First up, apologies for lagging again in my SotW duties. Especially since you've got your finals, CHz. I have slightly more time on my hands for the time being so will try to buck-up!

My next nomination (what better time to nominate this?):

* Album Title: The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (PC Game Rip)
* Artist: Eric Heberling
* Track Title: Winter 1
* Source: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/el...rfall/credits; http://www.mirsoft.info/gmb/game_inf...d_ele=MjE2OA==
* Disc Number: NA
* Track Number: NA
* Catalogue Number: NA
* Year: 1996
* Note: This is the second Elder Scrolls game in the series.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?
I think therefore I am... I think.

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
RAWK ON. Awesome track. Seriously, this is the kind of stuff I love, and I'm glad it's a from F-Zero game since it's been a while I liked anything from that series. Going to get the full gamerip ASAP!

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
My nomination ~

-> I was wondering btw, what's the stance considering voter's own nominations?

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
Electro-lounge stuff are not my cup of tea ...

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
What a strange choice ... I mean, I like that one, but there are a bunch I would have chosen from the Ys 4 PC over it.

Royal Blood - Flame
Interesting composition. I was thinking it sounded like something Yoko Kanno could have done when I saw it was from a KOEI game. Not Kanno, though. Definitely going to check the full album as well.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
hehe, this so has Sega written all over it. Quite an enjoyable listen all along. I've always like upbeat medleys. =p

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
hehe, I always liked the Amiga's flute sounds. Really enjoyable listen here too. Another thing to find for download on my list. ;_;

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
Martial stuff generally don't do much to me. The alternative rhythm in the end is nice, though.

3 pts: F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
2 pts: Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
1 pt: Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)

Nomination:

Title: Ayashiki Kagayaki
Game: Xak 2 FM-Towns (Redbook Audio)
Artist: Ryuji Sasai, Tadahiro Nitta

There are no rules. Maximum bias and nomination pimpage is not only permitted but often encouraged.

Many people use the oppurtunity to talk about why they nominated the piece, or to give a detailed breakdown of why they like it.

As far as points go, you're free to give your nom the full 3 points. Some, myself included, also try to stack the deck by awarding 1 point to three other songs, reducing their chances of placing.

Wow. I won't go that far, but definitely won't retain to vote what I think it's worth, then. =)

It's actually a *tad* inaccurate, now that you make me look further into it. Ryuiji Sasai worked on Xak 1 and 2 along with Tadahiro Nitta. However, I only have confirmation for the PC88 versions, and not the ports. The compositions are the same (I tagged the FM-Towns redbook after the Xak 1 and 2 OST), but the arrangers may differ as it's often the case. Plus, there is no way to know who of Nitta or Sasai actually composed that one. I'll edit accordingly.

Obscure stuff he worked on are also Xak Gaiden and Heart of Phantasm III (Mugen no Shinzo 3).

Yet another good week.

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
Quite a good listen, though nothing attention-grabbing for me. The sounds were mostly subdued.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
Sweet melody, somewhat akin to Ys tracks. The frantic pace is a plus. And that Yamaha chip's keyboard sound is music to my ears.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
A relaxed track with some interesting parts, though somewhat on the verge of boring.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
!REVERBERATION! Add to that a very cool array of sounds.

Royal Blood - Flame
An average oriental composition. Nothing bad about it, and it was pleasant.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
What a great track! Fun and engaging throughout, with a number of tempo changes.

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
Just love those Amiga synths and flutes, even though the melody is the sort of cliche you hear in almost all Egyptian-themed levels. Too bad I've never played this far into the game, to experience the rest of its good music. The game kinda sucked.

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
Dull militaristic tune. Least favorable track this week.

- The Point Spread -

2 points: Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
2 points: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
1 point: Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
1 point: Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)

Still very interesting--all the sources I ever see say that Sasai had stopped composing after Tobol No. 1. Do you think you could share any of those, one Sasai fan to another? I always bemoan the fact that he didn't write more.

Those actually are his early works, all around 1988/89. I can send you the Xak stuff, but I don't have Mugen no Shinzo 3. Knurek have it working in Hoot, and I've been thinking of doing a recording of it for a while, but never found the time. Some of it sounds neat, from what I could hear.

What? I LOVE Training Ground! uggg, I don't like people any more. .

Very nice week, I was impressed, though not shaken.

F-Zero-Excellent, fast paced track that embodies the spirit of the game perfectly.

Genocide-A typical RPG fight song. Nothing new.

GunValkyrie-A well done, smooth track that reminds me of Water from Advent Children. Not my cup of tea, but props nonetheless.

