I recently started playing chess again and forgot how much I adore it. I love the game; I think it's the greatest board game ever created. Nothing is left to chance and good games are nothing but intellect vs. intellect. I have no desire to study the game, though. Learn the psychology behind various strategies and the 'best' kinds of opening moves, etc. I just like to play a game at a time and see what I can do.

Who else is a chess player? Are you good? I used to think I was a great player until I started playing others online. If I'm playing someone in person I greatly dislike talking. I like to focus on every move and if the opponent is blabbin' away about The Hottie and the Nottie I can't very well yell CHECK, now can I?

Anyway. It sounds geeky but there's a lot of drama involved in planning moves and series of sacrifices. The balance of the game can be tipped with the capture of a single piece sometimes.

Yes, I play chess. I have since I was 4. I love it. Chess and poker eat up a ridiculous amount of my time. You want to play some high level chess? Go play the old men in any given park of any given major city. Those cats can play.

Yes, I play chess. Been playing since I was 7. Won a couple local tournaments when I was 12 and 13. I haven't played recently and am not very good. If I have time and are playing against someone who is equally as good, or a bit better, I enjoy playing.

Well, it's true. But put that way yeah that is ironic. I'd probably get a lot out of such texts.

I play Chess, but just for leisure with my family and friends. I'm alright in the game... Nothing stellar. Haven't played in a long while though...

I mostly think about the game in the way you do. Beyond the basics, I prefer not to think of it in terms of Knight's Opening, or Kasparov's Gambit, or Willie Nelson's Flamjammery. I leave the technicalities to the experts, and I just play.

I'm pretty good at seeing the bigger picture, so I can usually see my opponent's strategy forming as he plays, but I've never really been able to think of my own gameplan more than a few steps ahead because of my poor memory.

I can't stand chess.

I've always enjoyed games that introduce a bit of luck into them, since then you have to be able to react to unexpected events a lot more often than you would in chess where all the information is known to every player. It could also be that I generally like to enjoy playing my games and having decent conversation during them and not just sit there trying to stare the other person down while they're making their move.

I played chess dedicatedly until I was twelve, when I moved to a school where - inexplicably - nobody knew how to play. I walked into my dorm on one of my first days there and saw people treating every piece as a pawn, because "it made things simpler".

I can probably count the number of games I've had since then on one hand.

I play chess. Been playing since I was 6. As a child, I was a good player for my age, peaking at 2nd place in under 12 years old national championship. Since then I didn't make much progress. The last time I've played in national championship, it was under 16 years old, and I've finished 7th. Since then I've quit competitive chess, and only been playing for my club's B-team in the league. My ELO is 2148.

As a matter of a fact, this morning I've won a game. We were playing against the team that was in the lead, and we've won 3.5:0.5. Feels great!

I like chess too. Was never very good at it. Managed to bluff my way into the school team though. So what are some of your favourite openings? Mine's the Sicilian Najdorf (Sometimes i try my luck with Sicilian Dragon) and QGD, Slav defense (For Black) and 1) e4 (for White) is my favourite starting move

Me and my brother always played chess when we were younger. It was Qube's favorite game. Back then, I didn't really like it much because I always lost. But as I got older and played with more people, I managed to learn a few things. Qube would never tell me what I did wrong because he didn't want to ever not win against me. However, other people I played with always told me where my mistakes were. Most of them being lack of patience.

Now when I play chess, I tend to play at a pretty competent level. I can hold my own against very skilled players, and completely bash those that are new to the game =P.

For those that think chess is boring, I challenge you to research the strategy aspect of it. Once you start playing to have a good strategy, instead of playing to win, it gets alot more interesting.

I LOVE chess, but I can't play it very well. I think I'm the best among my close friends, but that honestly isn't sayin' a whole lot. I'm pretty impatient, and don't really think through the moves very much.

