But the Birds, Regis and the Dogs are actually not all that strong. It's not like they have a one of a kind move set. Sure they are powerful but if I ban them then why shouldn't I ban pokemon like Metagross, Salamence, Dragonite or Tyranitar?

Manaphy, well I can't say the same since it's basically a Mew that can't learn the same variety of moves. Still with 100 base stats across the board it's not exactly weak either.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

How the fuck did Tyranitar, Salamence, Metagross and Dragonite get into there? Thats b/s since they aren't legendary
Quote:
name: Choice Band
move 1: Crunch
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Earthquake/Focus Punch
move 4: Pursuit/Focus Punch
item: Choice Band

nature: Adamant
evs: 60 HP / 252 Atk / 196 Spd

[SET COMMENTS]

Choice Band Tyranitar is monstrously powerful. Crunch and Stone Edge both benefit from STAB and Tyranitar's massive Attack stat and will be your main methods of attack. Earthquake helps to cover some Steel types such as Magnezone and Lucario and hits Metagross and Jirachi, although Crunch does some heavy damage to the latter two already. Focus Punch hits many of his counters harder than anything else on the set, while Pursuit serves to destroy those who flee from Tyranitar. Pursuit is an incredibly dangerous move on Tyranitar, for his foes anyway. Anything that doesn't enjoy taking a boosted Crunch "can run, but they can't hide". Pursuit hits a fleeing enemy for the same damage as Crunch would and OHKOs almost everything that is weak to it. With many sweepers opting to use Choice items, some good prediction and making use of Tyranitar's useful resistances can get him for a free Pursuit to OHKO, or at least wear down opponents.

See the section below for some examples of the incredible power this set wields.

[Damage Calculations]

Max HP/Defense Suicune takes 45 - 53% from Stone Edge, 36 - 43% from Crunch.

Max HP/Defense Skarmory takes 47 - 56% from Stone Edge.

Max HP/Defense Swampert takes 42 - 50% from Crunch, 53 - 62% from Focus Punch.

Max HP/Defense Bronzong takes 43 - 50% from Crunch, 53 - 62% from Focus Punch.

Not to mention that Tyranitar is already capable of OHKOing many of the largest threats in OU, even if he just sticks to his STAB attacks.

This is why T-tar is banned.

Quote:
name: SpecsMence
move 1: Draco Meteor
move 2: Dragon Pulse
move 3: Flamethrower
move 4: Hydro Pump
item: Choice Specs
ability: Intimidate
nature: Modest
evs: 4hp/252spatk/252spd

[SET COMMENTS]

The Salamence of choice is no longer bound to use physical attacks (yes, that's a pun on Choice Band). Salamence's oft-overlooked 110 Base Special Attack now has the 140 Base Power Draco Meteor to work with. Since only Steel type pokémon resist Dragon Attacks, Flamethrower (for Skarmory, Metagross, etc.) and Hydro Pump (for Heatran, Probopass and Bastiodon) hit 99% of the pokémon in the game with at least a 2HKO. That, in part, is why you see two direct-damage-dealing attacks of the same type and category (in this case, special) on the same pokémon — in practice you should be using Draco Meteor primarily, in the early and middle stages of battle, then Dragon Pulse to sweep up at the end, predicting the above otherwise "trouble pokémon" accordingly.

The more detailed and somewhat more complicated reason touches upon that notion of "trouble pokémon" as far as SpecsMence and Choice-pokémon in general are concerned, and it is one I will elucidate in depth as the concept is still confusing to even experienced battlers. The reason you don't see Hidden Power Grass or Hidden Power Electric, for Swampert and Gyarados respectively, as options is because of one simple rule about Choice-pokémon — they're all about prediction, on the part of both the user and his or her opponent. If you are locked into a particular attack, either the pokémon that switched into you is badly hurt or "you used the wrong attack"; it's as simple as that. Then, for the next turn, you know you're locked into that attack and you opponent probably does as well, depending on how much damage you did to his or her pokémon.

I hope that is clear enough, as, again, the moveset itself isn't exactly as intuitive as it may seem to some people. Hidden Power Ground may prove to be a viable option over Hydro Pump, as it is 4× effective on the three pokémon listed above who shrug off Dragon and Fire attacks and 2HKOs a predicted Empoleon as well. I feel that locking yourself into a Ground attack is very risky in DP though, given how large the threat posed by Flying-type or Levitating pokémon like Gyarados, Azelf and, yes, Salamence is. If you're set on using a Ground attack over Hydro Pump, though, go with HP Ground, as it outdamages Earthquake in every situation that calls for a Ground attack, even against a Calm Empoleon.

this is why Salamence is banned.

And this is for Dragonite
Quote:
name: Outrage
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Outrage
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Earthquake
item: Leftovers / Life Orb / Yache Berry / Lum Berry
nature: Jolly
evs: 58 HP / 252 ATK / 200 SPD

[SET COMMENTS]

There are very few things Dragonite does better than Salamence and Garchomp, but this is a really good example of one - Dragon Dance and the new souped-up Outrage. In the late-game, this Pokemon will out speed everything up to and including Choice Scarf Heracross after a DD, and with an added attack boost on top of 367 attack, Dragonite becomes a deadly late-game force. You can add Life Orb to strengthen the blows, or use Yache Berry to take an Ice Beam, allowing you to set up another Dance, cementing your victory. Lum Berry will cure confusion, allowing Dragonite to go for another round of Outrage without risk. Fire Blast and Earthquake take care of steel types.

Shaymin has 100 across the board too, I believe.

