Freeware Games Megathread

So my computer sucks. Thankfully, there are plent of cool downloadable or flash freeware games around, some harder to find than others.

So, share your favourites here!

A bunch i like

The Grow Games
Grow, Grow Cube, Grow RPG ~ All of these are pretty fun puzzle-esque games.

Frets On Fire
Freeware PC Guitar Hero. Pretty popular already i guess.

Feed Me
A silly little flash platformer.

Tripline / Noitu Love
Two tiny downloads that are freaking fun. One is a neat puzzle-style game with cool art, the other is a MegaMan style game.

A bunch of free SHMUPs
Some are pretty fun ~

Steam Brigade
A kinda bigger download (~30mb), but a really cool steampunk inspired RTS game.

Also, a couple of places to find some more are

http://www.indiesuperstar.com/
&
http://indygamer.blogspot.com/

Enjoy ~

Does abandonware count? If so, then I remember that I was awed by this collection but forgot about Abandonia Reloaded for months.

Caiman Games also had a bunch of stuff although the good ones are hidden away.

There were two old games that I liked years ago. One was called "Smite Thee" and you had to kill people with lightning bolts, while another one had you constantly building up a fort and using your mouse to literally flick people upwards to kill them so that they didn't invade.

I liked Grow Cube because it looked smooth and I had no idea what I was doing. I did a lot better on my first grow than my second where I had a vague grasp of what was happening.

Most amazing jew boots

http://iworx5.webxtra.net/~lxallian/LXRS/ ~ Liero Xtreme - Like worms sorta, pretty awesome.

http://openarena.ws/ ~ since the quake III engine was made open source, this is a game made using it. Lots of fun and I play it with friends alot. Keeps the feel of Q3. :3

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

There's Subspace, also known by the name of the current client: Continuum.

Like Asteroids. In a big arena. Versus other people. With no asteroids.

Cube and its sister game, Sauerbraten: Open-source Quake-style FPS games with some insanely hard levels (in the case of Cube). Scales very well for computers of varying power levels. Cross-platform Lin/Mac/Win.

Nexuiz: Open-source Unreal Tournament styled "arena" gameplay with some cool weapons, a grapple beam, and blood effects that make one wonder what the developers were really concerned about when they were writing the game. Also scales quite well, and includes some pretty impressive visual effects for those who have high-powered systems. This game looks like sex on a G5 quad 2.5GHz. Also cross-platform Lin/Mac/Win.

Event Horizon: 3D space flight simulator/game akin to Ambrosia Software's "Escape Velocity," which was itself reminiscent of Wing Commander: Privateer. This is a great game for those Mac gamers who are sick of Ambrosia putting in bullshit phone-home crappyright protection in their products and generally making life difficult for those who want to infringe on their copyrights. (Bitter? Me? Naaahhhhhhhhh) I imagine this one would be best played with a joystick, but I've not tried it myself. Requires Mac OS X 10.2 or higher.

Tremulous: Interesting game. It's a strategy/base-defense oriented arena-style FPS with multiple diverse character types. Think Unreal Tournament CTF meets StarCraft. A drawback is that it's online-multiplayer only (no bots/single-player), but I imagine most people aren't as antisocial as I and wouldn't care as much. Cross-platform Lin/Mac/Win.

I'll leave the obligatory mention of SuperTux and TuxRacer to the Linux gurus.

Oh, shit, I just mentioned them.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

It is not my custom to go where I am not invited.

ijji.com has nothing but free games although most of them arn't worth playing, but Gunbound, Gunz, Kwonho and Soldier Front are worth a look depending on your tastes. They also used to have a kinda online version of Gunstar Heroes called Gunster but it was removed because there apparently wasn't enough interest in it -_-

edit: Soldat is the only alternative to gunster I know of if you're curious

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'm partial to www.isketch.net , although some people who are online are total jerks. It's like pictionary, only online.
