Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD

Looks like Capcom are finally going to release another Xbox Live Arcade game. This time it's going to be Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Before anyone complains about lack of SFA3, note that they're going to be redrawing the sprites, in HD. It seems they've got artists from Udon Comics to draw it (the folks responsible for the street fighter manga). This bit's a ripper:

In a slide on display during the conference, Capcom showed character sprites from an older Street Fighter game and Guilty Gear next to the projected quality of what the company is looking to create with this HD Remix version -- which in the slide simply looked like hand drawn artwork. The point behind it all is that the company intends for the visuals to be the next step up from Guilty Gear as 2D fighting games go.

Ugh. This is Puzzle Fighter we're talking about. Which I'd take over SFA3 any day.

Nah, the puzzle fighter game is another game they're releasing..

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I just noticed that when I doubled checked. Man. Capcom is all about milking Street Fighter but in a good way. Puzzle Fighter I'll get for sure. Probably both although I have to decided which version to get now. 360 or PS3 version. (Probably PS3 because the d-pad is hella better).

Puzzle Fighter will have Devilot... Gotta love her. Also, remember that after Puzzle Fighter, the next tiny step is Pocket Fighter, a superbly hilarious game.

I'm not sure if Udon will work for this. I mean I love their art, but its better suited for comics and pinups, not games... we'll see how it looks in action, animated.

But anyway, what they need to do is redo Vampire Savior (a.k.a. Darkstalkers 3) in HD. Morrigan has been using her 1994 sprite since decades by now, and Darkstalkers is one series where Udon nailed the absolutely perfect art style.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I guess after people seeing Guilty Gear, this was the next logical step for street fighter since they made a pretty big fuck up of the 3D games, and their last game Fighting Jam... I've seen better character rosters on fanboy mugen games! Does this mean Capcom vs Sammy could still be on the cards though I wonder...

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I was really excited about this until I saw the HD slide. Urgh, why Udon? They are mostly talentless hacks. Bengus, Akiman and Edayan, where are you? ;_;

I guess it's better than nothing, which is what Capcom was promising us before... But I'm going to be cautiously pessimistic until I see some evidence that this isn't gonna be shoddy.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

That slide that was shown is mentioned in the article I linked. They said that it was just an impression, so I'm guessing the final product will look quite different. I'm not sure though.

Wow. I'm very interested in this. I'm very happy to hear that they want to keep a great 2D style. UDON sprites are going to be great. I wonder if they're going to keep the trend of 2D characters imposed on 3D backgrounds?

How ya doing, buddy?

I love the Udon work.

My ponder is this: We know the sprites will look amazing and high res. But how about the animation? Will it be appropriately fluid? For a game that was only just recently started, will be download only, and that will be in 1080-freakin-p, I can't imagine they will actually have the frames of animation to make it all very fluid as they'll have to draw every single one. Which will make it look odd and jerky, like old Mortal Kombat in the arcades.

Obviously, I'm hoping to god I'm wrong.

Also, aside from the animation (very important point), I also hope they chose to update the system a bit. I mean, sure, I loved SSF2T, but the controls will feel a little dated compared to the newer Street Fighters. With any luck, online play won't just be a cheap-fest!

Udon hired a bunch of shitty artists about a month before this was announced and I can only assume it's for this project, so they'll have plenty of people to trace lines. I really, really hope they don't do the 3D background stuff. That would be even more terrible than I imagined.

According to the article in the first post, the game is "pixel for pixel" the same as the original. SSF2T is in my opinion the first well-balanced SF2 game, so that may not be a bad thing.

As long as there are lots of people to play online with and there's not too much lag, then I'll be grabbing this for sure (once I get Puzzle Fighter first)

To be fair the game so far has only been shown being played on the 360. So if the case was the same here then it's no wonder they sucked when your only gameplay choices are either an analog stick or a 1piece D-pad. I know that I would suck using either of thoes too. ^^;

Maybe I misunderstood you, but I'm sure there's a Hori Fighting Stick for the 360. That should fix the problem quite nicely.

For those of us who don't have the mammoth brain required to follow Slayer's labelling logic...

Danger Zone = Guile Stage (I get the joke but I think people would just rather know what stage it is)
China = Ryu Stage (THIS IS JAPAN YOU IDIOT :GONK
Tie-breaker and Rivals are both on Vega Stage

Also, Slayer, way to bash the 360's controller out of nowhere. Maybe next time you should consider that there are arcade sticks for the 360.

As for the game itself, I have to admit I'm disappointed. Maybe my own expectations were too high, but I was expecting it to look a lot smoother and especially a lot BETTER. Those sprites just look a little too steroid-y for my tastes.

Also, why is Ryu labelled with Hadoken and Ken labelled with Shoryuken? Is there some "bonus move" feature I'm unaware of or are they assuming we're too dumb to know who's who?

And lastly, Slayer, your last Youtube link is linking to the youtube front page.

Agreed. The animation when they're just standing around and when they're backing up are particularly jarring. The muscles on Ryu and Ken looked very weird as well.

@Soluzar
That's true but the game would have been in a demo Kiosk so whatever system it was on, you wouldn't be able to use your own controller at that time.

@Mo0
Thoes arn't my titles, thoes are the ones that Gametrailers gave the videos and therefore is the name of the page (and therefore also the link). It's not my fault, I just posted the links.

Also if people had read the mission statement going into SF2 HD you would have known that they wern't going to be changing moves, frames or balance. Therefore the animation CAN NOT be touched in order to maintain all thoes things that they promised fans that they wouldn't touch. SF2 HD is made for all thoes who still practice today for tournaments such as EVO. Where SF4 is for the casual and new fans of the series. So if you're disapointed that's one thing, but if you're surprised (due to these videos) then we all knew this about the game from day 1.

Also I wasn't trying to bash the controller. If you play fighting games enough to know what I'm talking about then you KNOW what I'm talking about. Obviously Mo0 doesn't know the general fighting game enthusiast's view on 1piece D-pads and analog sticks.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

David Sirlin said he had mainly been playing with one of the two Hori Arcade sticks for the 360. But the guy playing as Ryu more than likely had a 360 controller, though I'm surprised he wasn't jumping more often when trying to execute a Hadouken rather than doing crouching fierce. Either way, fucking hell Ryu is the truth, not Ken.
