Geeky moments

Most of us who post here are geeks/nerds (not sure what the difference is); you kind of have to be to post on an internet forum. Unless you're a Sheldon or a Moss, you probably try to hide the level of your geekery, but sometimes it reveals itself at inopportune times. Maybe you use an internet meme in a sentence, accidentally quote Star Trek, reveal that you spend all your waking hours watching DBZ, or just do something generally weird.

I had one such moment this morning. During our daily staff meeting, my boss asked me to search his email for a specific item. Looking through the stack of papers I had brought to the meeting, I realized I had the printed email with me, and I said, "Huzzah!" and handed it to him. I realized what I'd done when one of my other bosses looked at me funny and said, "What did you say?" and my third boss told him that he must not attend enough renaissance fairs.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

It's too bad that Keldar wasn't there to put them in their place. Do you still see him come by the office?

I use "huzzah" all the time simply because it's a fun word to say, but I rarely ever get comments about it. Usually only from people who've never heard it before. I never make any effort to hide my geekery. I just don't mention it unless there's a reason. Can't recall any specific times that it caused embarrassment, but I could be blocking them out.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

For the record, I have said "Huzzah" at least 4 times today

The only thing I can think of is this little incident. Generally speaking the people I interact with on a regular basis are as geeky as me, so it all balances out~

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Coincidentally enough, he's coming by tomorrow. Haven't seen him in a long time, though.

I've routinely used "w00t" and "GG" in my previous job (before I went back to school) and it raised my boss' eyebrows quite a number of time.

It was fun being a geek working in the airline business because you can totally get away with signing off on a phone call with "live long and prosper" and you get by your day knowing that the other person got a total kick out of it.

Here where I am... eh, not quite so much. There seems to be a bit of manga/anime/video game connosiers in my department, but I'd rather not show that I'm that eloquent with such material since Japanese people (meaning 98% of my office) are quite judgemental.

I was speaking idiomatically.

This isn't self inflicted, but I am refered to as the 'IT Guy' at work. I am not the 'IT Guy'.

In fact, just today, we had the head of Airgas Southwest in our plant. I was introduced as "The QA/Safety Manager, and IT Guy." Bah.

Wish they'd pay me for IT, too. >=|

I can sympathize with that a bit. I'm the only one that seems to know how to work the audio/video equipment in the office. Once people figured that out, everyone, even people I don't work for/with, bug me for help on setting up video conferences. Drives me insane.

I live on Luke Dr, so when I talk on the phone and it comes up, it's often confused for Loop or other similar sounding words. One day I was calling the maintenance line for a problem with my house and it happened again, so I said "Luke, as in Skywalker." and was rewarded with an awkward silence. Fantastic.

I like that your third boss got it, at least.

Pssh, everyone uses huzzah, it's not a nerd affection at all.

My nerdiest moments are generally being the only person I know who laughs at font jokes.

That's quite the opposite of being nerdy, no nerd on the planet would wear those shoes, as shown by the derision I get for them here and the number of people in real life who stop me and tell me how awesome my shoes are. Nerdy shoes are those gay-arse Mario ones Sprout has.
