Ecco - Songs of Time - st. gabriel's mask This is just the sort of new agey, underwatery song I'd expect from Ecco. Not the strongest track in the world, but it has solid atmosphere.

Garden Original Soundtrack - Courage Violins and marimbas galore--must be a different kind of courage! The courage to take another martini at the bar, perhaps. Snarkiness aside, it's a very attractive song with some great keyboard work to accompany the fiddling.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 (Game Rip) - Galaxy Trooper The first entrant in this week's Tycoon-Off is a BSC refugee, where it narrowly lost. I haven't listened to it much since then, so this is a rediscovery of sorts--it's quite good, with some real drive, decent guitar work, and a spacey melody that's pitch-perfect. Not a big fan of the moments where things verge close to disco or trance, but otherwise it's got a lot going for it.

S4 League Original Sound Track - Vivace - SuperSonic The MC and rapper in this song are utterly hilarious. I'm not sure if it's intentional or not. A curiosity.

Shining Wind Music Collection - Five Beast Generals A big bombastic track with little flashes of Asian color to it. It's got a pleasing sound overall and moves at a decent clip.

STAR SOLDIER [Vanishing Earth] ORIGINAL & ARRANGED SOUNDTRACK - SHIVER (MISSION5) Mission 5, eh? I wonder who could have nominated that The instrumentation made me think this'd be a standard rock number, but the electronics and construction move it in a rather pleasing direction.

Technictix Remix Vol. 1 - Cell-Phone Boom Sounds like someone decided to do the phone-noise-song from a few weeks ago one better. And one better they did! The phone noises and operator are annoyances, but they're absent for most of the loop, leaving listeners with some excellent synthy fireworks. I'd pay good money to hear this with the phones ditched entirely.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Game Rip) - Cruise Control Entrant #2 in the Tycoon-Off is more jazzy and swaggery than its fellow mogul--more like a real tycoon. It's definitely got a catchy beat. But it felt like it was building to something but never quite made it, making the song something of a tease.

Another top-notch week. Keep 'em comin', fellas!

The Point Spread
Courage the Cowardly Song - 2 pts.
Galaxy Trooper (Tycoon-Off '09 WINNER)- 1 pt.
Five Best Generals - 1 pt.
Shiver Mission 5 - 1 pt.
Cell Phone Boom - 1 pt.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

If it weren't for my clear affinity for one track, I could have doled out six one-pointers and been done with it. But Courage is a breath of fresh air, Kikuta-esque even. The rest aren't in the same class.

(3 points) Garden Original Soundtrack - Courage
(1 point) Shining Wind Music Collection - Five Beast Generals
(1 point) Ecco - Songs of Time - st. gabriel's mask

Ecco - Songs of Time - st. gabriel's mask is a very solid piece of new-age ambience. The atmosphere is enrapturing, and there are some delicate, memorable melodic lines spread out here and there which add to the underwater mood. Great stuff!

I've been waiting for a long time to nominate Garden Original Soundtrack - Courage, since it comes from a relatively new release. This track is absolutely gorgeous in my opinion; the melody is charming and memorable, and the instrumentation is simply intoxicating. The piece maintains a good tempo and fluidity through the awesome developments, which in turn capitalise on the already-awesome melodies. Classic Anze stuff!

I don't really remember RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 (Game Rip) - Galaxy Trooper from the BSC---and I can see why. This one doesn't do anything for me, sadly . The melodies are cheesy and undeveloped, and the quasi-disco vibe is a tad awkward. Sorry, Crash~!

S4 League Original Sound Track - Vivace - SuperSonic is silly and fun, but definitely not something I'd classify as good music. But putting snobbish elitisms aside, this is really entertaining in an absurd kind of way! Not sure whether this'll get points...but on the whole, I enjoyed it!

Shining Wind Music Collection - Five Beast Generals doesn't pack much punch considering its ferocious title and fast tempo. Nothing engages me, and the instrumentation seems a tad clumsy. I don't know, I'm probably just pulling at straws here, but overall I don't care for it. (another sorry to whoever nom'd!)

Another spacey kind of SotW tune, whodathunkit. STAR SOLDIER [Vanishing Earth] ORIGINAL & ARRANGED SOUNDTRACK - SHIVER (MISSION5) is far less interesting than the other spacey tunes I've encountered though. [not that I'm judging it based on this classification---I'm not] I don't mind the build-up to the final melody (0:50), but damn that melody sucks. Soured the whole experience, unforunately!

