I'll explain quickly: a BCNM is done by trading those beastman seals toa guy in Port Jeuno. Depending on the number traded, he'll give you an orb, which you can trade to a Burning Circle in one of many places to fight Notorius MOnsters (BC NM). For winning the battle you receive items.

ENM are Empty Notorius Monsters. To fight these you need to start teh Chains of Promathia Missions. You can obtain a key item from NPCs for each of the many arenas and fight the NM inside.

Winning an ENM results in items and experience. You can only do a Specific Battlefield's ENM once every 5 days.
Losing an ENM results in NO penalty.

BCNMs can be done as many times as you want, you just need a new orb each time. If you die you lose exp.

KSNM are Kindred Seal Notorius Monstesr. They work the same as BCNM, except you trade kindred seals.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

At level 18 you can do a quest in Selbina or Mhaura to unlock your Subjob. Depending on which quest you do you will have to collect a few items for the NPC. Most people do Selbina's because you usually get two of the items as you level in Valkurm Dunes.

For the Selbina one you just visit the old elvaan, Isacio, and get the quest from him. He will want you to go and fetch a Magicked Skull, a Crab Apron, and a Damselfy Worm. Usually you will find the Crab Apron and Damselfly Worm as you level with others in Valkurm Dunes. The Magicked Skull will be a bit tricky. You dont always get that item as you level because alot of people do not fight Ghouls. You may have to find someone to help you hunt that down.

Subbing mage-jobs while a Melee-based job can be very beneficial for solo-ing... but it is almost always a no-no as far as partying goes. If you want to solo with a mage sub with your warrior, I'd suggest either whm or rdm. Don't sub blk, your magic will be too low to do any decent damage, and since black magic costs more mp, you won't have enough mp to cast much of anything.

As a warrior, in attempt to joni parties, the best subs for a new player would either be Monk or Theif... and generally Monk is preferred as it offers more Vit (defense) and more HP. Both great as people will want you to tank on occasion.

What weapon are you using? If you havn't yet, I'd highly suggest investing in a Great Axe. They are a warriors best weapon. At first your damage will be a bit weak, but once your skil lrises in it, you'll do more damage with A great Axe than any other, and your accuracy will slightly improve as well. In the low levels, with a Great Axe, a warrior can easily one-shot alot of easy preys .

FFXI is one of the most amazing games I have ever played. I played for more than a year, and hit the following acheivements:

Summoner 75
Black Mage 75
Bard 71
Red Mage 66
(All other jobs at least lvl 30 and WHM43, NIN37, THF37)
Unlocked Sky and Sea
Cleared CoP, Zilart and all available ToAU missions
Rank 10 Windurst
Obtained every Avatar - Shiva, Leviathan, Ifrit, Ramuh, Garuda, Titan, Fenrir and Diabolos (and of course the one you get for unlocking SMN, Carbuncle)
Got my Yinyang Robe
Got the first ever Yigit Turban in all of FFXI
Saw a Thief Knife drop for a friend
Killed all 4 CoP Wyrms (Tiamat, Jorgy, Vrtra and Nidhogg)
Got an Empress Hairpin (Its not much but damn rare)
Got my Opo Opo Crown
and many other things besides!

I really did kick ass in that game, made tonnes of friends, and a few enemies, but my little Taru was very strong and did very well. I kinda miss it though ; ;

But anyways, if anyone has anything FFXI related to ask about, im all ears, PM me or post here, and I will try to get a good response for you.

Oh and advice for anyone starting out in the world of FFXI, lvl WHM, then BLM or RDM first. Having WHM at 37 is insanely important as most people use it for a sub at 75 for soloing/exploring to save on oils and powders. Leveling WHM is awfully boring but if ya get it out the way at the start, your all set.

Oh and start a craft as early as possible. I got cooking to 33 and Woodworking to 61, but gave up on both, cause I discovered the secret to gettin Megalobugard to drop 100% of the time ^^

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

It's meant to be played with a controller, but I got used to dual-arrowkey setup, using purely keyboard to control the game. The number pad is really handy for controlling your character if you're keyboarding it up. Everything's there: menu on -, target on 0, enter on Enter (lawl), resting, etc.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

That's the compact mode and it is not as quite alike to WoW's setup. You have to use WASD and IJKL. One is for Camera and one is for Movement. It's much better to use the fullsize mode.

And in my opinion, the controls are far better than WoW's. No mouse needed, all keyboard and your right thumb eventually becomes the DJ for your camera views. That's if you're using Full Size mode.

First of all, note that I'm totally new to this and haven't got the slightest clue what it's all about - besides it being a Final Fantasy MMORPG.

I just picked up the game (including Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia expansions). Apparently, it comes with a 30 day free subscription and a bunch of registration codes for PlayOnline, Tetra Master, the game itself and the expansions.

Seeing how I will probably never use a credit card to pay for fees, I need to find alternative ways to subscribe to the game if I happen to like the experience.

So obviously, I've got a few questions on my mind:

1. Is there anything basic I absolutely need to take care of prior to installing, setting up my account, etc.?

2. Which server should I choose?

3. Can I use the registration codes from another box to extend my own subscription without having to pay via credit card?

4. What are the expansions for and what do they contain? Are they required for me to install right away or are they optional?

Obviously, the most important question is the payment. For various reasons, I can't use a credit card for this, so I thought of just buying another set along with the registration codes to extend my subscription. It would be nice to know how the registration process works exactly and wether player characters are bound to registration codes or not.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Do you have some sort of debit or ATM card? You need some kind of account info that you can input online.

