If I'm going to vote I'm gonna have to do it tonight since I have to work all week, so unfortunately this isn't going to include my usual reviews. It also means I wasn't able to spend a couple days just listening to this stuff which is what I usually do. I just want to support Progear, dammit!

3 points - Storm of Progear Original Soundtrack - To the Blue Sky -Stage 1-
1 point - Maple Story (Game Rip) - Tree Dungeon
1 point - Yogurting Original Soundtrack - The Student Council is Very Busy!
1 point - Sekaiju no MeiQ Super Arrange Version - Battle - Destruction Begets Decay

Here's my nomination again since I don't see it in the nomination queue--just in case. Onward, cave shmups!

Game: PinkSweets
Song name: Sorelle Forti
Composer: MICHI"PAD-A"
Album: PinkSweets OST
Track: 7
Download here!

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I remember playing the first Boktai game and being reasonably impressed with the GBA-ey quasi-gothic music. Boktai 3 Sabata's Counterattack (Game Rip) - Solar Tree Yggdrasill carries the same sort of sound and tone to what I'm accustomed to from the series, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Doesn't really do anything to wow me though, sadly.

Legend of Game Music 2 ~Platinum Box~ - POWER DRIFT - LIKE THE WIND (B Course) has an awesome old-school feel going for it. I love the pacing and tempo, too. But that's all the good I can extract. The rest of the compositional features are either underdeveloped or not emphasised enough to warrant any interest. The melodic development is intriguing, I suppose, but on the whole the piece didn't really agree with me.

Maple Story, huh? Never heard any of this game's music before. Maple Story (Game Rip) - Tree Dungeon has a gorgeous sense of introspectiveness going for it; the thoughtful instrumentation and subtle yet effectual progressions in melodic layering really make this a sweet little ditty. Very innocuous, and as a result extremely accessible. Me lieks~

I love the Okage soundtrack! (And that game, too; I bought it and completed it sometime last year) The musical score was also surprisingly impressive, and fit the quirky locales and situations really well. Okage: Shadow King Original Soundtrack - Vampire Evil King Battle isn't what I'd call a personal favourite, although it's still a respectable attempt at Okage-esque battle music. I urge people to check this score out; quality stuff contained therein. I might nominate something in the future, too. Props to the nominator~

Sekaiju no MeiQ Super Arrange Version - Battle - Destruction Begets Decay is quality rock, there's no question. I can appreciate the technical production values and rock elements (I sense a bit of Spanish exoticism, too, quite nice). Didn't really connect with any of the melodies, although that's excusable. Solid hit of battle track rock. (+ the brass usage is ++)

Storm of Progear Original Soundtrack - To the Blue Sky -Stage 1- is another really solid track, but it doesn't do anything to wow me. I love what's going on this piece, and really wanted to be wow!ed by something. But as it stands, it's a great listen that'll probably get a point.

Oldfield, huh? Interestin' to hear what this piece is like. Tr3s Lunas - Tr3s Lunas Is interesting without being above the average. The instrumentation's nice and the song progresses very fluidly. Bundled with potential, but it doesn't really score.

Yee-haw! (<--Anybody who doesn't use that when describing this track is weird) Yogurting Original Soundtrack - The Student Council is Very Busy! is from such an amazing soundtrack; upbeat, lively Korean MMORPG compositions instantaneously agree with me, seemingly. This one one of the soundtrack's many, many highlights. The infectious, wild-west melody and typical yet satisfactory harmonica are so full of vigor and character. Major props to the nominator (Crash, I believe). I hate to compare songs, but this one's so similar to Mitsuda's "Cactus" it's insane. (This one's better though)

PO*NT T*ME

Greetings from the GFF NE Meet! Taking a break from the idiocy to get my votes in this week (I missed last week.)

