How do we call this decade we're living in?

Some refer to the decade as "The Two Thousands", but many find that usage awkward and incorrect for a number of reasons, most notably the fact that, formally, the "Two Thousands" (that is, years whose spoken name begins with the words "two thousand") will last for a thousand years and not just the ten years of the "00" decade. Written in numeral form, the decade can be written either as the "2000s" or as the "'00s". But looking for a name that has the same "feel" as 'The Nineties' or 'The Fifties' has been problematic, especially in the United States.
So yeah, how are we supposed to call this decade to differentiate it from the ones to come?

Discutan, perritas.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Well if you put it in that perspective we'll just have to wait to 2020 in order to recycle the twenties and so on. New Twenties still sounds akward.

The British tabloid press have tended to settle for "The Noughties", because of the horrendously Benny Hill-esque pun they can use it for.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Just call it "early 21st century". That's pretty much how the period from 1900 to 1920 is refered to and it doesn't sound too bad.

But that means we'd have to refer to each year as " The sixth year of the new 21st century" using this year as an example. Sounds pretty lame and draaaaawn out if you ask me.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Everything seems to sound lame, so if someone comes up with something that's not, s/he may be my hero. I'll just suggest something while I'm at it: I'll go with the "sub-tens."

What's wrong with The Zeros?
It's simple, easy, and correct.

Couldn't you just call these years "The New Millenium"?

We're not even through with this era... maybe there'll be some defining moment or something that might describe it better, like Bush era, similar to Reagan years. I hope not though.

The zeros does have a nice ring to it. But taken out of context it's kind of a downer. At least in my opinion.

I'm for "the 21st century". I think it's perfectly fine though the zeros does sound quite interesting!

"The political situation now is just like that of when it was in the zeros ..."

Lol, I probably couldn't fathom my history teacher speaking to me like that!

The problem with "The Zeroes" is people will misspell it. The "Aughts" or "Naughts" is less likely to be butchered by grade-schoolers.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I think that can apply to any era, and that's because of the people saying it, not what it's called. Twentys, Forties, Sixteys, Sephenties, Eihgtys, etc. Catch my drift?

If people butcher words like you just did I'd hope they'd go back to grade school.

I like the idea of the "millennials" as well.

Yeah, well I was just trying to point out that "Zeros" isn't any harder to spell than some of the other ones (e.g. Eighties). :P

I understand what you are saying, but I still don't see how it is much different than any other time period.

Results 1 - 10 of about 16,700,000 for eighties
Results 1 - 10 of about 22,000 for eightys

I realize that there are relatively less hits for "eightys" than there are for "zeroes", but I'm just trying to say that people will always spell it wrong. If that's the case, spelling shouldn't be a factor when deciding the new name.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

From 2003 to about now we are heavy with political issues such as "War on Terror". Besides this, depending on where you live, there are numerous local interpretations of what's happening around us so general names will not be amiss.

I personally refer to this age as the Millennium or the New Millenium. 2010 era (two thousand and ten era) is good to describe exactly those years because this is often used as a milestone term in business and research objectives. Beyond 2000 is general for the next 20-30 years and Greater 2000 may follow.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