The legendary dogs are so weak, it's not even funny. The only scary one's would be a sleeptalk Suicune folowed by a sleeptalk Raikou. Entei doesn't even have the moveset to get to something like they can.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I think the only reason that pokemon is not allowed is because you have to cheat to get it. Otherwise, it is a rather harmless pokemon when compared to the others.

Pretty much, yeah. But yeah, my edited post above should answer all questions as to why those two dragons and that hideous beast we call a pokemon were banned (by hideous I mean scary).

The move sets and builds are also the standards we see played.

Okay, so then if its a common build, why not make your own build to counter it.

I know how to counter Tyranitar easily

Same here, I could take down a Tyranatar in, if not, at least one hit.

But what I'm figuring is that not everyone's team contains a legendary anyway. So I'm starting to wonder if we're freaking out about nothing.

I've got a very good T-tar counter. It's resistant to just about everything in that standard moveset as well, so I'm not thoroughly frightened off. It happens to be a Pokemon I'd use anyhow, T-tar or not, so it's not even like I'd be including it as a Magic Bullet.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Well then I guess we finally have an agreement. Standard rules set it is~
Yeah we probably are blowing this out of proportion but it's good to talk about it now before the tournament starts. Leaves less room to complain and more room for actual battling.

We still seem rather split on the whole Evasion Clause issue. Not adding it in may causes some long drawn out battles. But if you guys don't care about that then I'll leave it out.

I'm 100% down with this tournament, but all of this banning noise is silly. Just ban all the obvious ubermensch (I'm looking at you, Dialga #3,579.) and leave the poor dragons alone. I don't even have any base 600's on my team, but knowing that I beat somebody who was handicapped by not using their preferred team would just seem lame to me.

Bring on the Salamence, and I'll introduce him to my friend Ice Beam.

I'm kind of neutral on the evasion clause. Double team is annoying and all, but it also allows your opponent to setup spikes or dragon dance or whatever. We also have the benefit of having a community of online personas to go with this tournament, so anybody who uses an entire team full of evasion haxers will have to deal with being known as a no-skill prat.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Lazyguy*
BigCN401*
Generic Badass*
Elmoogle
Kairyu
* = Haven't heard or seen them around this thread for the past few days. Expect a PM from me~

And also a update of the current rules:

Q: Ok so it's round robin, what do we do next?
A: The first thing I need you to do is PM me your team. Hold items need not apply.
I know, you'll have to trust me. I can promise you that my team is ready to go and I will not be making changes. Once all players have sent me a list of their teams I'll make a new "tournament thread" by Friday, you'll see everyone else's team by then along with a the new bracket listing.
Then the next thing you need to do is contact the person you're supposed to challenge. Once you finish your matches for a bracket, you can report to me via PM/IM and tell me the results or post about it in this thread~ afterall we all like war stories.

Rules *updated July 25*:

- 6 on 6 single battle OR 3 on 3 single battle @ lv.100 (it's up to you, if neither of you can't decide flip a coin.)
- Matches will be done in best two out of three. Each win equals a point to your score. A loss is of course zero points.
- In between each battle you may change the order of your team and/or your hold items. Try not to take too long.
- The following pokemon are banned from this tournament:
Mewtwo
Mew
Wobbuffet
Lugia
Ho-Oh
Wynaut
Latias
Latios
Kyogre
Groudon
Rayquaza
Deoxys (all forms)
Dialga
Palkia
Giratina
Darkrai
Arceus
- Sleep Clause: At any one time only one pokemon on your opponent's team can be put to sleep by you.
- Enigma Berry Clause: Do not use that hold item!

I can't believe that I didn't log into GFF yesterday and there's already 3 pages about the tournament! @_@ Not to mention I'm going to be busy for a couple of weeks so it's making it hard to participate too. ;_;

After reading all post and looking at the final rules I'm fine it with. Since the deadline is by Friday, if I don't respond by then it mean I have to drop out (I will try to make it though).

Yeah I got your PM, Kairyu.

I've been furiously training my pokemon, but there's not a chance in hell I'll be done in time for tomorrow. I thought it would've been a few weeks away! It's also been infuriating since my planned Feraligatr can't get Ice Punch and Dragon Dance on it until I get to trading (which isn't available to me right now).

EDIT: Wait a minute. What the hell am I thinking, I couldn't participate even if I wanted to! My wireless has been dead for weeks.

Not tournament related, but my Pokemon have fortunately contracted Pokerus, and the underground has been kind to me with plenty of fossils for those who don't bother with it. Thus, I'm up to spread the fortune for those who don't have it yet.

If anyone would like to spare a shadow ball TM or give me an Unown within a certain letter range, I'd appreciate it, if not, then that's fine too.

If it's more time you need I think I can postpone the tournament date to sunday =o. I seems like everyone isn't ready anyway! But hey, how many of us is actually using true lv.100 pokemon? I trained a little so I got everyone up to lv.70, a couple are at lv.80 or 90.
In the mean time I can help with fixing your wireless problem. Unless the wireless portion of the ds is broken D:

I've got true level 100 Pokemon available. If forced, I could play them instead of the stuff I've been breeding lately. I'm waiting to get Merv's game for a minute to do some evo-trading, and I gotta love another Pokemon up some more before it'll be ready to EV train. That one's gonna be nasty since I got the perfect trifecta of personality, trait and ability, a mean, mean Egg Move, and I know precisely where to train it.

If we hold another tournament in a month, I could probably swing a whole new team.

Likewise, I also have a team of Lv. 100's already made, but I'll need to revise the team that I sent you earlier if were doing a Free Battle system, Kairyu. I still need to level up a couple of members on the current team to Lv. 100, and I doubt I'll be able to do so before the tournament starts.