3 Points: Yogurting Original Soundtrack - The Student Council is Very Busy!

I defy anyone to not tap their toes and sway a little as this song plays. Even if western music isn't your thing, there's enough synthy meat to chew on as well. The melody is freakin' fantastic! This one hasn't been in my playlist for long but it's already become one of my most-listened to tracks. Insta-love.

1 Point: Sekaiju no MeiQ Super Arrange Version - Battle - Destruction Begets Decay

A very smooth introduction that melds into a nicely developed piano-rock number. Elements of funk and fusion kept it lively. Toss in some Latin brass and it gels just right. A very noteworthy selection, and one I'll be keeping.

1 Point: Tr3s Lunas - Tr3s Lunas

I'm always fond of seeing mainstream musicians take a stab at VGM composition. David Arkenstone and Ronnie Montrose have been pleasant surprises, so why not Oldfield? I've long been a huge fan of "Tubular Bells" and Oldfield's new-age style shines through here as well. It's cool and calculated but also enveloping. Quite nice.

1 Point: Maple Story (Game Rip) - Tree Dungeon

I greatly liked the first Maple Story submission to SotW (Above the Treetops), and am pleased to see that this one continues to relaxed, airy quality. Is it a track that will set the VGM community on fire? No, but it's still a pleasant listen and one for a nice, quiet summer afternoon. Nothing wrong with that, not by a longshot.

The rest of the tracks were actually good too - not a weak link in the bunch. This was a tremendous step up in quality from the past couple weeks. (I did listen to last week's tracks but never found time to vote.)

And now, a nomination:

Album: Iridion 3D & II Arranged Soundtrack
Composer: Manfred Linzner
Track Title: Aniki
Track Number: 9
Catalog Number: SHN CD 002
Source: Chudah's Corner
Additional Notes: None, other than that this song is absolutely spectacular.

Too many good tracks this week. I'm basically forced to vote like this otherwise I would have to think how to distribute 6 points among 7 tracks.

3 Points - Solar Tree Yggdrasill
2 Points - To the Blue Sky -Stage 1-
01 Point - Tr3s Lunas

Yay for more Konami!

Also, I was wondering if Dragon God was posting about SotW somewhere else besides STC since I never see him nominate himself, which I find kind of strange unless he was banned from this forum (or is really too shy, or don't give a damn)?

Superb week!

Boktai 3 Sabata's Counterattack (Game Rip) - Solar Tree Yggdrasill

Sounds older than its age with its charming retro flair. The composition is interesting as well, light and reflective, and quirky at times. I like it, but let's see what this week has in store before attributing points.

Legend of Game Music 2 ~Platinum Box~ - POWER DRIFT - LIKE THE WIND (B Course)

Quite representative of upbeat retro arcade Japanese VGM. I say it's good, but maybe a bit too standard for the first half to rise above the heap of similar tunes, yet I like the breakdown and soloing that begins at around 2:00 and consider it the saving grace of my earlier critic. All in all, a solid chiptune. Point-worthy? Not certain yet, but it's a good candidate.

Maple Story (Game Rip) - Tree Dungeon

Is it an American song? Hmm, seems not. Oh well, I once heard that American VGM is known for poor progression, so that must be what confused me... (Hello!)

With this aside, "Tree Dungeon" is an enjoyable and relaxing piece. Nothing is done wrong, but I find it a little too simple to score this week.

Okage: Shadow King Original Soundtrack - Vampire Evil King Battle

A battle theme usually sets a tense mood, which is not how I always like to feel. How about today? OK, I can take it, but not for too long. Well, that's good since this theme is rather short (but I would have preferred it to be longer and more developed). Does not sound evil either, but I guess the game is of a lighter nature than, for example, Silent Hill. Any merits? Certainly! I like the progression (it's Japanese VGM after all. Hi again!), and the rising rhythmic segment.

