poster's type and let things go from there. Since this happens to be the opening post I will choose the last poster's number right now. Don't worry I'll use something that will make the decision for me. Like ChocoDecide =D
Last poster will get this number:

I think that's all that needs to be said. Enter! Discuss and don't forget to pick my number poster #2

CURRENT PARTICIPANTS: (as of 12 Jun)
- Sousuke - 0473-4335-9967
- Black Mage - 2406-1602-4421
- DarkMageOzzie - 2406-6070-8973
- Kairyu - 1246-5201-4026
- Crash Landon - 0645-2635-1419
- Generic Badass - 4854-3643-9530
- Identity Crisis (Icy) - 3737-6076-6955
- radcliff13 - 1633-2877-6123
- Chaotic - 1332-5334-3114
- Josiah - 3007-8067-3064

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I just realized a tiny flaw with the type selection. Seeing that you guys don't know what type everyone else is using. And I do since I created the list. Would you be ok if I just reveal the selected types for each person? Do you care?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I'll toss myself in here. I used to do this back in the Red/Blue days. Hopefully I can throw together a decent team.

Going with lucky #13

Also I don't think that matters all that much in the long run. Even if you know the main type, the secondary type could throw you completely off. Or you could have someone not involved redo the list.
Yeah, that's why I'm not worried about knowing what types you guys have to utilize. There's so much variation with types and moves it's almost a moot point.

I'm in!

Let's go with... #9.

I don't care if you know who's what type. I say keep it a secret, maybe only announce what type you are to everyone (then we know your type and you know ours, but no one else knows any other's type).

EDIT: In any case, the sooner we know our types, the better. I need to get to work right away on my team, so could we maybe PM you for our type, Kai? Or have you not assigned types to the numbers yet?
Hmm fair enough. I don't think it'll effect anything in the long run anyway. I'm assigned with Ground types. You Rock, Fire and Poison types are going to get it!
The person below you wanting to play has to choose your number. So whenever he or she posts with that number is when I'll PM you your type.

edit:
also, yeah. The type listing is already complete. Right now I'm waiting on the participants to pick the numbers.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Aw, I wanted #13, heh. Anyway, I'm in! Just one question though. The level-100 setting... does that mean that all Pokemon are automatically adjusted to level 100, or just that they can be up to level 100 [but if they're say, level 70, they stay at 70]? Also, with the benching rule... That means we can essentially have a
team of 9, and just use the six [or three, if that's the case] we choose for that particular battle?

Also, no Legendaries... As there are so many now, could we possibly get a list of which are actually Legendaries? The only games I've owned are Red, FireRed, and Pearl, so I'm not totally up on the list these days.

And I choose you, #7!
Totally missed this post, sorry!

Yes, preset lv.100 means everyone in the battle will be at lv.100 and have lv.100 stats. Even if the pokemon is actually lv.70.
And the legendaries list essentially includes the following:

Articuno
Moltres
Zapdos
Mewtwo
Mew
Raikou
Entei
Suicune
Ho-oh
Lugia
Celebi
Regirock
Regice
Registeel
Latias
Latios
Kyogre
Groudon
Rayquaza
Jirachi
Deoxys
Rotom
Uxie
Mesprit
Azelf
Palkia
Dialga
Heatran
Regigigas
Giratina
Cresselia
Phione
Manaphy
Darkrai
Shaymin
Arcesus

Hmm I knew that fact would be brought up =p.
Ok, I'll let in Rotom (and Phione) since their overall stats are average at best. And their move pool is no better than most other pokemon.

Well you shouldn't look at a Pokemon's dual type as a secondary type. Like Water. It makes things unnecessarily complicated. Take Kabutops as an example. It's a Rock and Water type. It's weaknesses and strengths will be the same even if you said Kabutop's primary type is water instead of rock.
So, yes. You can pick that Pokemon as long as one of the dual type's elements matches your theme.

I'm not sure I'll have time to make a good team in this time frame, but I'm sure I can get something.

So, I'm in and will provide number 16.
Thanks for entering =D

You guys can have as much time as think you need. My weekday deadline is more of a guideline. I'd LIKE for everyone to be ready some time within the up coming work week but if you need more time then I'll give you more time.

So I started playing again [nabbed myself a Cresselia!] and realized that most of my team is going to have to come from the GBA generation, so I popped in FireRed, and the game thinks that I've been screwing with the time on my DS. Now I'm apparently not allowed to transfer for 24 hours.

Augh.
Ouch D:

Well if it'll help speed things up I suppose I can trade you what you need (hopefully it's not too hard to find since I lack a AR.) Your choice though!

