To turn up MP3s without having to re-encode them, mp3gain is a good choice. Just check out the manual, write here or PM me if you need assistance.
As for movies ... well, if it has MP3 audio, you could try it with the program I suggested (demux, apply gain, re-mux) but it could also be AC3 audio with 5.1 channels. Then you should try configuring your media player to properly allocate those channels to your speakers. Jam it back in, in the dark. |

Yes, as I suspected, it's AC3, means surround sound. Check out VLC. It has software amplification out of the box and if that isn't enough you can still mess with its speaker settings.
