Prey

http://www.prey.com/

Quote:
Prey tells the story of Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic stuck on a reservation going nowhere. Abducted along with his people to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth, he sets out to save himself and his girlfriend and eventually his planet.

In Prey, players enter a living spaceship which enslaves alien races and devours humans for lunch. A unique twist on the first person shooter genre, Prey features such innovations as the ability to walk on walls, manipulate gravity and perform a "spirit walk" by leaving your physical body behind. Designed by Human Head and brought to Xbox 360 by Venom Games (under the direction of 3D Realms), Prey features full online support for up to eight players, utilizing the game's play innovations for unique multiplayer experiences.
PC Demo.

I just played this game and... wow... it rocks. The game really fucks with your head by using portals and playing around with gravity. The spirit aspect is a nice feature too.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

the single player really look fun, well for me at least and I so much enjoy the multi-player! it,s so fun to run around and enter a room and have to look around you, on wall around you and on the ceiling to search if there's not someone there XD and oh joy when there's like 3-4 players in that room and bullet are flying from everywhere XD

it still impress me that it's made with the doom3 engine but I wonder how it would have be with the Source engine, with the physic thing...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Ugh, all that gravity and walls changing gave me a headache. I hope this isn't permanent. Pretty neat demo, though. It's cool seeing people getting maimed/tortured/killed.

I keep pressing E instead of 'use' whenever I have to press a touchscreen, which is annoying as heck. Am I the only one that does this?

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

Played this one a few days ago. In addition to being a really nice demo (almost an hour long singleplayer, and includes multiplayer), the game itself is pretty interesting. I like the feel to it, kinda similar to War of the Worlds, and the presentation is fairly nice...although it's a little strange that your character doesn't have a body when you look down.

Some of those portal things just blow my mind...in one part you see a model of an asteroid in a case, probably about the size of a basketball. You step through a portal a little ways away, and you end up ON the asteroid, and looking out you see an alien soldier standing right where you were, except from your viewpoint he looks gigantic (since you've pretty much been shrunk down to a centimeter tall). And as you move around on it, the gravity pulls you toward the center, so it feels like the whole world is rotating around you. The gravity system that has you walking on walls and ceilings is pretty freaky too. Strange stuff, it's the only FPS game that's come close to giving me motion sickness.

Overall, it was fun, although I do wish they didn't fall back to the generic "teleporting enemies that come at you one or two at a time" mechanic that Doom 3 used. I really would've liked it if the enemies were tougher and more sparce instead of lots of dinky ones. I mean these aliens came to Earth in a huge ship, surely they can come up with beter body armor?

Well, Doom 3 has it's own physics engine (albiet not as complex as Source's), but I don't think the Source engine could've been easily modified to support multi-gravity or portals. Not to mention the shadowing system really adds to the setting...

Yeah, I still do that occasionally even after playing Doom 3 (which did it the same way). It does make sense to do it like that, but it's hard to shake 8 years of having a dedicated use key for that purpose.

Since it's okay to split threads now, I'll just spam this one.

Game is out for PC, soundtrack is out, downloading the game now. I'll cry tears of joy. Soundtrack rocks, at least. 'Pushing Towards Fate' is a great track.

I played the demo and really enjoyed it. That past on the tiny asteroid or planet or whatever was cool, and hearing "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" sent chills down my spine as I love that song.

I'm downloading it as I doubt I will have the cash for this when it's released over here next week but I without a doubt plan to buy it soon after.

How in the hell do you download these games so fast Grawl?!

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Cable internet?

I think I'm at the end of the game, btw =p

edit: found the last gun, played for a total of 4.5 hours - I heard the game is pretty short, with people reporting a playtime of only 5 hours (and to be bashed by other people for not telling the truth), so who knows.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

So after waiting a day, the download finally finished and I installed the game.

I haven’t really been this disappointed with a game for quiet sometime I’m sorry to say, but I don’t understand how the hell this took so long to come out.

First off, if you played the demo you know what the whole game is like. More enemies are thrown at you later, and you get more weapons, but if you've been following this game, since it's been announced(when was that? Like 10 years ago?) then you've seen everything. I won't spoil it for those who haven't though.

Secondly I beat this game on my first play-through in five hours. FIVE HOURS. I don’t know, maybe I’m really good at video games, but you guys tell me if it’s that short for everyone else.

The game is very easy and this is because of that whole spirit resurrection thing, you basically just kill some stupid flying bird things and you come back to life. At first this seems cool, but it will become annoying over time.

The gunfights pretty much stay the same as you will be fighting those same enemies you encountered in the demo. You will eventual get into a flying type vehicle, which is simple average, it’s not great, but it doesn’t suck. The puzzles are all easy and nearly every single one relies on you going into your spirit form, and pressing a button that your human body can’t get too, and then continue. There are a few occasions where you will have to do something different, and they do get more difficult but it still feels very repetitive.