Sent you a PM redcliff13 =o

Once that is confirmed I'll add you to the player roster. Also I think I'll close sign ups by the end of today (12am, -10hrs GMT.) Got to give the last player their type already =D

edit:
Also! If anyone has Pokemon Battle Revolution you are more than welcome to use that during the tournament (when possible of course!) Aside from Chaotic, Identity Crisis and myself does anyone else have that game?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Post FYI - round robin info +

Ok, sign ups are now closed and this tournament is ready to go.
Well, almost. Just waiting on radcliff13, if I don't hear from him by the end of today I'll just drop him from the tournament.
Since this is a round robin tournament you are required to fight everyone for at least one round. First to three wins/draws ought to do it, that means a minimum of three actual battles per person before switch against a new player. So be sure to log down your victories and losses! And post about it back here.

Also, Points Break Down:
Win = 2 points
Draw = 1 Point (Either when each player's final Pokemon is KO'd in the same turn or when both players are in a deadlock lasting more than 10 mins. For the latter~ it is at both player's discretion to accept the draw. Not a requirement.)
Loss = 0 points

Any point ties that may effect placing in the top 4 will require a sudden death match (quick 3-on-3 battle.)

Oh, almost forgot!
mystery type listing!:

- Sousuke - #1
- Black Mage - #2
- DarkMageOzzie - #3
- Kairyu - #4
- Crash Landon - #5
- Generic Badass - #7
- Xardion - #9
- Identity Crisis - #13
- radcliff13 - #14 (did not reply)
- Chaotic - #15
- Josiah - #16

So, yeah. Normal.

Bibarel shall pwn you all!!

Just kidding. Though I have been debating at least having him on the bench.
Considering my type I'm actually worried about fighting against those guys ;_;

Nice little list there. This should be fun. I assume then we'll just take the battles on in whatever order we like, then post back here with the results?

Oh, and I guess I should post up my FC, cause I don't think I've done that here before... In any case, I'm 'Loki', located at 0473 4335 9967.
Basically, yes! The only thing I ask from you is that you log down your battle statistics. Like Wins, losses, what the heck happened, interesting notes, etc. Post it here in this thread or in a notepad, or something. Just be sure you are keeping a record so I can add it up later.

As soon as my Wifi adaptor arrives I'll post my FC. Man, I got alot of leveling up to do tommorrow. Weekend was busy...
No problem, just start battling when you're ready. We're in no hurry! But let's not take one month to do this (like last time.)

Josiah, I imagine that Double Team is banned. It usually is because of cheapness. Besides, it's actually really easy to hit Shedinja this generation.
Actually none of those strategies are banned from this tournament. Just the Sleep Clause, Legendaries and Wobbuffet. My only reasoning behind it is that some types will be at a huge disadvantage if they were not allowed to do certain actions. Like Double Teaming.
Though I wouldn't encourage that kind of gameplay for everyone. Just focus on your strengths! Or completely throw your opponents off by doing something out of the ordinary.

Out of curiosity, why exactly is Wobuffet banned?
I like this example:
Spoiler:
"Jida sent out RAYQUAZA!"
"Go! WOBBUFFET!"
"Foe RAYQUAZA used DRAGON BREATH!"
"WOBBUFFET used Mirror Coat!"
"Foe RAYQUAZA fainted!"
"Jida sent out Salamence!"
"Foe SALAMENCE's INTIMIDATE cuts WOBBUFFET's attack!"
"Foe SALAMENCE flew up high!"
"WOBBUFFET used Encore!"
"Foe SALAMENCE got an encore!"
"Foe SALAMENCE used Fly!"
"WOBBUFFET used Counter!"
"Foe SALAMENCE fainted!"
"Jida sent out TYRANITAR!"
"Foe TYRANITAR's SAND STREAM whipped up a SANDSTORM!"
"Foe TYRANITAR used DYNAMIC PUNCH!"
"It's not very effective..."
"WOBBUFFET is now confused!"
"WOBBUFFET is confused!"
"WOBBUFFET used COUNTER!"
"Foe TYRANITAR fainted!"
"Jida sent out METAGROSS!"
"Foe METAGROSS used Meteor Mash!"
"Foe METAGROSS's attack missed!"
"WOBBUFFET used Encore!"
"Foe METAGROSS received an Encore!"
"Foe METAGROSS used Meteor Mash!"
"WOBBUFFET used Counter!"
"Foe METAGROSS fainted!"
"Jida sent out JIRACHI!"
"WOBBUFFET used DESTINY BOND!"
"WOBBUFFET is trying to take its opponent with it!"
"Foe JIRACHI used Doom Desire!"
"WOBBUFFET fainted!"
"WOBBUFFET's DESTINY BOND on Foe JIRACHI made it faint!"
"Player defeated Jida!"