YS-Very cool effects, with just the barest of a song to back it up. I wish there was more melody, because the rest is done so well.

Royal Blood-This is my cup of tea. A nice, oddly out of tune but satisfying violin front wins this some points.

Monkey Ball- Not bad, but not good either. Monkey Ball perkiness to the limit.

Superfrog-Typical Egyptian level fluff, though the frog croak is a nice effect.

Timesplitters-My nom, and one of my favorite game songs. Not only does it have a great, full melody, but it's backed up by a moving bass. It's not really milaristic as it is cowboy epic.

3 points-Timesplitters
2 points-Royal Blood
1 point- F-Zero

Now somebody tell me my nom wasn't a complete failure?

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?
It turns out that today is opposite day, so all of what you have said is true, so you should probably just go.

F-Zero Climax: Not bad, but not that amazing either. It seems fairly standard for a racer, by which I mean "aggressive" and "generic". A more distinctive melody with better sound seperation would've been a big plus.

Genocide 2: It's decent, but it somehow lacks any one element that stands out to grab my complete attention. Maybe it's actually too fast; a slower tempo might actually improve this one.

GunValkyrie OST: A rather nice groove. I've been in a trance mood lately, and this track satisfies. I often enjoy pieces that feel "dark" without feeling "angry". This one's cool and detached. I like it.

Perfect Collection Y's IV: It's a mixed bag for me. There are elements that I highly like (the slow, spanish guitar work) and elements that I felt were overcooked (the "plinking" synth that served as an ersatz percussion line throughout). It's good enough for a point, though.

Royal Blood: Sorry, I've listened to the entire album and I know there's better to offer. 'Flame' is okay, but I would've liked to see a different track represent the album in SotW. I've been considering a couple for nomination for quite some time. Perhaps I should call one up soon.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz: Our first Wii nomination! I've always been slightly disappointed with Monkey Ball music, but this one's a step in the right direction. Catchy, perky and some good variations. A potential winner.

Superfrog: Allister Brimble is someone whose body of work I've just begun to explore (expect a Brimble track from me in the very near future). His style is quite apparent in this, although I am rather neutral on the overall nature of the track. But what makes Brimble so interesting is his ability to wildly change the genre of his composition while remaining true to the quirks that comprise his musical signature. I might give this a point solely due to name factor; SotW needs more Allister Brimble.

Timesplitters 2: Graeme Norgate is pretty much the only composer who can make militaristic tracks that don't annoy me. 'Training Ground' is still more oppressive than I prefer, though. But there are some nice subtleties to Norgate's work that I can appreciate.

NUMBERS!!

2 Points: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
2 Points: GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
1 Point: Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
1 Point: Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion

There was some interesting variety this week. No homeruns for me, but several doubles and a triple. Pretty good week, in my opinion.

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
This is actually a pretty decent song that stays active throughout... but for some reason, the sequences just don't seem to make me completely addicted to the song. I guess it's just average good.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
I also really like the synth instrument that makes up the melody, which is also pretty good. I agree with Crash on this song - it's possibly that a slower tempo might make this song even better. Nevertheless, I still thing this is a better track in this pool.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
Unfortunately, the song only really starts to get pretty good at around 1:18. But besides that, it is actually a decent groove.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
Wow... this song is very interesting... and totally different from all of the rest. I think this song might be getting higher marks for me, because of the way the melody is very experimental. It's something quite new for a taste.

Royal Blood - Flame
This really isn't oriental enough for me to stick it in that genre of game music. I think this song is lacking something to make me want to vote for it, except for possibly the end of the track.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
This track is obviously separate from a lot of the rest. It's absolutely addicting, and I'm not sitting around waiting for a soundtrack instead of just a game rip. By the way, how are the other tracks in this game rip?

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
Whoa... this is a really quirky song and it's actually kind of interesting because of its simplicity. But, I don't know. I'm not always completely interested in this track.

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
The beginning of this song for me sounds like the opening to any sort of normal military march. The repetition of the same theme really gets boring by the end of the song, even though there's a switch in rhythm.

Scores:
3pt: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game (8.5)
2pt: Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly (7.5)
1pt: Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion (7)
...
Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4) (6.5)
GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom (6.5)
F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion (6)
Royal Blood - Flame (5.5)
Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground (5)

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion Somewhere, writ large in stone, is an immutable commandment: RACERS SHALT HAVE DULL TECHNO/ROCK MUSIC. So it is written, so it is done. Few are those who dare defy this edict, and Illusion is not among their number.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly Like a racer song only with with substance and synthy melody. Not exactly attention-grabbing, as noted eslewhere, but a solid if undemanding listen.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom A neat, though repetitive, tune. I found some of the instrumental textures interesting, but I kept wishing a melody would appear and marshall them to greater purpose.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion Our second track called "Illusion" this week (surprised no one else has noticed that) is far stronger than the first. The reverb here is used to interesting effect, especially once it's formed into a melody. Definitely not your standard fare, and interesting enough to make me want to overlook weaknesses in execution (the long sections of nothing but reverb'd plinks, for example).

