Couple questions about Verizon Fios internet service
1) Does it work well with internet gaming? I currently use DSL and get decent pings on games like Team Fortress 2 and such. Will Fios help, hurt or perhaps remain the same in this area?
2) Under the About Installation section on their site (http://www22.verizon.com/content/con...stallation.htm) It mentions that installation is free for your primary computer but you need to pay $90 bucks to set up additional computers. Does this mean I couldn't hook up two computers through a router to this service like I do with DSL and like you can do with cable? Is there some special installation that needs to be done to each computer that would require this extra payment? Or is this extra payment just for those who aren't network savy and would rather pay than set it up themselves? Any help is appreciated, thank you Jam it back in, in the dark. |
1) Better
2) They give you a router along with that payment. It's not required. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I recently changed my service to Verizon Fios, and I am really satisfies with the service I get, except the TV service.
![]() Anyway, to answer the question: 1) It won't likely make much difference when you play regular online games, but it makes huge difference when you play FPS or when you host a dedicated server, or where you are required to host the game. Because of the nice upstream speed, you will never get high ping if you choose good servers. For me, I get less than 10 ping for most Team Fortress 2 games. 2) They provide you with a modem/router combo, but if you are planning to use the wireless function and receive actiontec router, be prepare to change it with other wireless routers, because it tends to send really weak/inconsistent signal and it will drop your connection like every 10 seconds. ...But overall, I am really happy with the down/up speed I get. ![]() This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() Thanks to Minoko for such an awesome sig/ava combo! ![]() |
Didn't see this thread until now, but I'll add my 2 cents worth.
1) I don't play computer games online, but it's made a world of difference with XBL. I had Comcast before I switched, and one night the speed would be fine and the next night it would drop to abysmal levels. With Fios, my speed is constant, and the upstream is much higher, plus I'm paying almost the same amount for a much faster speed ($43 for 6Mb with Comcast vs. $50 for 15Mb with Fios). 2) I didn't notice until I recently bought a laptop with wifi capabilities, but the Actiontec router does drop the signal quite often. My laptop sits right next to the router, but some nights the signal is constantly dropping and reconnecting. The router was also somewhat difficult to get to work with my DS/Wii, but after some fiddling, it seems to work fine now. I can't get the Fios TV service in my area, so no comment on that, but all in all I'm much happier with their internet service than I was with Comcast. Most amazing jew boots |