I thought the story was pretty good, it kept me engaged throughout the whole game, and it gets really good near the end. The ending is gay by the way, just going to tell you right now. And you should watch through the credits, they have an addition cut-scene that plays, I won’t tell you what it is, but it will probably piss you off.

I probably sound really negative in my little mini-review and it should be noted that the game isn’t awful. It’s a good all around game, but the thing that sucks is you can clearly see the lost potential that Prey had. It has a good story that does conclude, and the game play is fun, and the last hour is really good.

So in all I would give it about 8.5 out of 10.
I had fun, but wasn't nearly as good as I was hoping.

EDIT: lol didn't see your post, yeah it really is like 5 hours. Total time spent was about 5 hours and 20 minutes. So I would guess you have about one more hour.

Have you fought the Keeper yet?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

The demo is just the tip of the iceberg. There are some really good puzzles in there involving gravity (the Complex has a few) that aren't show before. Sure, it's not mindblowing, but what shooter is nowadays?

Shooters are always on the short side. Luckily there's multiplayer, which rocks.

'stupid flying bird things' are called spirits. Also, I'm pretty sure you can disable this if you think it's too easy. I kind of like it. It saves me from loading after loading when I die, plus I don't need to quicksave anymore.

Perhaps a higher variety of enemies would make the game more appealing yes. Fighting Hunters does get boring. However, some puzzles are pretty good and got me stuck for a few minutes.

Didn't see it, but that's probably called a cliffhanger.

No, last thing that happened...

Spoiler:
Jen got taken away and now Tommy is going after her. Just finished 'the Complex' level and just started 'Ascent'. How far is that off from the ending?

I think you have about 1 hour left, maybe 2.

The real problem with the whole come back to life system, is that it makes fights which would normally be very intense, and require thinking, and makes them extremely easy. You’re pretty much invincible. I personally think that it would be better if you had some sort of life system, and when you run out of lives, you get a game over. Near the end, there are some fights that are actually a lot of fun, but the whole system just takes away the intensity.

And no, 5 hours even for a FPS is very short.

And the puzzles do take some time, but they just all feel the same.

It doesn't have a cliffhanger ending, it's just what happens. You'll see pretty soon..

As for multiplayer....well....yeah......the multiplayer in the demo had some neat concepts, and I think it would be awesome if there was a map where you could teleport inside a tiny planet in a box like they did in the SP. Where you could fight in there and see people fight on the outside, it would be really cool. I haven't looked at all the maps yet, so who knows.

And just because other shooters haven't been that great, doesn't give this one a excuse. There hasn't been a lot of originally and prey finally looked like it would offer something completely new, it just sucks that it offers something completely new, yet still feels repetitive.

btw how do you do that spoiler thing?

Oh and the music rocks, I want to get the soundtrack lol.

I'm disappointed with this game. Seriously, it brings nothing new to the table. The wall walking and spirit business are interesting, but poorly implemented and get repetitive soon. Most of the puzzles are also totally uninspired and the fighting is, well ... it's been done and done and done.

I was hoping that Prey would surprise me, but it turned out to be yet another generic script-shooter. Sorry, but a few nice ideas here and there just don't cut it.

Well you might be true, but I think some battles are too hard without this system. You can take a lot of damage from a single shot.

Quote:

Yes, it's short, but it's about the quality too. The story of the game is really intense (so far), making the game play pretty nice. Sure, it may not be really creative, but those hours you play at least are fun.

Quote:

Well, yea, revolving around gravity, but with a game that's all based on it I don't think that's strange.

Just finished Prey. The last 2 hours of gameplay where certainly the best, since...

Spoiler:
Mother actually does some funky stuff. The whole Keeper-thing was cool though.

I'm dissapointed by the last fight though, I didn't die once. Bit of a shame but great game, great story, great ending. I'm pleased and will be waiting for Prey 2.

I played the demo weekend on my laptop, but this thing's rather old and only has the minimum system requirements so the graphics are a bit on the lackluster side. I wanted to get a better perspective on the graphics, so I shot out to my friend's house yesterday and used his computer to play the demo.

The game does impress me a bit, but I still feel a bit underwhelmed by the whole experience so far. I like the gravity related puzzles and the portals, but other than that, this game really doesn't seem to offer much besides orgasmic eye-candy. As I understand this game uses the Doom 3 engine so this is only a given and once you see this game running on a Pentium D 3.6 ghz and a Radeon X1600, there's really few games that compete with this on a graphical scale.

I may or may not get this game now that it's out for PC but to those who are looking for a revolutionary game (and if you're one to believe the hype, you would be expecting one) look elsewhere.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
