But sites such as
www.ircspy.com and
www.packetnews.com do let you do a pretty comprehensive XDCC search, provided the channel is registered on those respective sites I think, and its simply a click and paste job to download your file. Although I'm not entirely sure on the amount of channels they actually search.
Makes using IRC all the more hassle free though.
In my opinion I'd go:
1) Bit torrent.
2) DC++.
3) Limewire.
4) Emule.
5) IRC.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