I believe that there is a very, very sneaky way around this, meaning that there's a specific Fighting-type Pokemon who should be able to hit Spiritomb with a Cross Chop, yet not require Foresight.

But I won't reveal it because I want to see if Sousuke can figure it out. Sousuke got the type I was hoping for, one I'm experienced with.
Oh yeah, I remember. I trained _____ for just that reason using TM__ as the appropriate counter to Spiritombs. All I can say is, it works .

It depends how fast we are. If we're quick about it I could hold another one by the second week of June. From what I can tell if no one is held up with anything for two weeks straight, we could be done within a week and a half from now.

Alright, time to ask. How's everyone doing? ANYONE ready yet? I'm close but I'm short on a couple key moves which I should have later today.

Addition: Are we supposed to post our team (and benchers, if we have any) once we have it put together? I do remember it being said somewhere that movesets weren't required to be put up, or is that going to wait until we have the actual tournament?
Team and move pool info are not required. If you're somehow unsure about your selection I won't stop you from asking around. Having a certain element of surprise is partially why this tournament is awesome =D

Additional Spam:
Also, I need FCs from the following players:
DarkMageOzzie
Crash Landon
radcliff13
Josiah

The rest I found at GFwiki. I assume they still work. If not, post back here and say so!

First, I need some information. What brand of wifi usb adapter did you get, exactly? And what OS are you using? WinXP x32 or x64? From what I gather the adapter will not work with 64bit OSes.

A few things you can also try:
- Unplug the adapter, reboot and start the installation over. Do not plug in the adapter until told to do so.
- If you feel it is a firewall issue you can disable it (go to Control Panel > Firewall) and see if your installation completes that way. If you have more than one active, well, you shouldn't running more than one anyway. So turn them off. As that causes all sorts of conflicts.
- No idea if you're using a router but you may need to switch your home network address to something other than 192.168.1.0 (your adapter uses this, apparently.) If you have no idea what I'm talking about just PM me and I'll try to walk you through that.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I did mean first to three wins. Like Chaotic's SSBB tournament. So it is possible to have as many as 5 battles per person. But I get the feeling it won't be like that with a lot of players. Especially me

@Sousuke - *cough* Again, No

It's more lengthy than that. You do have to meet every participant once. You are to battle against each of them at least three times, ie first to three wins (up to five if you're having crazy close matches.) Hence the point system and why you, the player, are required to keep track of your progress. Because that's a lot of info to track by myself.

Things I would specifically like to know:
- Wins
- Losses
- Draws
- Total number of Pokemon you KO'ed
- Total number of Pokemon you lost
- Additional notes (A summary, I suppose. But that isn't required.)

I hope I'm not confusing anyone
If I am, ask!

Kairyu vs Identity Crisis

Oh shit, I did my first round against Icy's dragon gym. And my god it was close, too close. The deciding factor was few HP from one of Icy's pokemon ._.

Report:
I LOST! 3 - 2! But I gave him a huge run for his money.
1. First battle was a 6v6, we traded hits on the first two pokemon but my combination of moves + perfect prediction gave me the advantage. So, I easily won there with 4 pokemon to spare.

2. Second match. It got much closer here. Also add the fact we both agreed to make it a 3v3 to help make things move faster. Not sure how I got the win here but I'm pretty sure I ended up tanking him to death =p. Well I managed to survive with one pokemon, good for me!

3. And this is where my luck ended. I don't want to give anyway too many details about Icy's team but he basically raped my team with the only Dragon-type capable of piercing my defenses. A Kingdra. It wasn't pretty when his overpowered Surf plowed through everything. I lost while Icy had 2 surviving pokemon in this 3v3 battle.

4. Similar situation, but we kept things random by switching up a few pokes. It didn't help me one bit as I completely didn't expect so much power from that one dragon of his. I lost while Icy had 2 pokemon leftover in that 3v3.

5. The tie breaker. I'm surprised he managed to survive my final attack here which could've given me a close victory. But I underestimated his defenses and paid for it in HP. Both down to our last pokemon, I flailed out one final Ice Shard. But his last dragon with full HP just ate like it was shave ice. One flamethrower later it was over. Icy wins again here with 1 surviving pokemon. Very good game though!
Final Count:
Kairyu: Lost 13 Pokemon, defeating 13.
Identity Crisis: Lost 13 Pokemon, defeating 13.
Played one 6v6 and four 3v3 matches.

lawl, at least I tied it up in death count!
