Max Payne

The trailer for the movie is out on YouTube. You can watch it in the link below...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JboQmDIdKWs

Coming together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a DEA agent (Wahlberg) whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin (Kunis) out to avenge her sister's death. The duo will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.

Directed by John Moore, the film is released October 2008.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
Kiss me goodbye, love's mystery
All of my life I'll hold you close to me
Don't shed a tear for love's mortality
For you put the dream in my reality

I'm really not sure what to make of this one. From the trailer the look and feel actually might come out alright. But the complete cutting of the characters Vladmir Lem and Alfred Woden make really wonder what sort of plot alterations they're making. I always figured it for either needing to be excessively long or busy to a fault to fit all the game plot in but at the very least Woden seem required to keep the whole norse mythology vein going. And that'd be a crying shame to lose

And Ludacris as Jim Bravura? What in the name of fuck is that about?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
Lady, I was gonna cut you some slack, cause you're a major mythological figure but now you've just gone nuts!

Wow, phew, I'm glad you didn't say "Directed by Uwe Boll". Thank God.

John Moore isn't exactly up-to-snuff himself.

Behind Enemy Lines was shit and the Omen remake (which I refused to watch for a number of reasons) came and went like a John in a Vietnamese whore house.

lol... Thank God for that

Still, I think that Moore is some steps higher than Boll... Omen was a decent one, and Behind Enemy Lines wasn't a bad movie either IMO. Finger's crossed he didn't screw this one up then...

I only ever played through the first half of the first Max Payne game and thoroughly enjoyed it, however circumstances lead to me never beating it. When the second game dropped and the physics were hyped up, I went out immediately and bought a copy for the PC. The gritty storyline mixed with intense gun-play and an incredible soundtrack made Max Payne 2 one of my favorite games, and to be honest this trailer gives quite a bit of hope that this film won't suck and may even stay true to the game in some aspects.

HOWEVER, what the fuck do these Demon's (Gargoyles, whatever) have to do with anything? Unless they're apart of a dream sequence from the first game that I never saw, I'm completely confused; looked as if they're apart of the actual plot and not just a dream sequence judging by how many times I saw them in the trailer.

No it wasn't. You can't improve on a Richard Donner movie.

They probably just didn't show them in the trailer. Strahd mentioned Max being a DEA agent, so it looks like it's got the plot of the first game. The explosion at the tower with the helicopter nearby makes me think of the final levels of the first game, in the Aesir Corporation building.

I don't know where Ludacris fits in, but I get the feeling he's not going to be Bravura. Totally wouldn't fit the part. I'm thinking the guy at 0:44 in the trailer is supposed to be Bravura.

Hard telling how accurate the imdb page is for it but according to it Ludacris is playing Bravura and Vinnie ,Vlad, and Alfred Woden are not even cast. And some fellow named Jason Colvin who was in neither of the games has been added in. It does seem to keep the basic plot of the first game from what little I can decipher but it looks like various elements are being trimmed out for simplicity. Not a crime really but still not ideal. I could see losing vinnie and vlad as their chunks of the game just mechanisms to deliver information and pad out the play time. Woden on the other hand seems odd to cut.

I'll say this for Mila Kunis, she really looks the role in the quick clip they show of her in the elevator.

It seems pretty evident to me that they're part of Max's hallucinations. The first game had the old inner circle crone trying to OD max on Valkyr, so I'm sure something like that will come up in the movie. From a script standpoint it's almost too perfect to throw out in the movie version. She attempts to kill him with the same thing that killed his family, but instead of killing him, it adds fuel to the fire.

I'm really interested in seeing how it turns out. The trailer has me hopeful that it will be the first video game movie that actually makes an impact in the industry.

And I was skeptical about Mark Wahlberg at first, but seeing him in movies like We Own the Night has given me some optmism.

My only hope, really, is that they keep the same mood in the soundtrack that they have in the trailer. A barebones distorted guitar soundtrack a la Godspeed You! Black Emperor would be heaven.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

No it wasn't. You can't improve on a Richard Donner movie.
It was a damn near word for word remake with better special effects and heavy application of a blue filter towards the end. It didn't improve on the original, no, but it wasn't a bad film per se. If someone had never seen the original I'm sure they'd enjoy it just fine. I know that most horror film remakes are shit compared to the original but Omen was ok.

