Question to Comcast users!

I was wondering what the differents between initial and ongoing monthly price is.
How much would a 4mb connection cost me aproximately (I live in LA)? Like 30$? Is there a minimum contract before I can cancel it?

Initial is the promotional price, around here right now it's 19.99 for the first 6 months, then it goes up to the normal monthly price which is ~50.

Don't know if there's a minimum contract, perhaps you should read the fine print.

EDIT: And you know, you can go on Comcast's website and check prices...which would be more accurate to your area.

Well, 6MB is the standard that's going for 20-25 bucks for the first 6 months, 45.95 a month afterwards. I'm on an 8MB connection right now for the extra 10 bucks, 55.95 a month.

At least around here, the connections can also burst up to 12mb / 16mb respectively. You also get a discount if you're a cable subscriber (again, at least around here), any package. I'm not sure if it's still true, but when I checked, it was cheaper to buy basic cable and broadband, than broadband alone. Regardless, expect to pay at least mid-40s monthly.

Comcast has actually followed through with their rated speeds next to religiously, here in Western Massachusetts.

I clicked that Verizon link, it certainly looks compelling, especially those uplink speeds which Comcast can't touch. But they only offer lower-speed DSL in my area.

If you go for Comcast, go to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy a self install kit and cable modem with activation. I got $20 a month for six months and got a mail in rebate for the self install kit and cable modem (plus a $100 gift card). Anyone who can hook up a TV or network two PCs will find self-installation easy and very cheap.

Me and some friends have verizon and although their service is good enough it has pleanty of flaws.
The modem can get disconnected from time to time especially with bad weather (what is this sattelite) and the advertised speeds isn't what your going to get. I have the same package as my friend and we should be able to up 2mbps. I up at 90kbs at the max and my friend ups at 45kbs on a good day. Theres also the modem which u need to configure to get higher speeds with certain program like bittorrent, you'll have to open ports. The modem also gives me a big hastle in trying to open up my own ftp server, which I gave up in.
So I guess its as they say, it depends where you live and how far you are from a verizon station that determines your speed.

I stick with verizon becuase its cheap, and it still gets the job done either way. I just hate the disconnections.

I am actually a sales rep for Comcast and i fulfill orders online for services, including the promotions....so I have a lot dirt on the company.

The 6 meg speed is the standard speed now and 4 meg is hardly used anymore (depends on the market region) one of the best promotions I have seen on our database is the first 6 months for 19.99 a month with a free self install kit, but the kit will only work if you have cable TV, so if you plan to order one, make sure you have a active cable TV account first to avoid problems with the agent.

the price afterwards is 42.95 with 3.00 extra if you plan to lease the modem. the 8meg service is 10 bucks extra but there are promotions that allow you to get it for cheaper is you are a existing customer who wishes to upgrade.

I myself would like to upgrade to the 8 meg plan, though, think for the $42 I pay now, that's the speed I should already be getting...

Regardless, I'll probably upgrade when the prices come down. In the meantime, I can wait!

Thanks for your sugestions. I'm probably getting 6mb (whithout the tv cable). That should be more than enough for a begining cause right now I have to share a less than 1MB DSL connection from SBC (which suxx major ass!!!) with my roommate but after I finaly moved I have my own broadband.
