Front Mission (DS)
![]() ![]() ![]()
Now this is quite exciting. I was a fan of Front Mission 3 and 4, though I have yet to beat either one of them. Seeing this game being remade on the DS is great news. I certainly can't wait. Discuss your anticipation of the DS game and any previous Front Mission games. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Man, this is my most anticipated game at the moment. I can't wait for this to come out.
I had been playing the SNES rom along with the English patch, but once I heard this was coming out, I stopped playing in antincipation of it (I don't know exactly how far I was in the game (I'm guessing I was about halfway through), but either way I wanted to wait for the superior version to come out). As for my experience with other games in the series, I never played three, and I've only played a demo of the fourth one (I do have it though, I just haven't had the time to play it, and I wanted to finish the first game beforehand anyway). There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
woot nice I never played the original, actually I only played 3 and 4 and was so hoping to get FM5 but sadly it never was release outside of japan ; ; (it looked so good! ;
![]() I wonder if now with the character from FM5 added in it, if they will decide to release FM5 XD This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |

I've played some of Front Mission 3 as well but never got into it too much nor am too familiar with the series. But with this DS release, it could be a lil bit money. I'm looking forward to it.

The full article referenced Front Mission 2nd and it sounded like a combination of the first and second games are going to be in this remake. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Supposedly, if this sells well, then Squenix will look in to releasing FM5 state-side. The problem with 3 & 4 has to do with neither receiving much advertisement. If it received that, the series would be golden state-side.
Plus the PS3 doing shitty is giving the PS2 more life. Hopefully this'll sell nicely and FM5 will get a go-ahead in a grab for cash. FELIPE NO
Hey, maybe you should try that thing Chie was talking about.

This is what I found FM4 to be like; slow paced and dull. I don't think Front MIssion will sell very well for the DS, but it's good to hear it's coming. FM5 I won't hold out any hope for, though. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Well, FM is aimed at an older age bracket. Anyone's younger brother could hop in to FFX-2, and any perverted teenager could fap to Yuna's hot-pants.
Whereas FM games require a more rigorous translation. This is one reason why X-seed won't touch it (aside from Square of America possibly having a death-grip on it), I'm afraid. If it could be advertised, it'd get attention. SRPGs are big thanks to Nippon Ichi, and mecha games are always good. Am I the only guy who didn't find FM4 as dull? I was so damn hungry for a FM follow-up to 3 that I absolutely loved it. I wish the two paths combined eventually, though... Jam it back in, in the dark.

The original quote from Gamespot:
Would anybody with further information on this care to clarify? Also for the record, there never was a "Front Mission 2nd". The name of the original Front Mission sequel was just "Front Mission 2" ever since. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Given that Strategy RPGs were a pretty obscure market, way back when, I wouldn't necessarily attribute it entirely to what's popular these days. RPGs were explosively popular back in the late 1990s, but they're a dime a dozen these days. It definitely does have to do with the play style required, however, it isn't necessary to try to sneak in a jab at the intellect of people who want a game that doesn't take an investment to get into. I loved Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, but fuck me if I had judged it based off the first few hours. Anyway, I also want to point out that it took a while before Square re-released Final Fantasy Tactics, and it hasn't been until recently where you could say there really was a market for them in the west, as already stated this is largely due in part to Nippon Ichi. I love the Front Mission, but that's mostly because I had an infatuation with military culture in my teens (and I'm also in the military... no this doesn't really mean much). Front Mission 4 was okay to me, but I found the previous episodes were a bit more inspired, especially given that one scenario was basically "Three Kings - Front Mission." I don't have a problem with tributes that might seem derivative of source material... but it was flagrant in the case of FM4. I did enjoy the fact that the paths didn't converge, it gave the world a sense of connectivity through subtlety. I will buy this game for the DS, especially if it means we'll see Scars of War over here. I hear that it is the best playing game in the series thus far, and that alone is good news. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
Front Mission 4 didn't strike me as a very dull game unless you're the sort who's bored by any strategy RPG. Although this is where I cynically grumble that Nippon Ichi's games probably get attention more for the flashy special effects than the strategy aspect. FM4 let you play around for hours with mech assembly as any good giant robot themed game should, but they also let you just purchase pre-assembled (non-sucky at that) mechs and skip straight to the battles.
I'm assuming the game system is getting some tweaking as well? I never played the first game, but I imagine the gameplay must be pretty clunky compared to the later entries, just by virtue of having six games overall in which to refine the system. The first installment is really good, actually. Don't dismiss it because it's a SNES title; the system had some REAL gems.

Any announced bonuses? What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
So has anyone else picked this up yet? I got it today, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I definitely can't wait to put in a lot of time on it this weekend, though.
And on a strange note, there's one of those Nintendo WFC booklets inside the case, even though the game obviously isn't online. Weird. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
I can't really comment on the Black Hounds, I'm still working through the original Canyon Crows side of the story. I like it.
Not really sure why they threw a WFC book in there either, the only thing even remotely online is trading some wanzer data via local wireless unless there's some secret thing you need to unlock... which I kind of doubt. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Wow, how did I miss this? I actually finished the fan-translation of this game and I bought a DS recently.. This is definitely something I'd like to pick up.

Being near Gamestop HQ helps.
Also ROM dumps. I started on the game this evening, I'd only ever played the Front Mission released for Playstation (2? 3? I'm not sure?). Good to see that the experience from that carries over. I love the combat, taking out everything but the enemy's torso is good fun. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]()

Started playing this yesterday. Would have been earlier, but the ROM wasn't available until the day after it came out, and by then I was engrossed in other things. I'm very happy with it so far. It's pretty much a perfect port of the SNES original, and the translation isn't all that different from the fan-done one.
I'm mainly glad that they didn't fag it up with a 'modern' anime art direction. FELIPE NO |
