GFF Simulwatchathon The First: Nerds, Immortals and Bears, Oh My!

Well you helped decide what to watch! Now it's time to help... watch it? Everything in this thread schedulewise is tenative because the original poll didn't get enough attention, so I've had it extended and attached here (thanks CHz!). VOTE IN IT GOD DAMN IT.

We've got 3 shows lined up this time:

QI

Quote:
QI (Quite Interesting) is a British comedy panel game television quiz show created and co-produced by John Lloyd, hosted by Stephen Fry, and featuring permanent panellist Alan Davies.

Most of the questions are extremely obscure, making it unlikely that the correct answer will be given. To compensate, points are awarded not only for right answers, but also for interesting ones, regardless of whether they are right or even relate to the original question. Conversely, points are deducted from a panellist who gives, "answers which are not only wrong, but pathetically obvious", typically answers that are generally believed to be true but in fact are not. In addition, bonus points are often awarded or deducted for various challenges or incorrect references to a certain thing or place, varying from show to show.
[06:02] <@CHz> It's only a half an hour show too.
[06:03] <@CHz> It is unbelievable hilarious though.
[06:03] <&Tails> we'll see about that
[06:03] <@CHz> Also Mo0 is in every episode.
[06:03] <&Tails> lol.
[06:03] <@CHz> No really, there is a guy whose sole purpose is to say stupid things and get every question wrong.
[06:04] <&Tails> excellent

Baccano!

Set in 1930's prohibition era America, Baccano! is about the intertwining tales of 3 major events: An alchemists search for the elixir of immortality, a ruckus aboard a high class train between several factions, and a young girls search for her brother. There's much more to it than it seems, but I'll let Funi's wacky promo do the talking:

YouTube Video

Trapeze

Quote:
11 people, each of them suffering from apparently groundless physical symptoms, land at psychiatrist Dr. Ichirō Irabu's consulting room, in the hope of finding there a sympathetic doctor, who listens to their troubles, gives them some pills, and with this, solves their problems once and for all. Instead, they find that Irabu is an eccentric person, with childish features and with little or no sympathy. He employs drastic and unheard-of treatments, and instead of counselling, he prefers to look at his patients' background personally. Despite his strange behavior and methods, he can always help his patients find the real causes behind their symptoms, while being amused at the awkward situations, which the patients get into by following his advice.
One eccentric doctor. Eleven crazy patients. And the nurse? Oh god wait until you see the nurse. Lurk could say more about what impressions you guys will probably get from Trapeze, but I think you all will find it quite enjoyable.

Schedule/Downloads

Well we've decided on three shows, and fortunately the amount of episodes rounds out pretty well for an alternating schedule. This of course, makes for a rather large amount of shit to download (about 10GB!), but thankfully it'll be broken up into long periods for those of you with bandwidth limits. Those of you who don't give a fuck, just download it all.

Interested parties should note Baccano! is going for $21.50 on Amazon (about 1.34 per ep). It is most definitely worth it. QI is a British show so welp (Region 2 DVDs lol) and Trapeze! will likely never be licensed because it's kinda wacky so it's torrents away! That said, a list of what we're doing with torrent links/dates:

QI Season 1* - August 2 - September 9
Baccano! - August 3 - September 24
QI Season 2 - September 13 - October 21
Trapeze - September 28 - October 28 (Alternative torrent)

Anybody with special needs (be it DDL or any other problems) please post now so I can sort it out. I am making this thread early for a reason.

As noted above, the beginning schedule would look something like:

MONDAY: QI Episode 1
TUESDAY: Baccano! Episode 1

THURSDAY: QI Episode 2
FRIDAY: Baccano! Episode 2

and so on for the following weeks. Again, we officially start on Monday, August 2nd starting at 9PM.

*The second and fourth episodes in this torrent are apparently corrupted. Skip them. I'm having Deni upload them to BAF.

Misc.

Episode Count (For Reference)
QI is 12 episodes, two seasons.
Baccano is 13 episodes, 3 OVA episodes.
Trapeze is 11 episodes.

Anime, Codecs, and You
Now, most people shouldn't have trouble getting QI to play. The anime however is a different case. Most people should be able to get Baccano to work on VLC/MPC/Whatever because it's a normal DVD rip. Trapeze is a different case because a)it's HD and b)the subbers are kinda trolls. If it's giving you any problems (broke subs, stuttering framerate) the immediate solution would be to:

A) Install the latest version of the CCCP (or if you're one of those VLC assholes, update to the latest version)
and if problems persist
B) Update CoreAVC* and disable ffdshow

In any case I would suggest you use this weekend to download the first ep of Baccano! and Trapeze and watch a few minutes of both to ensure you can play them properly.

