Compressing Files? Winrar maybe?
Heya,
I wanna compress a file by 33MB (from 733MB) so I can fit it onto a CD... I tried "adding to archive" and for compression I choose "best" but it only reduces it by 15MB.... I remember downloading things that were 750MB and when extracted it would be well over 1GB... so what methods are best to compress this one file I have? Thanks PS. OMG I feel like I'm spamming the Help Desk ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() ^By Auro from the FFXII board... Thanks ^^ |
Far as I know Winrar should be able to do it. But if it only shrank it by 15 MB I might recommend another compression app called WinUHA. It's pretty good at compressing just about everything. Maybe you should give that a try.

It might just be what you're trying to compress isn't very compressible.
For an example, try compressing 5mb of .bmp files and then compressing the same amount of .jpg files. See which one saves more space. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
With the new program it compressed it to 713MB still 13 MB over
BTW what I'm trying to compress is pretty much a .exe file... hmmm if I zipped/winrar it then compress it would it be compressible :P BTW the thing I was talking about that almost compressed double the size was an .iso file but it wasn't me who compressed that so I wouldn't know what that person used I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() ^By Auro from the FFXII board... Thanks ^^ |
If you are really desperate, you could try using PAQ or 7-Zip, although I make no guarantees of whether you will achieve what you want or not. Not to mention that the compression algorithms are very memory and time intensive, and only god knows how long it will take to compress.
Then of course there is the whole fact that these aren't very popular compression programs, and you might forget what program you used. But that is a risk you will have to take. Before trying all this though, Windows includes an excellent compression tool in the command prompt called "del," which I think you should try. Just type in "del" and the directory and file name of what you want to compress, and boom! tons of space saved. ![]() Most amazing jew boots |
K I'll try those programs ^^
BTW what did you mean by del? So I type in del\C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Desktop\BLeh\PT ? Thanks What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() ^By Auro from the FFXII board... Thanks ^^ |

del is the commandline delete on Windows.
You could try one of those experimental packers with a insane amount of dictionary bytes. 7zip also gives you the possiblity to increase dictionary size. Keep in mind that memory consumption while packing AND unpacking increases. It's fairly easy for 7zip to consume more than 1 gig of memory while packing. If that won't work why don't you try overburning the media? FELIPE NO |
Overburning never works with me... but it doesn't matter ^^
Thanks for the programs - I dun mind if it takes memory or any of that and I appreciate your help ^^ How ya doing, buddy? ![]() ^By Auro from the FFXII board... Thanks ^^ |

I only mentioned memory consumption because of this:
- compressing with PAQ or 7zip already takes at lot more time than the usual compression formats - If you don't have enough memory installed on your system (say you have 1Gig installed) and set the dictionary size to an amount that uses 1,5Gig you won't have much fun because compression takes at LOT longer then (meaning >20 times the normal time) I once tried it this way with a normal size file (around 100MB) and it wouldn't finish in about a week. The main reason is the speed of swap space which lies on your harddrive. And that one is a lot slower than random access memory. Just make sure you use a sane dictionary size, otherwise... Jam it back in, in the dark. |
What are you trying to compress anyway?
Try this here thingy: ECM - Neill Corlett's Home Page You're supposed to run ecm first on that file, then winrar it. Note that ECM was made for CD images. It may not work on any other file! There's nowhere I can't reach. |
