Considering buying Xbox 1
I've finally decided to buy an Xbox...maybe. Used boxes are down to $100. A tad expensive for my tastes, but I might buy one if I can find more games that tickle my fancy. I've never wanted to buy a whole system for a single franchise before, but after some recent Halo playings I really want to get it. So here's what you do: other than Halo, suggest some top-notch games I would be interested in. I need more than just Halo (and HL2 and Doom since I don't have a PC) to turn me to the dark side. I'm especially disuaded from buying one because of Xbox's seemingly crappy library of games. I browsed Gamestop today to see if anything looked interesting, and nothing did. I need your help finding the good games!
I'm not interested in RPG's or sports games. Give me action, strategy, shooters, and MAYBE platformers if they're really good. I want only your highest recommendations, I don't have money to spend on worthless stuff. PC to Xbox ports are acceptable, but don't suggest any multi-platform games that I've already played on PS2. (also, I've already beaten Fable. Games like Fable are alright, but it was too short to justify the cost. Doesn't Xbox have more worthwhile games?) Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
I don't know I heard Splinter Cell series, Panzer Dragoon Orta, JSRF, Ninja Gaiden, Voodoo Vince, Psychonauts, Shenmue II, Gunvalkyrie, and Crimson Skies were excellent. I don't know though thats just me.

BZ's post + Devo's post + House of the Dead 3, Dead or Alive series, Beyond Good and Evil, Fuzion Frenzy, GTA Vice City, Battlefront 2, H A L O
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Breakdown and Jade Empire are quite awesome as well. Really great games.
I really, really recommend the KOTOR games though. Despite their RPG status, they really are the best Xbox games around. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Counter-Strike is good, since you don't have a PC, but it's worthless without Xbox Live. Phantasy Star Online is good too. Yes, it's an RPG, but if feels more like an action game than anything else. The only bad thing about it is the ridiculous Hunter's License. But then, Phantasy Star Universe is coming out pretty soon, so it'll probably be obscelete by then.
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
How does Counter-strike Xbox compare to the PC version? I love the PC version from the little I've played of it. Plus it's like the only Xbox game with custom soundtrack. I will be getting LIVE for Halo 2 if I buy an Xbox.
I've always heard good things about PSO. Maybe it's time I try a MMORPG. Other games: -Splinter Cell series: Already beaten on PS2. I will be getting Chaos Theory again for it's god damn stupid ass superior online mode. Fucking Ubisoft.:aargh: -Panzer Dragoon Orta: From what I've read this game was highly anticipated, but a let down. Maybe I read wrong? ![]() -JSRF: Sorry, I beat Tony Hawk 2 ages ago. ![]() -Ninja Gaiden: I know this game is hard as hell, but from what I've seen this game does pique my interest. I almost forgot about it, good job guys!:superhappy: :ninja: -Voodoo Vince: Never heard of it. Describe please. Yes, I am lazy. No, I've never heard of Google. Is that an Xbox game too? ![]() -Psychonauts: This is multi-platform. I've heard good things about it and I intend to play it eventually, but I'll buy it for whichever system sells it for cheaper. Unless there's a huge difference between the PS2 and Xbox versions (other than the .002% better grafix).:eyebrow: -Shenmue II: Never played a Shenmue game before. I don't know if I'm really interested in this series. Why are these games so loved? ![]() -Gunvalkyrie: I'll look into it. ![]() -Crimson Skies: Sorry, no flight game can ever hope to compete with Ace Combat (looks at username). But I guess I can't play Ace Combat every second of my life, so I'll check it out.:eyebrow: -House of the Dead 3: Um...RESIDENT EVIL 4. Nope. ![]() -Dead or Alive series: BOOBIES! ![]() -Beyond Good and Evil: I bought this for $20 for PS2 a year ago and haven't even played it yet. I also have the unrelated book which I have yet to read. -Fuzion Frenzy: Yarg. I remember hating the demo for this thing. ![]() -GTA Vice City: PS2 ages ago. ![]() -Battlefront 2: PS2. ![]() Well, I'm almost convinced to buy an Xbox. Any other games you guys are forgetting? How's that thar Steel Battalion? I like mech games somewhat (Woot ZOE!), but most of them are too slow for me (::Looks at Armored Core's slow turning:: ). I'm sure as hell not buying a $500 controller for it, is it any good without it? What about essential Xbox accesories, will I need any? Are there any other words of advice from you Xbox owners? What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
Since you obviously don't know what you're talking about when it comes to Steel Battalion, I'll fill you in.
No, it's NOT like Zone of the Enders. It's not some anime/gundam style horseshit. It's a SIM. You're piloting a walking tank that's the size of a building. No, it doesn't have a sword, and no, it can't fly, and no, it doesn't have wings. It "turns slow" because that's what mechs in most mech games do. And it's what makes sense. If you can't handle Armoured Core's pacing, you will HATE SB. Flat out. That said, SB is fantastic if you like that sort of thing, and I was going to recommend it until you said that "turning too slow" is a turnoff. And you can't play it without the controller. You fail for comparing Jet Set to Tony Hawk though, just sayin'. And Psychonauts is probably slightly easier to find on the Xbox. And lastly, Orta is fucking awesome. Whoever told you it wasn't simply has no brain or taste. It's that simple. And sicne you're obviously just looking at the fucking covers when you're thinking about games here, I'm going to ask where the ding dong fuck you get away with comparing RE4 to House of the Dead 3. Edit: Also no one has mentioned RALLISPORT CHALLENGE 2. Something is wrong with you guys. Edit edit: Or Forza or PGR2. Edit edit edit: [01:36] <+Xijar> "halo? sorry I beat goldeneye 007 ten years ago" [01:36] <+Xijar> dumbass How ya doing, buddy? |

