NEOSHO, Mo. -- A gunman opened fire in a Neosho church Sunday, killing three people and wounding several others.

The call came in to police about 2 p.m. from the First Congregational Church near downtown, said Desiree Bridges, Neosho spokeswoman. An unknown number of people, but fewer than 10, were also shot and wounded, she said. The shooting took place in the church sanctuary, she said.

The shooter, a man, was being held at the Newton County Jail, but police were not releasing any information about him. Bridges, however, said the suspect was related to someone in the church, but she would not elaborate.

Bridges said the shooter had three firearms on him, but wouldn't say what type. The shooting followed the 1 p.m. service.

The shooter then held about 25 to 50 people hostage. Negotiations lasted about 10 minutes, while police were in the church basement, Bridges said.

Eh, bound to happen sooner or later... Not sure if this has ever happened before, but still a pretty fucked up crime, and that's coming from someone who is not religious.

Then again, this pales in comparison to extremists who kill in the name of god, but I digress...

Yes. Carlin said that the system was always in a state of breaking down. In many ways I agree with him. However, George Carlin also said that you should use the same brush to clean 'armpits, asshole, crotch and teeth'.

I am pretty sure incidents like this are going to get a lot worse. Religion probably isn't as charitable as it would have people believe. Maybe this is karma. Its definitely not cool, but not very surprising.

I wonder if religion will be wiped out in the next few centuries? (or humans for that matter)

You DO know he was being sarcastic about that particular point right?

In the case of the shootings, why did the gunman show up in the first place?