I would suggest choosing garuda but that's just me There's a site I'm part of (in my sig) and everyone is very welcoming and helpful.

I'm not sure how you would get registration codes from another box... you'd have to buy another game. You'd buy another game for $50 instead of getting a debit card? Once you create an account under 30 free days, if you get another one, you need to start all over because it's an individual account, not just a 30 free day trial.

The expansion contain things like advance jobs etc. If you want to play FFXI, then you should at least install the first two. The newest one which wasn't included, Treasures of Aht Urghan, you can't really do much unless you're level 50 and above so that one can wait. Although Zilart you definitely need if you want any sort of advance job and Chains of Promathia gives you access to new items and new areas. You can always install later if you're impatient. But it does take awhile to install everything.

You can try checking www.ffxi-garuda.com if you have more questions, the people there are probably a lot more helpful than I could be

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Can someone please tell me how big the first update of FFXI is? My computer is currently downloading 7376 files for FFXI...I seriously can't go over my bandwidth limit this month. So how big is it in gigabytes..? (or even better, megabytes, if it's small enough xD)

How ya doing, buddy?

ok first you MUST have a credit card or a game time card to be able to get your free 30days... they will just not charge you for one month and if you don't want to continue playing just cancel your content ID and you will not be bill but you still need a credit for the registration process

2- you "can't" choose your server, when you create your character you end up on a server, they do this to prevent a server to have too much people on it, so those server (the one that have a lot of people on it) you have a very little chance to end up on it. The only way to "choose" your server is if you have a friend that is on a specific sever and he buy you a World Pass that you will imput on your character creation process and you will be able to got on that specific server.

3- no you can't because the registration code register to you playonline ID, so only one registration code is authorized, you can sill do this by creating a new playonline account but you will have to start a new character from 0 ...

4- just install all, this can even save you some time for the big update and some area in the game can only be acess with some expension.

finaly you can't play this game if you don't have a credit card OR a game time card BUT final fantasy XI time card doesn't exist anymore or are really hard to find, so I guess before opening the box I suggess you to go exchange it, this game will be totally useless because even withou a credit card you can't even get the free 30days and like it said, it's just a 30days free, not really a trial...

so the only choice for are:

-get a crdit card and pay the 12.95$ to play this game(there's an additional fee of 1$ for every additional character you make. ex: you have 1character: it's only 12.95$, you have 2: it's 13.95$, you have 4: it's 16.95$ etc...)

-return the game and forget most MMORPG >.>

it's big, but i can,t really say a number, I have all the expension and my playonline folder go over 7.5gb and there's probably 5-6gb that come from the disk so in all probably at least a gb (this is just my guess I may be totally off with those number XD maybe someone else have the exact number)

just a little exemple, I'm on cable and the big update take like 2h, so I'm pretty sure it's at least 1gb if it's not 2gb with all the expension...

Returned to this game, this time with 360. Quitted about a year ago, I was arrogant/stupid enough to try soloing my way through the game, got eventually frustrated and quit. But this time it's different, I'm gonna try to make friends in there. I reside in Unicorn, my character is hume RDM named Miklotov. So if someone is in there too, give me a shout, I'd love too see GFF people in there.

unless you play bst, it's really hard to solo well. you can duo/trio, but soloing is pretty much a bst thing. Summoners can do it as well, but they need to fight stuff that self-destructs.

No.

However, you do NOT need a credit card. The other option is to go to a bank, and buy a prepaid credit card. You load money onto it like a gift card, but it works anywhere a credit card does, including on FFXI.

Technically, they are optional. Zilart is pretty much required due to some of its areas considered as the "only" place to level at that time. Each expansion adds new areas, quests, enemies, items, and missions. Zilart and Aht Urgahn also added 3 new jobs each. It appears, that late game, Aht Urgahn is quickly becoming required as well.

Well, I joined my first Valkurm Dunes party yesterday... and it didn't suck! It also wasn't together very long, maybe an hour and a half, but we got stuff done and I enjoyed it (although if the SMN hadn't been helping out with the healing I probably would have had some issues). I'm happy I didn't embarrass myself, since I was the only subless newbie in the group.

The unfortunate side of this is that I know it can only get worse from here.

Ugh...I'm really stuck. I'm such a n00b at MMORPGs. Well I'm in Bastok and I just completed my first mission (where you need to deliver something to someone in the Zeruhn Mines). Now I'm on my second; I won't go explaining it in-depth because hopefully you all know what I'm talking about when I say the mission where Cid gives you a blue...acidic something-or-other. Where exactly do I need to go in this mission?

A link to a decent FAQ would be great, as well, I can't seem to find any good ones at GameFAQS.

I was clueless on this one too... wish I could remember where I found how to do it.

You're heading into the Dangruf Wadi, which is off the western end of South Gustaberg (just keep walking past the swampy area and you'll zone). Once you're in there, you'll come across these jets of water that will push you up onto ledges - one of them will turn your acidity tester red, and then you'll be done. The tricky part is that it's a specific jet that triggers it, you don't have a map for the area, and it's not the safest place in the world (hi Goblins, how are you today).

Basically, when you get there, just stick to the right wall. Keep making right turns until you come to a clearing; there'll be a jet in that clearing, and that's where you want to stand. After it shoots you up, check your key items, and your acidity tester will have changed. Then you just go back to Cid and you're set.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