Technictix Remix Vol. 1 - Cell-Phone Boom is, simply put, enjoyable. I love orion's description for this one: "synthy fireworks"---that sums it up quite well. Not catchy like I had hoped, but it's fun nonetheless.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Game Rip) - Cruise Control is a bumbling piece of sly jazz, a style I usually like. But there's not really a good melody or "quirk" factor to carry this. The final 30 seconds or so are really good, though! Overall, an average track.

sorry POINT! please forgive me

3 points: Garden Original Soundtrack - Courage
2 points: Ecco - Songs of Time - st. gabriel's mask
1 point: S4 League Original Sound Track - Vivace - SuperSonic
4th: Technictix Remix Vol. 1 - Cell-Phone Boom
5th: Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Game Rip) - Cruise Control
6th: STAR SOLDIER [Vanishing Earth] ORIGINAL & ARRANGED SOUNDTRACK - SHIVER (MISSION5)
7th: Shining Wind Music Collection - Five Beast Generals
8th: RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 (Game Rip) - Galaxy Trooper

Pretty bad week, IMO. Though I guess when I think about it, I liked 4 of them so that's not too bad. But I think the bad of the bad outweighed the good of the good! (I'm annoyed I couldn't squeeze in a point for Technictix)

Not an objection per se, but we've had an awful lot of Hülsbeck lately and two of his Turritunes have placed already. If this flies I'm definitely rethinking my Nobuo Uematsu nomination.

Nomination #13

Composer: Yuriko Nakamura
Album Title: Schrödinger's Cat - Die Katze von Schrödinger Game Soundtrack
Track Title: MU ~Crisis in the Ancient City~ [Crisis]
Track Number: 4
Year: 1996
Catalog Number: SRCL-3682
Additional Information: Not so much a crisis track as a huge wham of fun jazz rock. I've had it stuck in my head for days, so I thought I'd nominate it! (Albums that have had a gold winner before are allowed to be nominated again, right..?)

Edit: About the Hülsbeck nomination; I hate to be indecisive, but I don't really care one way or the other. One side of the argument is the possibility of this becoming a regular thing (Hülsbeck noms); the other side is that it's been a while since we've had one. *shrug*

I think an album can have 3 winners (regardless of placement) before they are disqualified.

I could also care less about whether or not it is allowed. I really haven't heard enough of the composer to make a firm decision, even if he does seem to win a lot.

As for my nomination...

Composer: Yasuhisa Watanabe
Arranger: Ayako Saso
Album: Technictix Remix Vol. 2
Track Title: shake marinade dance
Track Number: 8
Year: 2008
Catalog Number: SRIN-1049
Additional Information: By the time this nomination comes up, the 3 month limit for albums will have passed.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Re. Hülsbeck: come on now, people. My feelings about banning a composer aside, four weeks was agreed upon (starting from my post and going down) as an acceptable period between Hülsbeck noms, in that two people said it was okay and no one else apparently felt like disagreeing. Last one was Week 150, easily past the four week mark. I am okay with this.

To be honest, I am more concerned about ZiggyGo's nomination. Not because of the 3 months thing, but because it's a synth/guitar arrangement of Tetsuo Kato's theme from Fighting Layer. Specifically, that worries me because a synth/guitar arrangement of Tetsuo Kato's theme from Fighting Layer took gold in week 145. They definitely are different–different solos, intros, synth passages, etc.–but when you get down to it, they're still basically guitar playing the same melody.

Here are both tracks, if anyone wants to compare:

Get the Flash Player to play this audio file: Tetsuo Kato (Fighting Layer Arrange Version) [Week 145 winner]
Get the Flash Player to play this audio file: KA-10 [ZiggyGo's potential nom]

If there is a problem, I can always change the nomination. No biggie. I didn't even realize it when I nominated.

Actually, I've decided to change it since we don't really need two arrangements of the same song. Same album though. Hopefully not as controversial.

Ridiculously good week. I remember Galaxy Trooper from a previous BSC... I think I liked it. In a week as consistent as this though, it, and every other track this week, just barely missed the mark. Great job everybody!

The two stars this week though were SHIVER (MISSION5) and Cruise Control, and while they were the easy top 2, neither held an advantage over the other, despite everything going for the Star Soldier track (shooter theme, Shimakura theme, Stage 5 theme, goddamn how have I not heard this before). In most other weeks, both of these tunes would easily be worth 3 points.

Next nom:

Artist: Kazuko Umino
Album: ~Welcome to Karu Land~ PUZZLE BOBBLE - GEKIRINDAN etc.
Track: REVOLUTION (BGM 2 - A.D.1942)
Track #: 04

Catalog #: PCCB-00196

I'd like to nominate a song from Diddy Kong Racing, the menu theme to be precise, the problem is that i downloaded the song from galbadia hotel some time ago and i don't know if it is from some official OST or ripped, it isn't listen on the two CDs i found on VGMdb though, i suspect that it is ripped. I'll upload the file as it is.
