Murder #236 for 2007 in Philly today

I don't know if anyone has been paying attention, but this town is getting out of control with the homicides lately and is far and away worse than every other city right now in this country. Like 10 people were killed this weekend alone and the numbers just keep piling up. Also what is sick is that no witnesses are coming out and speaking up about any of these crimes. There have been reported witnesses at many of the scenes this weekend who just won't speak up. July has just been an awful month and quite possibly the single worst month I can ever remember living here as far as homicides go. It simply isn't safe to walk around anymore here risk of getting killed.

#236 right now which is over 1 per day and it is going to well surpass the 406 of last year. The sad thing is that you can't have an intelligent debate about the issue without being labelled a racist. People aren't taking personal responsibilities for these crimes and are blaming them on everyone but themselves. The cops, the mayor, the police commish are all to blame. Everyone but the people killing themselves.

These murders don't have any motives either. Most of them lately have just been some innocent 14 year old kid walking home from the park being popped in the back of the head. I don't know who has been keeping up with it, but it is getting national now, and I'm going to have to get out of this place soon. It is getting too dangerous. I can only imagine how people in real warzones feel like.

How ya doing, buddy?

Let's have a nice little chat about crime and how bad it has gotten today.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I live about halfway between Washington and Baltimore, so I've become somewhat desensitized to all the crime around here. The last time I was in Philadelphia on business, a security guard started warning me about all the crime in the city. All I had to say was, "Dude, I'm from Baltimore," and he clammed up real fast.

Of course, the county I live in (Howard) is the most affluent in Maryland. We see all the crime on the news, but it doesn't really happen in our community. Last time I checked, homicides in the county were in the single digits. There was a murder a few weeks ago, and all of a sudden all the stores and apartments had Crimestoppers posters up, and there was a community meeting planned. Compared to where I used to live, in PG County right outside DC, where it wasn't uncommon to hear gunshots at night, it's laughable how much the folks around here get worked up over a murder.

Kain, while I don't know the numbers, it seems like every night there's a new murder on the news here in Pittsburgh as well. The guy that works in the lab next to mine had his car stolen while he was at work, and it was then used for a double homicide downtown in broad daylight (The worst part is the cops knew the plate number of the car but never called him about it! Where the heck else would you start?)

Guess that's the life in Pistolvania.

I'm kind of glad I don't live there now.

I mean, in LA you've got a lot of crime too, but apparently mexicans don't kill each other as much as blacks.

Or the mexicans just don't bother reporting it because there's more where that one came from

While the blacks are all recovering from the violence in their neighborhoods, the Mexicans are too busy taking their jobs to bother killing eachother. Duh.

Yea, it really is getting bad in some states, and only will get worse. Basically because the normal citizens are moving out of the crime-driven areas and more criminals are moving in. Philly is losing a lot of people population-wise, because regular citizens like me are getting fed up and moving to outside towns and suburban areas. I honestly don't see it getting better. Something has to be done.

There is the possibility that the witnesses were gang members. If its a normal citizen, they are probably familiar with the neighborhood and the people that live in it. Therefore they are less likely to identify the killers because they enjoy living.
Identifying the murders could mark them for death. People are afraid, and I don't blame them. If people mind their own business, there is less reason for them to meet the same fate. Its a sad thing as many of these types of gang related crimes will remain unsolved.

Usually it has nothing to do with being afraid. People in neighborhoods like that don't like cops.

They wouldn't talk to them or help them even if it were their own Mother who was shot.

Yeah, but there are PEOPLE everywhere. BAD people who murder.
No matter where you go, you're either going to be surrounded by death or lonely.

Sometimes it's not even as bad as it sounds. I know that here in Atlanta they're constantly talking about how at least one person a day is shot and killed or raped or something like that, but how many people live in Atlanta?
I mean, percent-wise, one death a day isn't as bad as it sounds.

If all the murders had a motive the issue would be different though, don't you think? I think it's the randomness of it all that scares people, and I don't blame 'em for it. The next time it could be you, walking home from a day at work or school, getting popped in the head, killing you on the spot.

If you're scared enough to be thinking of moving from the city, I think that's a pretty good indicator that something's terribly wrong. Personally, I'm not sure I would be able to handle the stress.

I used to work in Yeadon, just right outside of southwest Philly. I'd never live in the city if I had an option to live elsewhere. Hell, the news alone was bad enough when I lived in the general region. Everyday just about you'd hear that some random horrible crime happened in center city. There's lots of decent middle class neighborhoods a few miles outside of Philly. Consider somewhere like Aston or Media. Just stay away from Chester, because it's arguably a lot worse.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
