Tales of Hearts - 2D Tales returns

Namco Bandai showed this off the other day, and a trailer's finally popped up. Bask in the character names that are so bad they're almost good (Shing Meteoryte, fuck yeah), as well as the awesome return of sprites and 2D battles. The non-battle sprites are kind of meh, though. Reminds me of Xenosaga I & II's sprites.

Here are some shitty screencaps I took of the already low-res youtube video.

YouTube Video

Here's the video on the official site. Haven't watched it yet, but I can assume the video quality is much better.

Looks good! Considering they got it right with Tales of Innocence, I'm feeling confident that this will turn out pretty good.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

It has a solid team behind it at least.

Probably won't come to US shores anyhow, but it looks fun.

Funny that just by looking at the battles I knew there had to be Team Destiny behind it at some point and the staff list kind of confirmed that for me.

I hear it's supposed to be a 2gbit cart, and you can choose between the CG or anime for cutscenes.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Some clearer screenshots.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Wow, I hope this game comes to the U.S. What makes you think that it won't? Besides the fact that none of the other DS Tales games have come our way...

Looks nice, but eh, it's most likely not coming out here so I'm not too excited and all.

I'm more interested in the upcoming Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 which has a far better chance of getting localized. I should make a thread about it but I don't think it's as popular as the main games. There's pics in my journal though if you want to see.

I was speaking idiomatically.

The only thing good Radiant Mythology's got going for it right now is that Veigue, Tales of Rebirth's protagonist, is in it.

But yeah, I'd encourage you to make a thread anyway. Who cares if it doesn't get as many posts as the Final Fantasy XII thread?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Eh what? I'm more excited with the fact that there's going to be 50 (or more) characters in it. The first game is quite fun for a dungeon crawler.

Meh, I guess I can make a thread for it and see how it goes.

Tales of Hearts: screenshots & producer's description
Quote:
According to a Famitsu interview, producer Hideo Baba says that “Hearts” was chosen for the title because of its themes of interpersonal connections that go beyond communication and stretch more deeply into feeling and emotion. It also ties in the courage he feels the characters show and his own personal desire to commemorate the past…in whatever way. The much-discussed switches from traditional sprites in the regular game to realistic models in the videos represents his wanting to express both the old and the new in the same game.

I think the title sounds a tad silly, but anyway, there hasn't been any updates here in a while. I just wanted to pop in and say that the game apparently has two editions: one with...anime cutscenes and the other has...CG cutscenes. Proof is here and here. Which would you pick?

I think I'd go with the anime one if I ever purchased it (which I won't cause it's probably never coming out here). I can't imagine a Tales game in CG to be honest. Leave that to S-E, haha.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

So I guess they really couldn't fit both Anime and CG on the same cart as originally intended.

CG would be a change of pace but would also feel out of place for Tales...

EDIT: 6650yen... wow.

Seems pre-ordering the CG edition nets you a "visual and soundtrack" dvd while pre-ordering the anime edition just gets you a "dramatic" DVD

Or so Amazon says!

How ya doing, buddy?

Has there been any news of a U.S. release yet? I'd really like at least one of the Tales games on the DS to come our way.

I thing this would be freaking awesome if this hit America.

But something about Tales and CG just doesn't seem right...I mean Tales has always had that anime flair about it, even Tales of Legendia/The Abyss even though there were the 3D parts, you could still feel the anime feel

This game, along with Suikoden Tierkreis, got leaked early.

The battle system is a modified form of Destiny 2's, where you have a stamina system to curb how much you can act before you need to back off and rest. However, unlike Destiny 2, there is no clear end to an attack chain nor a pause in between attacks and tech/arte usage, so you can go fucking apeshit on enemies without much fear of reprisal. I wonder if they have something to discourage that, since it seems like it'd be pretty easy to abuse (and this is coming from someone who still only has one tech/arte).

Not very far into the story. Shing Meteoryte, who still has the dumbest name ever, is dicking around for the first few minutes, but then stumbles upon Kohaku and Hisei washed up by his house. Blah blah blah, they come to a shrine, get what will eventually be Kohaku's weapon, baddie appears, etc.

The graphics are fine. The 3D backgrounds are a little ho-hum, but are pretty colorful. The field sprites are terrible, however, as they have that awkward Xenosaga I & II look to them. The monster sprites on the field look even worse and seem to be pretty vague on the field map before seeing them in battle. Cringe worthy stuff in some cases. Battle sprites, however, are very good. Monster designs are pretty standard fare, but they look interesting enough. The quality and detail of the character sprites are probably between Eternia and Destiny 2-- good, but the animations are a little choppier than the PS2 iterations.