Sekaiju no MeiQ Super Arrange Version - Battle - Destruction Begets Decay

Ooh, now we're talking. A generous song, offering various distinct segments and a sweet performance. The melodic hook is rather simple, but as long as there's one, it enhances the memorability of the piece. I liked how it was first played on piano and then picked up by the guitar. Great energy, not too oppressive, awesome arrangement. This one is getting points.

A critic however: Yuzo Koshiro is not an obscure composer, and sometimes, I feel like there will be two reasons tp celebrate at week 200: the 200th week and the 200th Koshiro nomination. An hyperbole, yes, but not totally unfunded in my opinion. But at least it's not Uematsu, yet I feel like some nominations were not dug from so deep into the obscureness of VGM.

Storm of Progear Original Soundtrack - To the Blue Sky -Stage 1-

From the start, this song rises you into the sky. A decent structure, but it felt like a melodic lead was missing from my point of view. Or at least to make this song stand out as being "awesome".

Tr3s Lunas - Tr3s Lunas

The title track from the soundtrack written by one of my all-time favorite new age musician, Mike Oldfield (British by the way, hi hi!). His skills as a guitarist are excellent and a taste of them can be heard in "Tr3s Lunas", although I don't consider it to be his best composition or performance. His trademark ultra-clean Stratocaster is there, which is a sound that wins me every time. As a whole, the song is relatively simple and repetitive, yet the main melody is performed differently each time, which helps avoid making the listen to become boring. Also, the accompaniment could have been better in my opinion, as it often sounds somewhat generic. Another critic: the ending segment is slightly too long.

Even with these faults, I love the sound, the structure, the melodies, and how "Tr3s Lunas" hypnotizes me and can relax me without putting me to sleep.

Yogurting Original Soundtrack - The Student Council is Very Busy!

The good: Lively and bouncy, this is an entertaining song for sure. Great sound, neat usage of the harmonica, very cohesive and catchy as a whole.
The bad: Slightly simple and underdeveloped/short, yet I prefer a good and concise piece of music over a long and elaborated piece of crap (but I prefer even more further developed good music).
The ugly: Nothing. Oh wait, maybe the breakdown at 1:30-1:40, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it was ugly, just weaker than the rest.

Plain yogurt is good, but when there's more flavor to it, like "The Student Council is Very Busy!", it can taste even better.

--------------------

(3 points) Tr3s Lunas - Tr3s Lunas
(2 points) Sekaiju no MeiQ Super Arrange Version - Battle - Destruction Begets Decay
(1 point) Yogurting Original Soundtrack - The Student Council is Very Busy!

Sacrifices had to be made... Thanks to all nominators for the good selection!

Boktai 3 Sabata's Counterattack (Game Rip) - Solar Tree Yggdrasill A very nice chiptune with complex melody and development plus a nice dark feel. One of the better chiptunes we've had of late, and one hopes that it'll be entered if there's ever a BCC2.

Legend of Game Music 2 ~Platinum Box~ - POWER DRIFT - LIKE THE WIND (B Course) A pleasingly-done, if rather samey, bit o' synth. It's in the upper echelon of very similar tunes of this genre, and I enjoyed it, but that doesn't change the fact that the basic structure is identical to hundreds of other tracks.

Maple Story (Game Rip) - Tree Dungeon Very light, very ambient--much like the previous Maple Story track, if memory serves. Enjoyable if a bit slight.

Okage: Shadow King Original Soundtrack - Vampire Evil King Battle I recently played and beat Okage, so the time was right for a nomination. 50% of the OST is delightful quirk and the other half is utter shit; unfortunately, the battle tracks are on the awful side save this one. It effectively mixes action and quirk with some great melody, rhythm, and an appropriate faux-gothic sound. What a pity that it only plays once in the game!

Sekaiju no MeiQ Super Arrange Version - Battle - Destruction Begets Decay An odd track, moving from jazz solo trumpet to full on Falcom-style synth rock. The piano is a nice touch, but the trumpet totally takes me out of the song--so very out of place--and there are enough draggy parts to bring the whole thing down considerably.