I'm with LeHah on this one. The Omen remake was terrible. Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles turn in pathetic performances, and the dialogue is awful. Mia Farrow is the only thing in that movie worth a damn. An enjoyable movie? Maybe, but you would have to have really bad taste to take it seriously.

I've never played Max Payne, but the trailer looks kinda generic. For the sake of the movie, let's hope that mr. Wahlberg's acting is better than in The Happening.

In a film where they didn't do much actual acting and spent most of the film practicing their moody glares, I think so. I guess the only way you'd ever know would be, you know, to actually watch the film rather than dismiss it out of hand because you have this weird, tenth grade film studies student opinion that films are there to be disseminated and poked at rather then watched and enjoyed. I'll bet you're one of those people who says that the Rob Zombie version of Halloween takes away all the suspense and tension of the film by revealing a bit about the character and having people actually get killed once in a while as opposed to anyone who's watched the original Halloween recently and realised that the majority of the film is Mike Myers shuffling around outside the school in broad daylight like a third rate WWE wrestler, looking more like a particularly unsubtle paedophile than a knife wielding psychopath. I'm not saying that the remake of Omen was a masterpiece, not by any stretch of the imagination but it is a decent film that brings the now-dated original up to pace. The Omen was never a really scary film and at least the remake injects a couple of shocks, even if you don't get to watch Gregory Peck looking a bit lost and constipated throughout proceedings.

Additional Spam:

LeHah admitted himself not to have seen the remake, the script is all but word for word lifted from the original and anyone who takes horror films seriously needs to reassess their priorities in life frankly. Then again, I've had a look in that horror movie thread and you've listed a lot of shit as "good" horror so I can safely ignore your opinion on the subject.

I believe a critic summed up the remake very well - "Exactly like the original, but with cell phones. So - why bother at all?"

Original screenwriter David Seltzer questioned why anyone would bother remaking the film so exactly - and this was after they payed him some giant bundles of cash.

(Anyway, this is all OT - lets move on?)

Alright, I'll give you that one. Still an ok film in my opinion though.

Aaaanyhow, back on topic, why does it matter so much to some of you kids that the film follows exactly the plot of the game? As I said when Hitman came out, a game and a film are hugely different media. If nothing else, the film will run to a couple of hours max whereas the game will take considerably longer. Granted the exposition sections probably don't amount to much time (Unless you're playing Metal Gear Cutscene of course) but the game is all about the action bits and anyway, the creators have a much longer timespan to develop the story. Also, everyone who's played the game knows the story already, why you'd be interesting in seeing the whole thing acted out exactly the same only without the interactive bits is beyond me.

Films are always based on game concepts, they're never really the film of the game because gamers already know what happens and casual viewers would probably find it dull. Let's face it, who ever plays Doom or Max Payne for the story? You play it for the shooting things, otherwise you'd jus download the cutscenes and save yourself £20. The fun of games is the interactivity so to make an interesting convertion to a passive media like film, something has to give so the story writers take the basic feel of the game, keep a few main characters as reference points and then make up the rest as they go along. A film following the plot of pretty much any computer game exactly would probably be overly long and pretty boring, that's why nobody makes them.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Max Payne had a terrific mood. And the original game was far superior in its playing with overused, overdrawn stereotypes. It was so cheesy that it hurt. The Finito Brothers. Don Punchinello. Vinni Gagniti. The Ragnaröck Club. But it WORKED. And it worked far better than the toned down, more serious second part, which also was great, but IMO lacked the massive amounts of tounge in cheek part 1 had.

And THAT'S something they hopefully bring over to the movie. Plus this "Noir York" kind of feeling.
Could actually work. Max Payne is a game that doesn't rely on gameplay alone, so there's something in there to actually make a movie of. Unlike most other games made into movies...

Well, it's a lot easier to get a film done when you go with a consistent mood. Telling the whole crew that they're filming a movie one way, but the audience is supposed to think about it in another way, is kind of a practical nightmare. I can see why they went all serious with the movie version.

And Shin, I think everyone is more or less on board with the idea of a Max Payne movie, just as long as it doesn't try to make it into Constantine 2.

On another note, MAX PAYNE: PAYNE & REDEMPTION - THE INDEPENDENT FILM .
This was going to be the indie Max Payne sequel, but apparently Fox told them to piss off like they do with all dastardly infringers on their products. The guy has decided he's still making it, but he won't be allowed to call Max Payne "Max Payne," for all the difference that will make.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
