I'll get things moving on waiting period stuff hopefully tomorrow. Been too busy to handle it or much of anything else. For now, more game boy advance:
  • Artist(s): Ryoji Yoshitomi
  • Album/Game Title: Wario Land 4 (Game Rip)
  • Track Title: Sapphire Passage - Crescent Moon Village
  • Track Number: 25
  • Year: 2001
  • Additional Information: Really weird nomination coming from me. Not expecting a whole lot from it, but Yoshitomi is my hero and the climax is amazing.
  • Source(s): Game Credits for Wario Land 4

Wandering: Well, this track has a certain Iwadare/Lunar quality to it. Great strings and piano creating a nice and tranquil tune.

Ocean: A very charming song. The latter half of the melody is pretty cool and ethereal. Excellent bassline throughout the whole thing.

Stage 1: The glacial fortress: Although having some good moments, it's still standard shmup music fare. Enjoyable, but nothing groundbreakingly new.

HIGH AND BROKEN: Sounds a bit muffled, and sort of generock. Again, nothing new for me. It's alright, but could have used a bit more spunk. Sometimes, it seems that the Japanese don't know how to rock enough.

Zone 4-1: Reminds me of Zelda music in some parts. The synthetic GBA sound is more apparent here than in Ocean. Not bad, but lacking a bit.

Amusementive Crime: What a weird name. This arrangement though is amusing, full of quirks and many good moments. Definitely, a winner.

Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall: Why does all Touhou music sound the same? A bit repetitive, but still a good listen. And ZUN is fun, always.

Wreck of the Concepcion - Credits: Well, the production is top-notch that's for sure. The song itself sounds like it's trying to emulate Monkey Island music, although in a minimalistic style. I prefer my music to be more eventful.

Point Spread
3 points: Street Fighter EX -Arrange Sound Trax- - Amusementive Crime
2 points: Kuru Kuru Kururin (Game Rip) - Ocean
1 point: Touhou Fuujinroku ~ Mountain of Faith - Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall

3 Points: Treasures of the Deep (Game Rip) - Wreck of the Concepcion - Credits
2 Points: Sonic Advance (Game Rip) - Zone 4-1
1 Point: Omega Five Soundtrack - Stage 1 The glacial fortress

"Wreck of the Concepcion" was the clear winner for me. Its mellow approach to warm, upbeat guitar is among my most favorite styles of music. I was rather shocked to find that Tallarico composed it, as his style is usually too over-the-top for me. Full points for a very pleasant surprise.
"Zone 4-1" was written by Maeda and Minobe, the team behind the infinitely awesome "Eternal Arcadia" soundtrack, so this is a no-brainer. They milked the GBA's hardware for everything they could get.
"Stage 1" intrigued me with its powerful bass and synthy leads. It kept a nice pace with some decent variations throughout. It also reminded me a bit of "Beach" from "Plok!", and I suspect that made me like it more.

Nothing else was horrible but these three stood tall above the rest.

The time of the voting is nigh.

Growlanser Generations Soundtrack - Wandering A bit tinny, but atmospheric and melodic. Some nice piano and sting lines.

Kuru Kuru Kururin (Game Rip) - Ocean Interesting melody and presentation, especially in the way the tune moved from quirky to serious and back again.

Omega Five Soundtrack - Stage 1 The glacial fortress The synth lead is by far the best part of this song. Too bad there's not more, and so much time is given over to bass hit after bass hit.

SEVEN RINGS IN HAND Sonic and the Secret Rings Original Sound Track - HIGH AND BROKEN Maybe I expect to much from a track with the "Sonic" brand, but this piece felt very unfocused and...mushy. Not a whole lot of meat.

Sonic Advance (Game Rip) - Zone 4-1 Our second Sonic track of the week is a definite improvement. Nice melody and synth usage.

Street Fighter EX -Arrange Sound Trax- - Amusementive Crime It has some strong moments offset by some weak ones. The bizarre interludes near the end of the loops are just odd.

Touhou Fuujinroku ~ Mountain of Faith - Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall Not quite sure what to make of this one. Some strengths, including a nice woodwind lead, but it never quite clicked.

Treasures of the Deep (Game Rip) - Wreck of the Concepcion - Credits I'm normally not one for Latin stuff, but this track is a charmer, with a good melody, solid production, and a certain slick charm.

Not a bad week at all!

The Point Spread
Wreck of the Conception - 3 pts.
Wandering - 2 pts.
Ocean - 1 pt.

Four tracks especially charmed me this round, so here we go. The rest wasn't bad either though, good round.

Wandering reminds me slightly of the Suikoden 1 soundtrack, and that's definitely a good thing. Nice melody and very soft mix, while having enough things going on to keep it interesting throughout. I quite like this track I have to say.

I already knew that Sonic Advance had an awesome soundtrack (it seems to have slipped by many Sonic fans for some unfathomable reason, but it really is one of my all time favorites), and Zone 4-1 doesn't disappoint. Even with the poor GBA sound quality, it stands tall above these other tracks, in my opinion.

Fall of Fall (aside from having a goofy name) is a nice track too, I always liked Touhou's original music--almost as much as I like the various doujin remixes.

And finally I got to give a point to Credits for being well-produced and having some really interesting changes.

