What do you do with your old music?

Well, for a little preface, I was watching MTV or VH1 one day and some some music videos for a band called Hoobastank titled "The Reason" and "Same Direction." The two videos I saw were connected (as far as the music video story and plot went which dealt with stealing some precious gem). I liked the music videos and the songs and decided to download them to listen to.

Anyway, just recently after my hard drive failed and I lost a lot of my music, I decided to download the music video for "Same Direction" just to watch it and listen to the song, which I thought was pretty good. After a while, I decided, well, I like a couple of the band's song, why not just download the whole album (entitled "The Reason"), so I did. And it turns out that I like almost every song, except one, on there.

So, I've played the songs on my Winamp playlist, but it seems that whenever my Winamp plays some of the older songs I have, I feel myself wanting to skip over them and selecting a song from the album I just downloaded instead. I've actually gotten quite sick of some of the older songs on my playlist and and now contemplating whether I want to just archive them or just flat out delete them, because they are starting to get on my nerves.

Therein is the discussion, what do you do with your old music? Are the majority of your CDs or records collecting dust on a shelf or in a bin somewhere? Maybe you traded them in for newer music? Are there any "classic" or "timeless" songs that you listen to over and over and it never gets old to you, even though it may not be "hip" or "cool" now?

I also wonder about this whole "flavor of the month" thing going on as well, since I did like some of the older songs on my playlist, I mean, that's why I downloaded them in the first place, but why am I getting sick of them? Is it that my interests in music have changed, or is it because the older music is just so stagnant and I want to hear something fresh, or just going through a different phase of life? Hmm...

Jam it back in, in the dark.

If you listen to a song a ton of times, of course you will grow weary of it. I have a ton of CDs and many of the oldest ones I have, I do not listen to very often at all. Back ten years ago, Bush's Sixteen Stone and Silverchair's Frogstomp spent so much time in my cd player, and I loved both albums to death. But I can't even remember the last time I listened to either of them. It isn't that I don't still like them, it is just that I have listened to them a thousand times, so there aren't really any suprises left, and I feel like I could enjoy something that I don't know quite as well instead.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Including vinyl, CDs, and mp3s, I have some 35000 songs lying around. So, of course some get more play than others, but most everything usually gets listened to at some point. For me, it's more about being able to have a selection of things to choose to listen to at any given time than listening to it all frequently. Some albums I barely ever play, but I still enjoy them when I play them.

That being said, I have sold a fair amount of CDs to used shops. Usually it's just selling a best-of compilation as I acquire the back catalog of an artist.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Unless an album is really bad, I tend to keep music in my collection. Reason being, I usually end up getting burnt out of a certain musical genre or artist and move on to something else, however within a few months (or sometimes years) I revisit it with a fresh perspective and enjoy them about as much as I had before.

Aside from a few of my other musical choices (nu-metal/rap phase) I haven't gotten rid of my old music. In fact I still regularly go back to it. It's good stuff and it's timeless. Though sometimes I just feel like listening to one band or I get tired of a band and stop listening to them for awhile, never really comtenplated getting rid of my old music.

I archive everything on my iPod and then backup onto my HD. Just because I might feel like listening to a particular song three years from now. It'd be a shame if I then regretted having deleted it...

I keep my old music. I have 332 CDs (I counted them the other day), and though I'd say about 50 of them are crap, I keep them for archiving purposes, plus they all have at least one song I kinda like. Sometimes I even buy crap CDs intentionally if they're cheap enough. For example, Hastings had a used copy of Sugar Ray - 14:51 for 50 cents, "Someday" is a good song, so I bought it and instantly put it on my crap shelf. I just wanted it on my iPod for "Someday" and "Falls Apart".

I started really listening to music when I discovered Napster. Obviously songs that I've tucked away in a "Burnt" folder on my harddrive are glossed over, and songs that I've listened to religiously years ago are now collecting figurative dust. But I don't mind growing my music selection and listening to artists I've never considered before, right now some 70's and 80's artists. Sometimes it's good to trudge through those folders and listen to a song or two again. You know you've been listening to too much music when an album or songs remind you of the time you first discovered them.

I keep all my cd's no matter how much I start to dislike a band. There is always a time I will think "I used to listen to this" and I will stick it in and it will usually bring a bunch of memories back from that time period and it just becomes a little bit more enjoyable.

I also keep all my music because sadly I love going back to listen to stuff that I listened to years ago, I love keeping a collection of music. If I were to get rid of a certain cd, I would probably end up kicking myself and find myself wanting to listen to that cd and not being able to get a hold of it.

I tend to keep my cd's. All apart from the ones that I no longer like, when that time comes I pass them onto my sister, she'll listen to anything.
