The Navy doesn't really care for anything outside of a well trimmed mustache. Since I don't really care for the way it looks on me, I am well shaven most of the time. I generally don't let it grow out more than a day or two.
My only problem with letting it grow out is that I have techno colored facial hair ranging from almost colorless blond hair to red that is so dark it almost looks like black. So only the dark red stuff on my chin can you actually see if I haven’t shaved. The rest of it is too light. Besides it looks funny when the hair under my bottom lip is a completely different color than the rest of my chin. Jam it back in, in the dark.  "In a somewhat related statement.