3 points - Sonic Advance (Game Rip) - Zone 4-1
1 point - Growlanser Generations Soundtrack - Wandering
1 point - Touhou Fuujinroku ~ Mountain of Faith - Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall
1 point - Treasures of the Deep (Game Rip) - Wreck of the Concepcion - Credits

3 points: Omega Five Soundtrack - Stage 1 The glacial fortress
Not my nom, but I've been listening to this soundtrack constantly since it came out. Also, I really dug this track back when I bought the game.

2 points: SEVEN RINGS IN HAND Sonic and the Secret Rings Original Sound Track - HIGH AND BROKEN
It's ROCKIN'. Also, it's my nom. Part of the piano melody sounds like a part in "Ruined City Kishgal" from the Ys VI soundtrack.

1 point: Street Fighter EX -Arrange Sound Trax- - Amusementive Crime
Don't really care about the circus-y part, but everything else has a great mood to it. The beginning reminds me of the Chrono Trigger battle theme, but the rest reminds me of Mega Man.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I enjoyed the music this week for the most part.

<2 pts> Growlanser Generations Soundtrack - Wandering
Loved this one. Calm softy songs like this are overdone, but hey this one was actually pretty good.

<2 pts> Touhou Fuujinroku ~ Mountain of Faith - Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall
Nice cutesy piece feel good piece with a fine melody.

<1 pt> Treasures of the Deep (Game Rip) - Wreck of the Concepcion - Credits
Really tough call between giving this 2 or 1 point, but I liked the other two songs just a bit more. It's a great song though. Nice smooth soothing guitar playing here.

<1 pt> Omega Five Soundtrack - Stage 1 The glacial fortress
Having played the game, I always found the music pretty catchy. I'm always reminded of Wild Guns (another Natsume game) when I hear this.

There were so many fast-paced songs this week, I had to separate them with low tempo non-SotW songs so that I didn't get burned out listening to a continuous stream of quick rhythm. Good week, though.

Voted Songs

3pts - Growlanser Generations Soundtrack - Wandering
Simple yet wonderfully calming flute & string melody, with a mellow piano backing. The bass that comes in adds in a nice smooth beat. Love how it ends with the piano getting its own soft solo.

2pts - Touhou Fuujinroku ~ Mountain of Faith - Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall
Very fun piece. The melody has played many times by the end, but it surprisingly doesn't get too old. This is probably due to all the little changeups throughout the piece. I love when the bright piano takes the melody from the pan flute, the fact that instrument parts react to one another, and how the song lets the melody stand alone for short breaks.

1pt - Treasures of the Deep (Game Rip) - Wreck of the Concepcion - Credits
Great folk/ethnic vibe, gotta love the exotic acoustic percussion. Nice guitar "improv" break from the main melody. But I give it 3rd instead of higher because the ending seems unresolved.

Non-Voted Songs

Kuru Kuru Kururin (Game Rip) - Ocean
Okay. Did not like samples at all, backing parts tend to be repetitive

Omega Five Soundtrack - Stage 1 The glacial fortress
Energetic drive, quality production, nice bass line and "improv" section, pleasantly howling synths on top of thick well-layered background. However, the soundtrack was just released and was just featured on #gamemp3s. Personally, I don't think this is obscure enough to get my vote.

SEVEN RINGS IN HAND Sonic and the Secret Rings Original Sound Track - HIGH AND BROKEN
Nice driving guitars and solo, enjoyable string melody, production seems a little too thick, both the koto and piano sound unpleasant as a stark contrast to the rest of the mix, is something out of tune?

Sonic Advance (Game Rip) - Zone 4-1

Into, while nice at first, repeats throughout the entire song. Nice mellow lead, with drums and bass that don't get boring, song sounds very carefree. Obviously, production is not high. Not a lot of content, loops after about a minute.

Street Fighter EX -Arrange Sound Trax- - Amusementive Crime
Energetic rhythm, LOLWTF at the interludes, is surprisingly unable to hold my interest for long. Seems pretty repetitive, aside from the guitar solo in the middle of the song.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Voting wasn't easy; many good tracks this week.

(2 points) SEVEN RINGS IN HAND Sonic and the Secret Rings Original Sound Track - HIGH AND BROKEN

(2 points) Treasures of the Deep (Game Rip) - Wreck of the Concepcion - Credits

(1 point) Growlanser Generations Soundtrack - Wandering

(1 point) Omega Five Soundtrack - Stage 1 The glacial fortress

Touhou, Street Fighter and Sonic Advance were very, very close to getting points. Kuru Kuru is actually quite charming but has the misfortune of being nominated in a strong week.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
I think therefore I am... I think.

Don't close! Will edit with points. Meant to vote earlier but got tied up with something.

EDIT: Here's my point spread.

3 pts. - Wreck of the Concepcion / Credits
2 pts. - Zone 4-1
1 pt. - Ocean

Close - Wandering

Wreck of the Concepcion was a nice surprise. Maybe I just haven't listened to enough Tallarico, but I didn't expect something like this. I definitely have to check out the rest of this game's music.

Pretty good week, especially after last week. Nice job, guys.

Though I don't understand why we need to hear so many ZUN songs. I think we know what they sound like by now.
