Any ideas on what i should upgrade?
Ok, im about to come across a little money (400 USD to be exact, all of it is being dumped into PC upgrades) and id like to know what i should take care of first. Having that small amount of money doesnt give me very many options, so i am asking what would be most practical to go for. I mostly listen to music, but i play the occasional game here and there. (mostly WoW)
Heres what i have now: WinFAST SiS 760 MoBo AMD Athlon 64 2800+ 1.80ghz 512 mb ram 60 gig HD(IDE) Sound Blaster Live 24 bit ATI ALL IN WONDER 9600 128mb ram 52x48x48 CD\RW (Im getting a DVD burner first thing, so we can strike that off the list) If i need to add anything else just let me know. Thanks in advance! Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Should be fine for WoW.
If there isn't anything that you are unsatisfied with in your current machine, then why upgrade? If there are things that are too slow, not enough X, not enough Y, etc. then maybe you can let us know what areas to concentrate on. More RAM is always good, a new video card would help WoW's performance some. If you are running out of HDD space, you could add one of those. My general advice is always to put off upgrading until there is something that you really feel the 'need' to upgrade. You'll save money in the long run by not doing many minor upgrades. You can perhaps save the money for the next time you really overhaul the system/buy a new machine. There's nowhere I can't reach.

It sounds like you know what you want already, and I agree. Your system will already run WoW just fine with what it has. But if you must spend all the money I suppose I would look into the following:
- Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Sound Card ~ $120 - Sapphire Radeon X800GTO 256MB AGP 4X/8X ~ $170 (If it matters, it does have combo pricing with a plextor DVD burner) You'll lose you tv tuner ability, but if you weren't using it in the first place I'd say the above videocard is a worthy upgrade. And depending how much you have left I would either blow the rest on another 512MB stick of ram and/or a new keyboard/mouse setup. Oh well, good luck! This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I agree with PUG1911, another stick of 512MB RAM will help WOW run better, but so will a better graphics card.
You could get a motherboard that supports PCI-e, but still allows you to keep the same processor. ASUS K8N-E ATX AMD Motherboard - $48 Radeon X850XT XTASY X850XTPCI-E Video Card - OEM - $160 CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM System Memory - $41 KWORLD VS-LTV7131R(RF W/FM) TV Tuner Card - $28 You could leave the TV-Tuner card out, but i don't know if you use it or not. I reckon that you should stick with the Sound card that you have for the moment. Grand Total = $277 Grand Total (w/o TV Tuner) = $249 I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
Another 512MB of RAM and another hard drive. The extra RAM will help decrease load times in-game and reduce intense hard drive reading. It made a huge difference for a friend.
I personally can't stand a PC without a second hard drive. I would use it to store all of my files, like music and video. It also makes reinstalling Windows a whole lot easier since all your important files are already in a safe place. 200 to 300GB are really inexpensive nowadays. If you're just into WoW and everyday things like music, then your computer doesn't need much more than that. I was speaking idiomatically. |
1GB+ of RAM would help WoW immensely, 512MB is pushing it in terms of performance. Also you can bag a 320GB HDD now for below $110 as I did on Newegg.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I forgot to say that this is a gift certificate to a local computer accessory retailer, so it will go to waste if i DONT buy computer stuff with it. Im going to go for more ram, and another HD for sure. but after that im really not too sure what to get. Thanks for all the input so far guys!

If it'd go to waste, then you might as well go for a new graphics card as well. I'd love to add a 7600GT personally, but you'd have to look at something that will fit your board, as it's likely AGP.
I'd also pick up some canned air, and some writable media while you are there. Most amazing jew boots
