Mosquito bites

How do you deal with these bites? How do you stop them from biting you? Do you hide in the house and seal up all openings? Also, what's the most you've been bitten at one time?

I used to spend money on anti-itch creams and stuff. Someone told me about the power of rubbing alcohol and said it stops the itch faster than anti-itch creams. It works pretty good.

Because my family lives by the water, I get bitten more than I should. I remember one time last year I got bitten more than 30 times because I had shorts on and walked through their yard instead of running.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

1. Don't wear blue. I read that somewhere.

2. Don't eat bananas. I also read that somewhere.

3. Get rid of any standing water on your property, but since you live near water anyway, I guess it can't be helped.

4. Cover yourself up. Pretty self-explantory.

Lucky there's no skeeters where I live. I went to camp for a week or so during high school, and there were skeeters everywhere. Although I've been bitten several times, I did fare better than others.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

The avon product Skin So Soft makes them stay well away from you and it's a bit less nasty feeling and smelling than most sprays. Also wearing covering clothing helps a lot. I'll go out on a limb and assume it's pretty hot where you are though so I'd stick to things that repell them.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

That's pretty much what I do. I don't go outside for much during mosquito season. Aside from the obvious things to do to keep them from biting you, I heard from somewhere that eating a lot of onion and garlic keeps them off. I'm pretty sure that that's some old wives' tale, though.

I don't do much to deal with bites. I just ignore them. If they're particularly itchy, I just spray whatever anti-itch stuff we have on hand on them. When I was little, I would scratch the hell out of them, but, when I was about seven or so, I scratched one on my ass so much that I ended up with infantigo. I haven't scratched bites since then.

Eat garlic. The scent will become detectable in your sweat. You may not sense it but insects will, and they're repulsed by the smell.

Garlic is good for you in general, so eating a clove once a week should be enough to keep the bugs off.

I don't think that garlic supplements will work as well, however. The oil is the active repellent and the pills have significantly less amounts. You don't have to chew the clove. Just dice it and swallow the bits like aspirin. If you wish, chase it with a tablespoon of Mylanta to reduce any stomach gas that sometimes occurs with garlic.

Similarly, I've heard that citrus fruits can ward off mosquitos. I think it's also the oils in them. This is the basis for the Citronella candles.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I once had five bites on one arm around the same area. It happened when I was in a different country, but I managed to heal quickly by just applying some anti-itch cream.

The sprays have been helpful from my experience, and I haven't used any other method.

Don't linger by non-moving water and wear long sleeved shirts and jeans. I know it's summer but that's the price you gotta pay if you don't want lots of bites.

If it's really hot out and you just can't cover up I recommend "OFF" brand bug repellant. It's worked the best for me.

My advice: give up. Especially in my area, there's not going about without getting a bite within 10 minutes outside. I always carry around Tiger Balm to immediately apply on my fresh bite. Doing so will not only prevent itching but also reduce swelling and eventually, within the next day, the bite is gone. Tiger Balm is my savior!

We use Skin-So-Soft, too. I don't think there was ever a time in my life when we didn't have it in the house, but it works great. Whenever we notice mosquitos around we put spray some on and pretty much never get bitten.

Most of the time we can keep those bastards out of our house with a few mosquito punks and citronella candles. We don't have much of a problem (we live next to a canal/stream but it doesn't seem to affect anything) with them but we get rid of them as fast as possible because we don't want them biting our dogs.

Don't you live in Hawaii, kupomog? I seem to recall a larger issue with sand fleas than mosquitos when I visited.

Rubbbing garlic and toothpaste over the bite can also help.

I had a bite last year that took up 1/2 of my leg due to swelling and I could not walk for 4 days. Unfortunately, none of the basic methods worked for me so I had to go get a shot.

Get a bunch of these guys and let them run rampant throughout the home. Apparently they eat mosquitos, or maybe it's just what people think. I dunno, maybe I'm just a sucker for hi-res pics.

Actually, I read that these crane flies, or mosquito hawks, do not eat mosquitos unfortunately. I wonder why they are called that then?

As for avoding those skeeters, try not to wear bright, floral colors. Also do not where fragrances or basically anything that makes you look or smell like a flower. A good repellent is one with plenty of deet. I know a lot has been said about the health affects but I read that it is harmless if you simply follow the directions.

I didn't think the mosquitos were that bad in my back yard when I was out there the other day, but the grass is long and there's lots of trees so I guess the've got places to hide. I ended up having four large welts on my back and I don't even remember feeling anything land on me [my shirt was covering my back anyways]. one was the size of a quarter, one the size of a dime, and the other two the size of pennies. these were like the xbox of squitter bites.

Skin-So-Soft works wonderfully to keep the bugs off. also if you know you'll be around mosquitos, don't wear any bodyspray or perfumes unless they're citris based. I had a vanilla scent on and I think that attracts bugs, unfortunately.

if you have a problem with the bites itching, which will just make them worse, then I'd suggest washing them off and then using an anti-itch cream. I found Gold Bond worked pretty quick, but it's more of a mind over matter thing I would think. also, I know Sunlight soap works really well on poison ivy rashes, but it could also neutralize whatever's inside the bite to take the itch away. atleast with poison ivy it removes the oil, but I'm not sure if it'll work the same way on mosquito bites.

get yourself some purple martins. they're birds that love to eat mosquitos. my grandfather used to build bird houses that specifically only fit the purple martins, so that's a good way to get them in your area.

I can't deal with bites and I've become paranoid since my friend nearly died from dengue last year. I use just regular old insect repellent but to be truthful, it doesn't do much for arachnids. Damn lotions/sticks attract spiders.

I'll close myself in my room under my blankets if I have to. Outdoors people burn langsat peels (local fruit in Asia)--they say it drives mosquitos away.

I can't stand nippers and black flies, if I am working in the garden or something I will wear long-sleve shirts, pants, a hat with those fly nets over my head.... but I do love picking at the bites though...

ok, I live in a tropical country... mosquitos are something common around here I don't know what that cream "skin so soft" or the others mentioned here are made of, but I've only seen tourists using them and honestly they don't work... but I guess if you see it working it will do, considering now the bug spray case those formulas are made in foreign countries mostly so it doesn't work in some types of mosquitos depending on the species some things might work others won't for example in Puerto Rico where Devo was the Anopheles species(common in the south hemisphere) is completely different than the Aedes Aegyptis wich can be found almost anywhere. The best thing to do is to stay away from the water sources they use to reproduce.... since they only sting for that, only female mosquitos do it as long as you are away from one of the hatching spots you should be fine.

I apologize in advance for any typo or mistake there, I do know my english isn't very good... find anything point it out, it helps.

for the itching i've always used a brand called Mopiko which works pretty well.

as for avoiding, i read somewhere that taking a large amount of a certain B vitamin kept them away, it was around 500mg of B5 a day i think, can't really remember.

another solution my sister and i discovered to stop ourselves getting bitten at night was to turn the air con up >.>

How ya doing, buddy?

The best solution is to wear long sleeves and pants. If not, then use some anti-mosquito spray-on and lit a bug-off candle.

Does alcohol really work? I might have to try it sometimes.

I can't really say much about the sand fleas, never encountered one myself. Got lotsa mosquitos, though. I always hear about them, especially from my friends on neighbor islands. We're lucky 'cause the mosquitoes seem to hate our punk/citronella fortified house. I remember we had a bad outbreak of dengue fever a few years ago, too.

Yikes, I just suffer through it the hard way and let them be itchy until they're gone, not trying to touch them. The only consolation I offer myself is water and a gentle rub, since no cream or ointment has had any noticeable effect with me.
