Getting a new free e-mail

I'm going to start at a new job, so I have to get a real e-mail that has my name in it and not something like gaming@hotmail.com...

Is Gmail still the best...?
I know Gmail is using Web 2.0 technology, but are there others...?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I have a yahoo, gmail and hotmail account, and GMail is certainly what I'd reccomend.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Gmail, no doubt about it. It has awesome features, and it supports POP3 as well. Don't think anything else comes close to it.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I haven't used Hotmail for a while, but from what I can gather, it's bottom tier among the big three. Yahoo and Gmail are both fine. Gmail has a different way of doing some ways, so it might be strange at first. Personally, I prefer Gmail. I can send you an invite if needed.

How ya doing, buddy?

I use Gmail and my university email for job applications and the like, but I do recommend Gmail. I haven't used Hotmail or Yahoo in a long time now.

Being that I've used Hotmail and Yahoo, I must say do NOT use Hotmail. Their "spam protection" for free accounts is crap. And sadly, Yahoo's lately has been going by the wayside. >_>

Go with htpp://www.fastmail.fm - Their free service is nothing to write home about, but their paid service has the best spam protection on the net, and it's pretty cheap. It's not intended for the same kind of consumer who would choose gmail, but it certainly has some advantages.

It's ultra-reliable, the site is ultra-fast, and they support POP3 and IMAP-4 for paid accounts. With paid accounts you get a certain amount of free webspace at http://username.fastmail.fm/ which you can also use just as an online dump for important files. It's hard to describe some of the extra features it has to make your email experience just that little bit nicer, but I would never go back to just free email, now.

Doesn't every ISP give out free e-mail addresses with a paid subscription?

I don't think I could ever switch off Gmail after using it for about a year now. The service is absoutely perfect, nothing too frilly, light on the advertising, lots of space, fast, and filters out spam quite effectively, as you might expect from Google.

While it does POP, I don't even know why anyone would use it. I did for a while, but their interface is so effective now that I can't find a more worthwhile mail program to use instead.

After using Fastmail for two years, I think that people must be insane not to pay for email. YMMV.

The extra services they provide matter to me.

1) Sure, if you're happy with a POP3 service that often isn't up to much.

2) I've had 3 ISPs in the last 2 years. The words "fuck" and "that" spring irresistably to mind

I use Mail.app to check mine. I love the Gmail online interface as well, and was sold on it as soon as I got into the keyboard shortcuts. I mean, an efficient web based interface? It's been a long time coming.

I like using a good and proper mail application though. Makes checking old e-mail or writing offline easy for those times when the Internet is less than working. Plus, as good as Gmail's interface is, Mail's is just that little bit nicer to me.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I love POP email, because then I can use Thunderbird. It's just so much more responsive and easy to manipulate than webmail. The only obvious downside is not being able to access it from anywhere. But I have VNC running on my PC, so in a way, I can.
