Half Man Half Tree

Tree man 'who grew roots' may be cured - Telegraph

Quote:
An Indonesian fisherman who feared that he would be killed by tree-like growths covering his body has been given hope of recovery by an American doctor - and Vitamin A.
Quote:
The welts spread across his body unchecked and soon he was left unable to carry out everyday household tasks.
Sacked from his job and deserted by his wife, Dede has been raising his two children - now in their late teens - in poverty, resigned to the fact that local doctors had no cure for his condition.
To make ends meet he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience alongside victims of other peculiar diseases
I feel poor to the man, seriously, I never thought there is such extreme mutation which causes your skin to be hardened like a tree. This disease will turn the victim into some half-man half-tree being, don't click the news if you are not prepared.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
You all think you got good deals, huh? Ha! You frugal and observant shoppers have more to learn.

Haha.

But on a serious note, I've seen this somewhere before. I saw a video of it though. It's disgusting. Makes my skin crawl.

I wonder if his job has him draped with Christmas lights and tinsel this time of year?

There was a time as a child I was a afraid of being turned into a tree. And then someone cutting at my legs with a chainsaw.

Most horror movies (even bad ones) had this sort of effect on me back then.

I think if they made a video of someone cutting off his "branches" and then showed someone cooking and eating them I'd puke. Bad.

I don't know. It doesn't disgust me - it amazes me. I think if I could chose a way to die, it would be a quicker, painless version of this.

I've never heard of a human body being host to a tree (or tree-like growths). He seems to have leaves and everything growing out of him. To think of how the body must change to accommodate that is absolutely mind-boggling.

I guess you shouldn't eat the seeds of fruits afterall. ^_^

^^^ Yup. It's pretty incredible. I saw an article on the 'treeman' a while ago and really wasn't too repulsed by it. If anything I feel terrible for the guy who was abandoned by his wife and fired from his job and raised 2 children through all of this.

Apparently the hands are completely calcified. They aren't literally 'tree branches' but cutaneous horns. He hopefully will end up being alright with proper treatments.

It makes one wonder....what's going on on the inside of his body? Some of those warts/growths look too elaborate to just be on the surface.
Poor guy, though. I hope the cure works.

And yet, they are on the surface. His condition is caused by the same type of HPV virus that gives anyone with a normal immune system common warts. The tree-like growths in this outstanding are composed of keratin and filaggrin, the same stuff that makes up nails, hair, hooves, and horns. The warts themselves do not have 'roots' and are entirely localized in the epidermis. I imagine otherwise his condition would be very painful and life-threatening.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Yeah, I figured. Warts on the surface would only make sense.
Nonetheless, it still makes me squeamish.

wow, that's an interesting story. It's nice to know that there are people out there, like the doctor from the University, that flew to Indonesia to try to change the victim's life around. I wish there were more info on how exactly did the HPV mutated the guy's genetic makeup. I feel like I'm in microbiology class again.

Just when my tutor told me to write a report about this case last week...

I have to agree, I feel sorry for him. Especially since he had the gall to parade in a "freak show" just to get money he needed to live.
And just a few months after being ridiculed, reporters and scientists came to his place to tape his on camera. Ironic heh?

I wish there were more info on how exactly did the HPV mutated the guy's genetic makeup.
If I hadn't mistaken, the weak immune system of the man enhances the growth of the warts. Infos are available if you search with Indonesia language, but only if you understand Indonesia language^^[/QUOTE]

I saw a few articles about the earlier. I had never hard anything information about it, let it alone seen pictures like that. It's fascinating to read about, but I feel terrible for that poor man. It's great he is finally getting help and that more light can be shed on his condition. It's just crazy to look at.

It would kind of suck if he becomes into a mango tree, and sold off to some one who doesn't know it used be a person. Like what if a mango grows from it's penis and you didn't even know that the area it's growing from is the penis.

There was a time as a child I was a afraid of being turned into a tree. And then someone cutting at my legs with a chainsaw.
I got that same fear after reading Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree." I think my teacher told us "imagine if you were the tree and someone cut you down." Either that or I imagined it and it gave me nightmares.

some minor update: the man just recently through surgeon, the welts was removed after some tremendous hours, involving 4 doctors, they weight around... 5 Kg.

@lemonpop
If you are interested about this disease, you might want to google "giant cutaneous horn". Apparently the disease itself is pretty rare occured, but the victim, Dede himself has rare genes (or whatever are these, helix chain? genomes?) that make the growth became too tremendous.

I have researched this disaese a little, but I think this man's case is just too exceptional (most of the victim grew tree from their body, but not that massive).

Jam it back in, in the dark.