When I think House of the Dead I think zombies. When I think zombies, I think Resident Evil. Since RE4 is one very kick ass game, well, that's how I drew that conclusion. Having never played House of the Dead, I may have been a bit pre-emptive. And yes, I have no clue about Xbox games which is why I made this thread.
I have no problem with sims, but only when I in the mood for them. Ususally I'm in the mood for faster-paced games like ZOE or Devil May Cry. I've always had a problem with some mech franchises because of how impracticle they make mechs in a futuristic world. Why would I have a need to kill things with a slow moving, slow turning mech when there are fighter jets and missiles that make it nothing more than target practice? Maybe that's why I've always prefered flight sims over mech games. Thank you for reminding me about Rallisport Challenge. I remember now that my friend highly recommended it to me when he rented an Xbox, and we have the same taste in games and are both avid Gran Turismo fans. I might hold off on Forza though, I've played quite a bit of it in the stores and I have no need for another The Driving Simulator. Also, as much as I love 007 Goldeneye, it has no online mode. Edit: What I meant about Tony Hawk 2 was that it was the last good skating game I enjoyed. The novelty of skating around in a game has completely wore off on me. As far as I know JSRF is about skating around and spray painting stuff. Sorry, not for me. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() [ MOBIUS ]

Star Wars: Battlefront II is a really good game as well. At least I thought so. I enjoyed the dog-fights and leveling up, which isn't common for a shooting game. Though not many people would recommend it, I would also buy Phantasy Star Online. Then again, you didn't want an RPG, and two out of the three things I'm listing here are just that. Lol. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Conkers Live and Reloaded was pretty good, it's a port of Conkers Bad Furday for N64 with better graphics and an OK online multiplayer
Unreal Championship 2 was a decent game too, and it's cheap. They introduced melee weapons to the franchise in this game. there's always Soul Calibur 2 If you don't own for PS2, or havn't played it to death. The Xbox version includes Spawn This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

Hey, they don't sell subscription cards for Xbox anymore! Why didn't anyone tell me! Where can I get a subscription code?
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
I wouldn't know about your XBOX Live! question, since I never used it, but if you do get an XBOX1 and don't take it online, then you should softmod it. Softmodded XBOX is teh awesome.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
I like how OP is such a prick even though people are trying to help him pick out games and otherwise give him advice. Jeez.
If your holiness likes mech games, check out MechAssault 1 & 2, they're pretty solid games and they play nicely online. As far as other games of interest on the system, check out The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, Freedom Fighters, Far Cry Instincts, both of the Brothers in Arms (the PS2 versions are shit), Top Spin (if you like tennis), Star Wars: Republic Commando, Project Gotham Racing 2, and all the other great games that people suggested, my top picks including KOTOR 1 & 2, and Jade Empire. And please, next time, when people are giving you advice and trying to help you out, don't dismiss their advice with lame excuses and general laziness to do a bit of your own research. It's just rude. FELIPE NO

The Xbox really doesn't have that many great exclusive titles other than the most obvious ones. It's just always the best when it comes to multiplatform titles.
If you are mainly into action the core list is just mainly: Halo Halo 2 Unreal Championship 2 Ninja Gaiden Dead or Alive 3 Dead or Alive Ultimate Chronicles of Riddick Panzer Dragoon Orta House of the Dead 3 is fun for like a day, but not much more. Perhaps a couple of other games here and there. Unless you're planning to mod it, or can get one for really cheap, I'd recommend just saving your money. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]()

Good Chocobo |
I don't own an Xbox, but I've heard good things about Phantom Dust. It's apparantly a Card RPG with realtime action. A friend at another forum used to be obsessed with it and clocked 100+ hours on Live.
Most amazing jew boots |
If you can find them, I recommend Otogi and Otogi 2. The second one is especially hard to find, but you won't find any games out there that better blend action and RPG. Two true gems.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
House of the Dead is an arcade game where you shoot zombies......a lot. Resident Evil is a survival horror game. These games are nothing alike.
Ninja Gaiden Black should last you for a couple weeks if you're tenacious and don't mind dying a lot (unless you're good, in which case you'll only die a little). This is probably the only good game on X-Box. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Okay, I bought one just before work today. Thanks alot for the game suggestions, Xbox has a few more worth while titles than I realized (I completely forgot Chonicles of Riddick was a good game). Unfortunately I can't figure out how to get on LIVE since no stores sell subscription cards anymore and Xbox.com/connect isn't any help either. If I can't get on LIVE then that really defeats half the purpose. Hopefully I can figure it out, otherwise I'll have to return it because I need the money for so many other things (broken iPod needs replaced, PSP, DS, new TV, not to mention saving up for the multi-billion dollar PS3).
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() [ MOBIUS ] |
If your dashboard doesn't already have the Xbox Live tab, just buy/rent/borrow any recently released game and it will automatically install an updated dash and you can just activate your account through there.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
Well, I've been on LIVE for about a week now (I found one last subscription card at Target). Good stuff. I've only really played HALO 2 online, that alone has almost justified the cost. I currently have Halo 2, Doom 3, SC:Chaos Theory, and Crimson skies. I plan on getting HL2 and Ralisport Challenge 2 soon, maybe Ninja Gaiden as well (wasn't there another version of this that includes easy mode?). Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I'll keep them in mind. Now I can start saving for PSP.

Too bad nobody sane is purely on the original Xbox live right now. Missing out big time. But as long as you have fun I guess.

Chocobo |
Either you're bieng ripped or Xboxes are cheap around here. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
You like racing games? Need for Speed underground 1 and 2 and Project Gotham Racing are your best bets. Burnout 3 is awesome as well, but it has much more of an arcade feel. Try 'em out.
