Independence War 2 Having Problems

I'm on a Geforce FX 5200 w/ 64 MB VRAM, and at the moment the game is slowing down for me, even at the lowest settings. The problem can be reproduced by going to max throttle/speed, then slowing back down to zero speed. After that, the framerate gets halved or even falls to 25% of what it's supposed to be. The only workaround right now is to exit to the main menu and back again, or set my ship to max throttle again.

Again, all my settings are as low (or off) as they can get, W-Buffer is off, and I've even tried enabling Static Buffers in the flux.ini file. I've also tried changing nVidia driver versions around but that hasn't helped either, nor has setting compatibility to Win98/ME. If anyone can help, that'd be great.

EDIT: Found the problem is related to my USB gamepad; it's a PS2 -> USB converter. Anyone have suggestions on drivers or the like?

How ya doing, buddy?
