I wouldn't say they butchered anything, since they're still using original character art. It's obviously inferior to the Japanese cover, but I'd still say that's still a pretty good cover, especially when comparing to most JPN-US transformations. Or worse, most US-Europe ones.
I love how they're using the Mana tree from the Seiken Densetsu 2 poster/cover there in the background
