RPGs on The DS
Hey all.
Are there any RPGs on the DS that are actually worth buying? I've been in the mood for a new portable RPG (car rides etc.), but I've yet to find one that's any good. This excludes the new Mario and Luigi. I did beat that already. Any ideas? Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() ![]() SIG POLICE SAY: Technically only two images allowed in a sig at once, unless special clemency is granted. So seek out special clemency if you try it again. kthxbye. PS what you've got is still pretty annoying

If you don't already have Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, you must get it. It's fun, hilarious, and long enough to keep you occupied for awhile.
There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
ah yes. I do have that one. beat it. forgot to mention that. I'll edit post one.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() ![]() SIG POLICE SAY: Technically only two images allowed in a sig at once, unless special clemency is granted. So seek out special clemency if you try it again. kthxbye. PS what you've got is still pretty annoying |
Aside from Mario and Luigi: PiT, there haven't been many yet. But there's a helluva lot on the way that should be out soon to look into, including (but not limited to):
-FF3 DS -Children of Mana -ASH -Wizardry -Baten Kaitos DS -Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon (not a traditional Pokemon game, but a turn-based-strategy RPG) -Pokemon Diamond and Pearl -Tingle RPG As far as other RPG's that are already out, Lunar DS and Lost Magic are both pretty bleh. Lost Magic is a maybe if you can get it cheap. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() Bless the Maker and His water. Bless the coming and the going of Him. |
Don't forget Xenosaga I & II and Tales of the Tempest.

But yeah, you're pretty much gonna have to wait for most of the games Starman listed if you want another good DS RPG. A few other other upcoming games that look good include Magical Starsign (Magical Vacation 2 in Japan, where it's already out), Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles DS, and Rune Factory: New Harvest Moon. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
Though an action RPG, Lunar Knights has me sold to get a DS when it coes out.

There's also this supposedly quirky RPG, Contact, which seems to have an Earthbound-esque quality to it.
And the new Megaman Battle Network series which seems to be a spinoff of the previous Battle Network series. So far, I'm hyped for FF 3 the most. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? Return to Crystal Lake... ![]() My Wii Friend Code 1942-4227-2974-0276

Yeah, Contact looks bloody fantastic. Everyone should buy it because it's by the Killer 7 team~ Too bad Atlus is the publisher, so zero copies will actually be released. "HERE'S THIN AIR, CATCH IT BEFORE IT GOES ON EBAY!"
As for stuff out now, there's also Tao's Adventure ![]() But apparently it's radioactive dog vomit, which makes it fifty seven times better than Lunar DS! Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Tao's Adventure blows, man. Totally sucks.
LostMagic is more of an RTS RPG hybrid, but like was mentioned earlier, if you can't draw real well you're going to have some trouble with this, as you have to quickly and accurately draw some rather complex symbols to cast spells. It's a cool feature, though. Most amazing jew boots |
There are a TON of good RPG's on the GBA which could be used in the other slot.

I know it's not what you're looking for at all but the DS also has a wide variety of games you can purchase.

![]() There is a game called Spectrobes coming out, I don't know if it looks any good though I just saw one screenshot I was speaking idiomatically. |
Not too big a fan of RPGs on handhelds, but FFIII looks neat. I just hope they keep whatever difficulty the original game had. The difficulty of the FF version on Dawn of Souls was a joke. There was no challenge whatsoever.

Seriously though, there aren't too many good RPGs out for the DS, even though it would seem like a good console for menu-driven stuff. I was really looking forward to Lost Magic, but what I've played of it has been significantly underwhelming. FELIPE NO |
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow has neat rpg elements, despite being an action game.
Heard bad things about Lunar: Dragon Song (running=lose hp!) You should definitely wait for the FF3 Remake. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Yeah, LostMagic isn't really all that great. It's fun for a while, but the controls are pretty crap. I like the spellcasting, but the MP crap is stupid, imo. This is more of a Strategy-RPG than just an RPG, though.
Lunar sounds like shit, so I'd wait for FF3/Contact/Deep Labryinth/everything else everybody has said. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Lost Magic is totally worthless.
People have mixed opinions about Children of Mana, but I really enjoy the game. Contact looks like the best out out of the lot, though, simply by what trailers I've seen for the game. What they really need to do is bring Cave Story to the DS. Most amazing jew boots |

Actually it'll probably never happen because Studio Variant is said to have started making the game and a remake of the game without Pixel's permission. Sorry to you hopefuls. Just go google it. There are a couple articles and stuff.

Well, I liked the casting spells thing a lot as a principle, but I found it almost impossible to work with. I've only played it for about half an hour though so I can't say if it gets better with practice.
It also just seemed kind of "Generic Japanese RPG #2357" to me, but then I said the same thing about DQ8 and people just lapped that shit up. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Lost Magic...The one DS game I've bought thus far I've regretted.
The game's lone selling point (the screen-based spell casting) was old by the time I got to my 4th scenario. It's quite gimmicky actually (as in, sounds cool, but frantically drawing on the screen does little to enhance the experience...This would still be a bad game if you were selecting spells with a cursor) If an enemy catches the hero, he dies because he can't fight back, he can't cast anything while being pummeled and he normally can't get away fast enough. And on top of that, my hero normally runs out of magic after 3 chants and has to be at a dead stop to recharge...Not good if you have monsters on your tail to begin with. Of course, most of the monsters are downright stoopid once they settle onto their set trails...This is negated by the need for a timer on each scenario. As if the spells and monsters weren't annoying enough. And I don't see the characters or storyline making up for the game's gameplay shortcomings anytime soon. That's probably an understatement, although the characters have sort of a Miyazaki-anime look to them. I love a challenge, but the game's difficulty comes from the shoddy (and gimmicky) mechanics and not well-designed scenarios. I played it for 3 hours and I have no desire to go back to it. Sorry in advance to anyone who enjoys this. Jam it back in, in the dark.