During the end of the game, I do tend to get bored though. Usually it's one person trying to corner the King, and the other player moving the King =/

I play, but I always lose. I have to think back to 6th grade or so to recall a game that I actually won, without it being a practice game. I'm always trying to teach other people (family members, mostly) how to play; they either forget immediately or promptly beat me.

One thing I'm not fond of is chess snobbery. I dislike seeing games reduced to a series of mathematical equations, even if that's what they really are, and talking about grandmastery makes my eyes glaze over. Maybe that's why I don't play much anymore.

I used to play chess with my brother. He was in his school's team first year to college (Wanted me to be his apprentice..lol). He taught me most of the stuff I knew. I enjoyed the puzzles more than the games though. I was never really strong on the logic and strategy, so I never really got hat far. I usually fall asleep mid-game.
I remember that movie.. "Searching for Bobby Fischer"..really liked that movie.

Chess is a lot of fun. Back when there was no internet and time-consuming videogames, I used to play it a lot. During high-school and during summer vacation with my cousins. Lately, a co-worker and I used to play it during our lunch time, we even had a tally board just to check how many wins and losses each other had. It's a great game to pass time, and it's really good to see your plans going into place and winning the game according to how you predicted the other player's moves.

Plus, it makes you look 30% smarter to the ladies.

My fiancee just owned me at Chess earlier this evening. It was fun. I usually beat her; hubris was my downfall. Lack of caution.

My own skill depends on my state of mind going into the game, pretty much. If I am able to and interested in focusingon the game, I'm pretty good. Not tournament-winning material by any means, but I can hold my own. If I'm at all distracted or impatient, I get my face handed to me on a silver platter.

I actually enjoy playing chess, but I'm not a great player in any way. I use to play competitive chess when I was in elementary school but thats about it.

I use to play a lot of casaul chess quite a lot in college, me and this older gentleman, use to play chess in the food court all the time. He taught me a lot of things, but I could never beat him, but some of the matches were pretty good. I'll definetely play chess if anybody is up for it, but don't really expect much of a challenge from me.

I love chess and played competitvely through to high school. Since then I've only played a handful of times a year. I'd definitely like to play over the board more often. Internet chess, such as on yahoo games, is fun for a while but people tend to play the same opening or the same moves.

Favourite style of chess would be bughouse (four players simultaneous, teams of two, swapping captured pieces), closely followed by blitz. I love playing 5 minute games - even if you lose a piece you keep going and hope your opponent makes a bigger mistake. Momentum and concentration is really important.

I try to play the occasional game against anyone I can find - at uni, at the park / public square, friends, acquaintances, etc. When I see two people playing chess in public I can't help but stop to watch. Grandmaster games such as the ones by Capablanca, Morphy, Tal, Nimzowitsch can be especially artistic IMO. The sequence of moves that develop tactical and positional advantages, the unexpected sacrifice, the clever use of zugzwang and an aethestically-pleasing final position makes me consider great games of chess similar to a piece of artwork.

I've always wanted to learn how to play properly. When I was a kid I used to use the pieces to parade around the board, which shows how much I knew about the rules of chess. I do have an uncle who can have a completely involving conversation and still win a chess game against a hard opponent. I wish I had that talent.

I've been playing chess(or at least trying) since I could read and write. I'd like to say that I am a fairly competent player, but I lack much experience because of the town I live in. Not many willing participants that I could nurture my technique with, and finding suitable and intellectually stern people online is quite hard. I haven't played in years and it quite saddens me because chess is the number one board game for me, followed by scrabble/literati. I quite enjoy the strategy aspect of the game, though I do not have one of those concrete and used-every-single-time strategies. I love to make them up as I go. I would enjoy if GFF had some sort of chess contest to be held occasionally throughout the year.

I'm not very good at it to be honest. I'm very good when it comes to strategy, but when it comes to Chess, i'm horrible at. I don't know why, perhaps it's because I either analyze my moves too much, or analyze my opponents? It's really a brainteaser that I cba to partake in.
