Damn Blu-Ray, making things look nicer

So over the past few years I've made a pretty nice DVD collection.

My question is whether or not I will need to upgrade my films to blu-ray. I know that the jump from VHS to DVD was pretty good, but nothing like HD.

They probably need to use newer tech, high quality cameras to achieve that sort of detail.
That would mean that a lot of the older movies won't be coming out on Blu-ray then, correct?
So I wont need to reburn a bunch of movies, to have them higher quality. I hope


I know it's not a question of if I have to or not, but I'm a perfectionist with this stuff, so to me, it matters.

If my explaining sucks, heres an example. Will they come out with The back to future box set on high def blu ray disc. or anything dated like pre 2000

Uhh, okay, if you have a lot of money, you could possibly "upgrade" your collection. Blu-Ray discs are still quite expensive, I guess. Also, quite a lot of the "older movies" are in fact available on Blu-Ray already, like Bullitt for example. In a couple of years, you will be able to manually upgrade your old DVDs to Blu-Ray DVDs anyway, so let's wait and have a cup of shampoo

Upgrading won't cost much at all, my friend, and i would probably be doing this in a year or two, when prices are more reasonable.

400+, but I usually make copies of DVD's, so I only really pay for my blank media and netflix service.

It depends on your tv and audio system as to whether you would really benefit enough from an upgrade to justify a complete replacement. Also, Blade Runner is nearly as old as I am and it looks phenomenal on blu-ray.

But you just said that you basically burn all of your movies, so I guess the cost will mainly be in a burner and media, so uh, in a year or so when all of that stuff is reasonably priced, go for it. Why are you even asking, shit.

You do realize that the potential resolution of film goes way beyond 1080p, right.

And I consider the jump from VHS to DVD to be bigger than HD. The DVD format is still practical for sufficient storage and quality, while VHS is not. And while HD is a massive upgrade from DVD, it is still a luxury item due to the ratio between its pricing and perceived benefit.

No offence, but I recommend coping with your OCD first. The way you phrase the question ('I hope I won't have to upgrade') is alarming. How often do you even watch your 400 DVDs? And when you watch them, do you actually go DAMN SON, MY VIEWING EXPERIENCE HERE WOULD SURELY BE IMPROVED WITH SOME HI-DEF UPGRADEZ? Your perfectionism is pretty misdirected. The quality of movies will always keep improving. Will you upgrade your whole collection every time? Why? So that someone could put ''he left some damn fine hi-def movies behind'' in your obituary?

I'm never going to upgrade my collection. I already wasted too much money switching from VHS to DVD with my whole anime collection. Not saying I won't get a blue ray player, but I'm not rebuying stuff I already have

I wouldn't make this a retro-action thing. If you decide to get a Blu-Ray player or PS3 if you don't have one already, then start going Blu-Ray forward. I wouldn't go back and retrofit your current collection though, unless there's a movie you really wanna see in HD.

I would upgrade but only on a few movies from my DVD's. Certain ones that are filled with visual effects like Lord of The Rings and say...Star Wars would definitely be worth the upgrade. But other things I wouldn't even think about

I think HD is typically worth the five dollars more you'll usually pay for a new movie, guys. It's not like Blu-Ray movies cost double what a new dvd costs or anything and it's *usually* a significant improvement. I usually check places like highdefdigest to make sure the quality difference justifies the cost. (and if not, I usually won't buy either version, lawl)

Actually...most places I've seen have had DVD's at about 15-20 and Blu-Ray from 30 to 40...

If those movies don't look shitty, I'll probably only upgrade the big ones (like what slash said, great idea, especially for the lazy man with OCD)

I can't wait to see the matrix in HD. I'll get up and close and personal with Lawrence Fishbournes Face Craters like I did in Imax, years back.

I have a panasonic DVD recorder (connected via component) And it looks pretty nice when I was watching fearless on it the other day

Normal DVDs look fine. Compressed ones look pretty bad depending on how compressed they need to be. They're still watchable, though. Unless you're Megalith.

For me, I don't plan on upgrading my entire collection but rather some films that I really want in HD. My favorite movies or movies I watch often I will upgrade, but not all of them.

I did stop buying DVD's though, only buying Blu-Ray's now.

You'll be watching the same movies that were before, but with more pixels. Granted, it will look pretty slick, but sticking with your regular DVDs will not curve your spine and grow hair on your hands.

I think for some DVD's/Blu-Ray Movies...thats true. for others, I don't think it is as true

Examples being Spider-Man and Pirates of the Caribbean...

You also need to realize that we people at GFF can detect the smallest flaws...just ask the people in the audio area.

It ultimately depends on your preference. I always felt the VHS to DVD jump was huge. I have yet to see anything Blu-Ray though so it's hard for me to imagine THAT much of a difference again.

However, even with such a jump, I would highly advise waiting until it becomes a reasonable price. I remember my 'rents telling me how they would NEVER get a DVD player and would just keep buying, even storing up VHS players and getting the tapes. This was furthered when the one time they got a DVD player, it didn't install easily. However, a few years later, with installations easy as pie, DVD and DVD players cheap as anything, my 'rents have not only gone straight to DVD but converted their VHS to DVDs.

Despite the difficult of installation, it was the drop in prices that got my parents to go the DVD route. Even now they tell me the good deals they get. And even now they are telling me they will stay with only DVDs...until Blu Ray Players and Discs drop in price. And if history has proven anything (CD burners, DVD burners, DVD players, etc) that is exactly what will happen.
