Southland Tales - The New Richard Kelly Movie
http://southlandtales.com/
The upcoming extremely secretive film from Richard Kelly, director of Donnie Darko, it's been picked up for Cannes. Only a brief synopsis has recently been made available: "SOUTHLAND TALES is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros (The Rock) is an action star who's stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark , a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy." The website itself is very cryptic, I suppose kind of like the official Donnie Darko website. The film is to be preceded by six (graphic?) novels. I don't know, but this movie sounds bad. I liked Donnie Darko and I like eclectic ensemble casts, but something is just giving me an ominous feeling about this movie. Any thoughts? Jam it back in, in the dark. |
It sounded like it might be watchable until "Boxer Santaros".
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Notable casting decisions to mull over:
Justin Timberlake, Kevin Smith, Mandy Moore. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I figured that I should post information about the three graphic novels.
I: Two Roads Diverge ![]() June 30, 2008. One of the world's most famous actors has disappeared. Boxer Santaros awakens deep in the Nevada desert... alone, stricken with amnesia. He is rescued by a drifter named Fortunio Balducci, only to discover that the world around him has suddenly changed. America now stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster... approaching the three-year anniversary of dual nuclear attacks on Texas soil. As Boxer struggles to regain his memory, his paths cross with a mysterious adult film star named Krysta now at the Nevada/California state line. Krysta reveals her psychic abilities to Boxer in the form of a prophetic screenplay that foreshadows the apocalypse... II: Fingerprints ![]() July 1, 2008. Ronald Taverner awakens on a houseboat on Lake Mead, Nevada... stricken with amnesia. He soon discovers that he is involved in a conspiracy to kidnap and impersonate his twin brother Roland... a police officer from Hermosa Beach, California. Roland discovers that his brother has ties to a neo-Marxist extremist group. He is quickly dispatched on a top secret mission with an escort named Zora Charmichaels, armed with a mysterious drug manufactured by the Treer Corporation. Meanwhile... Boxer Santaros, Krysta Now and Fortunio Balducci have arrived in the city of Palmdale, following the clues hidden in a prophetic screenplay called The Power. III: The Mechanicals ![]() July 2, 2008. The search for Boxer Santaros has reached up into the highest levels of national security. His mother-in-law, Nana Mae Frost, is the wife of the Republican vice-presidential candidate... Texas senator Bobby Frost. Nana Mae is the former deputy director of the NSA, and she has recently been named head of US-Ident... a colossal think tank formed under the protection of the Patriot Act. Us-Ident has just opened its first surveillance facility in downtown Los Angeles, as the Republicans race to secure the state of California for the first time in many years. Meanwhile, Ronald Taverner has begun preparations for his role in a dangerous game of political extortion instigated by the neo-Marxists. He is haunted by a recurring dream that could unlock the key to a top secret scientific experiment. Two Roads Diverge is supposed to be released on May 25, Fingerprints on June 25, and The Mechanicals on July 25. The whole saga was originally conceived to be told in nine parts (six graphic novels and then the final three parts would be the movie), but it got condensed to three graphic novels and the remaining three parts are the movie. I'm pretty excited for the release of the movie. It's in competition at Cannes, so it's gotta be at least worth watching. ('course, I'm a Richard Kelly fan because of Donnie Darko.) I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I wonder what Tears for Fears song'll get covered this time? I hope it's "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Maybe someone in the movie will want to rule the world. Then it'll make a lot of sense.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
Eh. I like Donnie Darko but much like Enterprise or pretty much anything - the internet ruined it. Circle jerking over how much you like the movie doesn't validate that the movie was good.
This being said - this is only the man's second movie. I don't see it as a major reason to get excited. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