Storm of Progear Original Soundtrack - To the Blue Sky -Stage 1- To be perfectly honest, I couldn't remember a note of this even after playing it twice. Very vanilla, with a wall of sound approach that effectively muffles whatever it's trying to do.

Tr3s Lunas - Tr3s Lunas Sort of a Latin/light adult contemporary fusion. Pleasant enough, but it didn't really engage me on any level. The piano is good, but the random whispered vocals made me reach for the Audacity.

Yogurting Original Soundtrack - The Student Council is Very Busy! Cute faux-western track. Those three words sum it up better than a paragraph of analysis could. So, to fill space, I offer this link.

A fine week all around, with the worst sin being flavorlessness.

The Point Spread
Okage - 3 pts.
Boktai 3 - 2 pts.
Maple Story - 1 pt.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Nice week.

3 pts. - Battle - Destruction Begets Decay
2 pts. - Tr3s Lunas
1 pt. - Tree Dungeon
Almost - The Student Council is Very Busy!

Destruction is amazing. Honestly, this is the best song I've heard in SotW in a long time. It's got a killer melody. When it repeats later on in the song, H. (who is he?) makes a wise choice in having the guitarists play it rather than just having it played on the piano again (it wouldn't have been nearly as special otherwise). The performers all do a nice job (I particularly enjoy the drumming), and the sound quality is great. I'll have to check out the rest of this album.

Tr3s Lunas is nice; it would probably get 3 points most weeks. Tree Dungeon is the 3rd (I think) Maple Story song I've heard in SotW, and like the others, it's enjoyable (that's another soundtrack I need to check out). The Student Council is fun, but not substantial enough to get points this week (or for me to want to listen to it much more). Power Drift and To The Blue Sky are passable (is there some reason To The Blue Sky only comes in through the left channel?). Solar Tree Yggdrasill is solid, and though it's not something I'd usually listen to, could have gotten a point had this been a lesser week. Vampire King Evil Battle isn't bad, but...it's not my thing, I guess.

Seriously?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

2 points - Tr3s Lunas - Tr3s Lunas
1 point - Boktai 3 Sabata's Counterattack (Game Rip) - Solar Tree Yggdrasill

And here's a nom:

Album: Insector X
Track Title: ORIENTAL FEAR (Pyramid)
Track Number: 2

I was speaking idiomatically.

Closing in a smidge.

H. is more fully known as "Sega Sound Unit [H.]," which somewhat answers the question: it's a Sega in-house band that arranges tracks from Sega games, kind of like how the S.S.T. Band used to. It's even got a few of the same members: Hiroshi Miyauchi and Takenobu Mitsuyoshi. Check the discography here.

I can only think that you mean how every other nomination is ZTS, but I swear this must be some cruel joke how the songs I currently enjoy and nominate are from the same artist. I get a little shock everytime I type in an artist’s name, just because composer-sensitive participants’ senses are on alert, so I can only offer that you or others forget immediately about recognizing a certain artist if some negative connotations in which way ever are associated to them. I can ensure however that if it’s coincidentally from the same artist, I try to nominate tracks that are different from style, instrumentation and atmosphere. I don’t really have a regard for composer/artists.

Ok, next time anyone hints at this, I’m gonna go: fuck yeah, there can never be enough ZTS ZTs zTS ztS ZtS zts Zts zTs. Fuck yeah, 2^3 combinations of z, t, s (condition: same order, may use capital).

Next time you should nominate a ZTS song with japanese vocals, half the participants will drop dead from massive brain haemorrhages

It's just that repeatedly nominating songs from the same (barely eligible) artist seems to go against SotW's purpose of exposing people to lesser known/different quality game music. The fact that all (or almost all) of these songs are doujin arrangements puts me off even more, I guess; I might have a different opinion if these were actually songs composed for games. But that's just how I feel; I may be in the minority here.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
