Flash drive question

I go to a college with 2 seperate internet connections. The one in the dorm rooms is PAINFULLY slow and I really can't play any online games using it. The one in the 24 hour computer labs is much faster. I don't really want to bring by entire computer there since its a bit of a walk and I don't have a laptop. My question would be, if I got an 8 gig flash drive would I be able to load and play WoW off of it without putting the files physically on the computer?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

My bet is a yes. Although I don't know a lot.
I'm guessing it will be a tight squeeze. But it may work.

Couldn't you just try it anyway?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

It's funny. I had a bit of a dilemma like that today.

My friend came over with a portable HD today to get me some stuff, unfortunately, neither of us expected it to transfer so slowly, so we had to cancel it. Turns out that because my PC uses a USB 1.0 that it's painfully slow.

I could watch movies from there, and all that, but actually copy a file would be a slow process. It could be very well that running a game directly would be no problem. I didn't try, but I would be sure to try it out somehow. See if that PC has USB 2.0 or 1.0, then see if running a game on it works fine.

Other then that, as long as the game is properly installed on the HD it shouldn't be a problem. You may have to reset a few settings in WoW, but I doubt it. It will probably use the default settings.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

You might be better off buying a 40GB harddrive and dropping it into an external USB2.0 or firewire enclosure over shelling out all the money for a 8GB flash drive.

It may or may not work (a vague answer I know), it depends where and what files the game needs to install to run. A complex game like WOW will probably require files outside the WOW directory and will almost definitely need to write entries to the Registry.
If you install the game on the computer labs computer choosing the flash drive as the installation destination it may well work, however installing it on the dorm computer and copying the WOW folder across to the flash drive would probably be less successful.

But hey it can work, my dad did something similar with some of his games (I forget which ones) and the only one that had major problems was Soldier of Fortune.

I was speaking idiomatically.

No, I'm pretty sure it will run.

I once installed WoW on my E drive, but had to format the drive that had windows in it. I reinstalled windows and all that jazz, and was still able to run it afterwards.

The only real problem I had with it was a directx error, but that was obviously because windows comes with version...7? Not the version you need for WoW anyway.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Xellos, Yeah thats pretty similar to what my dad did, I was suprised to find that some of his games still worked although Soldier of Fortune wouldn't play ball.

If thats the case then it should work, let us know how it goes Viperas!
