OpenOffice and the Internet
So, I installed OpenOffice onto the family computer because mine was temporarily out of commission. (moving)
Apparently however, it manages to block off all internet access. After uninstalling it, the internet worked just fine. The computer is on a wireless connection. Can anyone explain this? Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
I blame Coincidence. I've installed OO on over 70 machines (including at least 8 laptops), Windows and Linux, and never had that issue.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
More than likely is was the result of OpenOffice running out of system resources simply by attempting to open a single document. As a result your computer reached out to every connected network device (routers, printers, the XBox) hoping to find free CPU cycles and free memory SOMEWHERE in attempt to handle the tremendous bloat that is OpenOffice.org. In doing so, no doubt it crashed your router in the process and broke your interweb.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Are you on a wireless network, if so can you view other computers and access network drives? Does the internet stop working while openoffice is open, closed or both? Most amazing jew boots |
I strongly doubt that proper installation or usage of OpenOffice would interfere in any kind or way with your internet connection. That's almost like saying your new living room is preventing the TV from working.
I'm almost certain that there are other things to blame. Most amazing jew boots |
These were the some of the same thoughts that I had.
Here are more details: -OO was not running at the time of attempted internet access. -Actually, the problem was that the router (Linksys WRT54G) would not assign an IP to the computer. Therefore, it could not access anything on the network. System resources are not a problem. There is 1 gig of RAm in there. -I never attempted to access the internet when OO was open, so I cannot say for sure if that might have affected it. All i know is that the router would assign an IP address to the computer when OO was not on the machine. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
That Model is flaky as hell (I have one too). It goes in and out on me. The fact that it "coincided" with OO was nothing more than a coincidence.
How ya doing, buddy? |
What would you say if this situation were recreated multiple times, thus exhibiting that it is more than mere coincidence?

So Open office seems to be stopping your IP address from being configured?
Have you tried going to command prompt and typing in ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew? Jam it back in, in the dark. |

Actually, I even assigned an unused IP address, subnet mask, the gateway address, and correct DNS addresses, but to no avail. The Windows notifiers even said that connection to the network was established. However, no usable connection was made(i.e. access to the other computer, mine, on the network, was not possible, as well as internet access) How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