*If you are broke and/or can't buy CoreAVC send me a PM.

Live Watching
Simulwatching for chat purposes will take place in #gfchat at 9PM EST. I was considering making another channel for this but for now it just seems like a better idea to take over that bitch. If you guys want though I'll create a separate channel.

Spoilers!

Oh and one last thing. Spoilers for current episode discussion doesn't need to be tagged after the airing time for the day. Future episodes must be properly spoiler tagged.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Alright folks, tonight's the night! First thing's first. Deni went on ahead and uploaded episodes two and four for us, even though it turns out that it was just 4 that wouldn't play properly. (OOPS)

Airing time for QIS1E01 is 9PM EST, after which you can post your thoughts, comments, call Deni gay for picking this show or whatever up in here. If you want to watch along I'll be in #Simulwatch on the GFF IRC Server (irc.psigenix.net). CHz and I will also be doing a second session at 9PM PST for you west coast fags who probably won't make the first session. I'll see about making it a regular thing if enough people show up. Be there or be gay!

There's nowhere I can't reach.

So am I the only one who read the synopsis for Trapeze and thought it sounded like House: The Anime? Not that that's a bad thing. House is pretty awesome.
It's much, much weirder (in a good way)!

Anyway it's 9PM GET TO IT

triple looooooool at the return of popo.gif god damn it CHz

Alright folks tonight is Baccano! 01. Same time, same place. Can't believe I've had 3 people forget we were doing this. What good is advance notice eh? ;_;

I'm more familiar with Baccano! than QI so I'll give a fair warning. A lot of the first episode is not going to make any fucking sense. In media res doesn't even begin to describe it. It's the beginning, it's the end, it's the middle all in one episode! Remember it well though because as the series progresses you'll understand. All you need to know for now is that Isaac and Miria rule, and Ennis is moe~

Watched the first episode. "What the fuck did I just watch." Laughed. Too many characters. Even the episode blurb was wondering if Vice President is a main character.

"Out of how many?"
Ahahaha, I love that part. Poor Carol, the VP is so mean to her. The titles are awesome, if not slightly spoilerish at times, but they don't really reveal anything too big so it's all good. Like I said, a lot of this episode is what happens after all the main series events take place, it'll all make much more sense next episode.

Also re: earlypostan: NO PROBLEM

Well after a few times you'll get acquainted with everyone's names so it's no biggie. The cast is pretty freaking large.

Also Jacuzzi is an awesome name don't lie Turnip

QI tonight! Dull mentioned the other day that at some point the show starts bringing in Comedians instead of intellectuals, so I guess I should expect a whole lot less right answering going on?

See you in the channel~

Well Philia has my DVDs for starters, which means she's watching it on a TV screen subbed because she requires those~

It's a little easier for us because we're watching on the computer and with the screens overlayed. It's cool with me as long as she posts here because I'd like to know what she thinks of the show.

Also yes, Isaac and Miria rule so hard. Easily the best pair of characters in the show.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

All that aside, hopefully those who missed week one for ~whatever reasons~ will take the opportunity to catch up by Monday. You don't necessarily have to for QI (although episode 2 was pretty great) but it'd be kind of odd to go into Baccano! 03 without having seen the first two.

See you guys on Monday~

How ya doing, buddy?

Man I'm remembering how confusing this series was the first time around. Important things to remember from 5:
  • HOLY SHIT RAIL TRACER
  • Nice is kindof a bomb freak. It's how she got those scars.
  • They keep bringing up how Rachel (girl in the fatigues) got the fuck out of dodge when shit started going south on the train. This is kinda important and they'll get around to her soon enough.
  • Ennis is a homonculus. At least Slizard has good taste/knows how the make 'em.
  • Dallas still missing, though if you pay attention during his name roll in the opening, Dallas' whereabouts and eventual fate are laid out in plain view.
  • Maiza's wound healed right after the knife fight and nobody seemed bothered by it other than Firo. Maiza has a secret~

[21:29] <a_lurker> The Rail Tracer is Jaccuzi's familiar.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

It gets realer in 7. It's a slow episode but there are some faces from the present (including one we haven't seen yet, Huey Laforet, the guy who abstains from voting (and who happens to be the person the black suits on the train are trying to get freed from prison)) on that old ass boat.

[21:31] <Diss> These dudes need like
[21:31] <Diss> Helmets and shit
[21:31] <&Tails> lmao helmets
[21:31] <Diss> NOBODY CAN SUCK OUT MY BRAINZ NOW

Isaac and Miria episode is next!
