Well, I fall out of the Song of the Week loop only to return to an amazing selection of tunes this week. Makes me regret dropping out in the first place, heh. There were a few standout tracks for me, but all the nominations were above average.

3 Points ~ SUDEKI Original Soundtrack - New Brightwater
2 Points ~ Carnage Heart Portable Original Sound Track - Moonwalk (BATTLE BGM5)
1 Point ~ Within a Deep Forest (Game Rip) - Diamond Meditation

Honorable mentions: everything else!

Oh man, the uploaded file for Black Belt's Boss Theme sounds pretty butchered. I was bothered with the poor encoding quality enough that I made my own. This is how it's supposed to sound like! Care to use that instead?
WOW, you don't know how much is missing until you hear this version...guess I ripped the track w/o the white noise, eh? I ripped this track years ago ( I think with Massage?), so that might explain the encoding issues; I'm not sure, cause my ears don't tend to be sensitive to the difference with that respect. Anyways, thanks for picking me up! And if I remember right, there's a sticky dedicated to ripping techniques that I might wanna take a peak at, is there not?

As for the voting for this week, I'm gonna put it together tomorrow. I like the idea of giving each track a comment, and I listened to the selections about 5 days ago. With all the BSC work that's been done in between, they definitely need a few more reinforcing listens. Dayum if this forum don't keep ya busay!
Though so far it's been worth it for discovering Rhythm of Red, if nothing else.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Here's my next nomination:

* Album Title: OZ Original Soundtrack
* Artist: Michiru Yamane
* Track Title: The Wingless Angels ~Requiem~
* Source: http://www.gmronline.com/info.asp?CatNumber=GFCA-3~4
* Disc Number: 2 (of 2)
* Track Number: 7
* Catalogue Number: GFCA-3~4
* Year: 2005

My votes for this week. This was kind of tough and I would have wanted to give more tracks points. I'm surprised "Boss" wasn't nominated in the Best Chiptune Contest (or at least I don't remember it) because it's really good!

(2 points) Black Belt (SMS Game Rip) - Boss

(2 points) Within a Deep Forest (Game Rip) - Diamond Meditation

(2 points) SUDEKI Original Soundtrack - New Brightwater

Lennus was the closest to getting a point but seriously, there are a few other tracks I'd have liked to assign points to.

The Official Emulation Audio sticky is a great place to start for emulating all kinds of different formats (or just grab the all-in-one Chipamp for Winamp). Then it's an easy process of converting the format into WAV/MP3 using your preferred player and lame/out_lame or what have you. For example, this thread over at SMS Power! sums up how to encode VGZ to MP3 nicely. Glad to be of help.

Will voting be closing tonight, or will it be extended a week? I definitely want to distribute points this week.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
Check out my original music at my Soundcloud page!

Latest music rips (updated January 10, 2012):

SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

Unless we get a bunch of votes in the next four hours or so, I'm extending. Even if Drakken votes, we'll only have eleven distributions (counting mine, which I'll make if I have to), which I don't think is particularly acceptable. Hell, back in Week 61 where people were complaining about the wonky results because of low voter turnout, we had thirteen.

Let's see if I can't get in the habit of doing this!

(3 Points) Within a Deep Forest (Game Rip) - Diamond Meditation
(2 Points) Carnage Heart Portable Original Sound Track - Moonwalk (BATTLE BGM5)
(1 Point) Love Escalator Original Soundtrack - Rocket punch

Diamond Meditation made me go look up the game itself, download it, and try it out. Man, is that game awesome. So simple, but the art direction is so compelling, and the difficulty is spot on.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Good, cause I haven't even listened to the tracks yet. Still might. But at least I have another week.

Once the crush of the initial 256 dies down, I'll be on point for future weeks.

Boss is a solid chiptune. It's unfortunate that it had to turn up in a week like this.

Moonwalk was cool, but considering the competition, it wasn't enough to get a point. Also went on for just a tad too long considering its lack of variation.

Rocket punch was decent. Might have gotten a point in another week, but again, this week is really good, yadda yadda yadda.

Chiezuna and Midia - This seems like a quality piece, but I don't think I'm appreciating it as much as I should. I guess I don't find it as interesting as the other material being offered this week.

Charge - Once again, DH's nom is right up my alley. Can't go wrong with his noms, it seems. This one's a bit different from normal in that it's a two-parter. The first half is solid jazz, and the second half is more of a nice jazzy soft rock ballad. It's quite wonderful, actually. The trumpet at 4:04 is the clincher.

New Brightwater - My nom. I have to thank my old partner on "The VG Experience" (a Live365 vgm radio station I used to run) for introducing me to this song. It's a wonderful chill-out piece; it does a good job of setting up an "audio-scape", if you will. You could fault it for being repetitive, but I've found it to not be a huge deal, maybe because it's more of a background song as opposed to an active listening one? Regardless, it's just really nice. I love the main guitar melody, simple and short as it may be.

Diamond Meditation - This is kind of a neat, quirky song. The synth sound and its melody remind me of Jazz Jackrabbit 2's music. Too bad this one's so short.

Chillin' in the Trainer's Hut - Short as it may be, this one's awesome. And by awesome I mean totally ethereal, beautiful, and other such words. This was actually on my potential noms list, though I shied away from it due to its length. Hopefully it gets (er, got) the love it deserves.

2 pts. - New Brightwater
2 pts. - Charge
1 pt. - Chillin' in the Trainer's Hut
1 pt. - Diamond Meditation

Observation: While I still find DH's noms to be very good, it seems GFF's tastes have shifted away from the kinds of songs he nominates. They used to get golds practically every time, and now they don't even place. Odd.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I don't know that it's so much a shift in preferences as it could be a general rise in the quality of nominations we've been getting. This week in particular, everyone submitted a track that had a legitimate chance of placing. In weeks from several months back, "Charge" surely would've done well, perhaps even earning another gold for DH. At this moment, the competition is quite good and the variety is some of the best in a long time.

It's not that DH isn't bringing his "A" game, or that peoples' tastes have shifted dramatically. I think many others have simply stepped up.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

ALright, sneaking this one in before it closes hopefully. Actually, I'll vote first, then review in an edit after just to be safe.

3 pts - Boss
1 pts - Moonwalk
1 pts - Rocket Punch
1 pts - New Brightwater

Also, would a nom from Secret of Evermore be considered too mainstream? The recent Seoule interview made me think of it.

That's a tough call. Those SNES RPGs are among some of the most well-loved, but mostly from a very vocal minority.

I say it could squeak in under the threshold. That game seems to be more popular for its gameplay than the music. I know I can't recall the sound.

Also, surprised by Diamond Meditation's stealth victory. It goes to show that a consistent supply of 1 and 2 point awards can still earn gold over the flashy 3 point recipients.

OH RIGHT: Is anyone going to put the little gold medal symbol next to "To A Distance" for winning the last battle?

There's nowhere I can't reach.