Royal Blood - Flame A mess. Yea, there is writ a second commandment on that great rock of VGM. It doth read: ALL ORIENTAL-STYLE MUSIC SHALT BE GENERIC OR SHALT SUCK. Fewer still are those songs that spurn these two holy writs, and surely "Flame" be guilty of one.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game I guess I was expecting something cutsier from a game with the word "banana" in the title--the "bananas" suggested by this track are of a wholly different type. I like the melody, but there are a lot of parts that don't feature it.

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4) Definitely got the Egyptian part of the whole pyramid equation down, and it's not a bad song once the other instruments kick in, but I was hoping for something a bit more complex.

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground Where militaristic tunes are concerned, the question is always the relationship between the melodic and rhythmic aspects of the track. It's easy for repetitive snares and percussion elements to dominate a track, and that's exactly what happens here. There are some nice flourishes, though.

What better way for _DH_ to return than by adding another statuette to his trophy room? I'm nothing if not envious

The Point Spread
Ys - 2 pts.
Genocide - 2 pts.
GunValkyrie - 2 pts.

Nomination Time! Something that will be better than the "militaristic" stuff you all hate.

Song: Terran Song 3
Album: StarCraft
Artist: Blizzard
Track: 4 (maybe...)
Year: 1998
Source: http://www.fileplanet.com/ (hosted somewhere on there...)
Notes: "Terran Song 2"' won the SotW several months ago, but 3 is much more progressive and ends in a fantastic climax. It's one of Blizzard's best songs, and I really back it up. It's great for listening to as you browse forums...:P

lol @ "Cancelled forever!"

3 points - GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom - Definitely some good chill out music. Very nice groove, like other have said.

2 points - Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4) - The first time I heard this soundtrack, I remember giggling like a little school child at the frog noises. And that's all I remember. But behind those ribbits is a pretty cool song. Most of these types of songs stick firmly to the generic egyptian sounds, but this one only uses them for a bit, then builds off of that into a new tune.

1 point - Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion - This song went back and forth between odd and awesome. A few parts were hurt by that extreme echo, almost sounding dissonant, but there were several parts where the echo worked well and totally kicked ass. This wins a point for all those awesome parts.

WEEK 80 Points

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
Very... UN-spectacular. The overall composition isn't horrid, but it doesn't live up to anything. I don't like the instruments used at all, but thats just my own taste. The overall melody is boring, and the drums... the drums were decent, but overshadowed the rest of the song.

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
Decent, definitely a "cliche'd" song. The theme is about just as enjoyable as most other "Egyptian" themes. Mediocre song, but nothing more.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
Certainly fits in a Super Monkey Ball game. The overall feel and theme is fun, and enjoyable. Some of those melodies hidden in there... Seems like I've heard them before... Meh.

Royal Blood - Flame
Hmmm, for some reason I don't have much to say on this song >.> I can't really pin-point the bad parts of the song. But I can't find any good parts either. It seemed like the composer wanted maybe an "epic" touch, but couldn't find the right combination of notes and instruments, hmmm, dunno.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
Interesting song, the title "Illusion" fits it well. Some parts of it are great, some aren't, fun song to listen too.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
My reason for nominating this one is kind of random. Lets say it was more of an experiment than an actual nomination. At first I didn't like the repetitive nature, and boring atmosphere. But after listening to it a few times throughout last week, it turned out to not be such a bad song. Still annoyingly redundant, but not enough to force me to rush to the next song on my playlist.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
During the song, I was almost forgot it wasn't a Castlevania tune. Anyways, good song, fun melody and rhythm. Wont steal first place though ;-)

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
Instantly recognized as an F-Zero song. No question there. I like the beginning, but later it kind of dulled of fatigue, as most F-Zero songs do.

~POINTS~

Killing bedroom 3 pts.

Enter Secretly 2 pt.

Illusion (Y's) 1 pt.

4th: Staff Credit Game
5th: Illusion (F-Zero)
6th: Flame
7th: Ancient Pyramid
8th: Training Ground

I actually started this week thinking my nom. probably wouldn't get a full 3 points from me, but it turned out it did, heheh...

Jam it back in, in the dark.
