Processes on PC...
Just wondering if having 64 processes running at the same time is typical, on most PCs...
Either way, I want to make sure there's nothing there that is malicious. ![]() Here's my Task Manager below, if you are interested: Jam it back in, in the dark. |
WOW. o_O
64 processes in WinXP is NOT uncommon on store-bought PCs like yours. Is it HP brand? I don't recognize any of those to be particularly malicious, but the sheer number of them is ridiculous. I have 20 processes on my machine... I can only imagine how slow your computer must be with all those running. :/ My advice is to re-install XP with just a regular XP disc (not your system recovery discs) if you want to get rid of them all. That way, all that pre-installed shit won't be present on your new and lean WinXP system. Most amazing jew boots |
I am used to having between roughly 35 and 45 processes running on Windows 2000 and XP64, even with several big applications running. 64 sounds like way too many to me although store-bought PCs are often filled with useless junk that runs in the background. It does look like an HP, but i've had the good fortune of never having owned one so i'm not sure.
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
It's a Dell XPS 400, BTW. ![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I usually have something in the region of 30+ processes running. Perhaps a few more if I am actively multi-tasking, but I don't believe 60+ is normal or healthy. At the moment I have 32, and there's a fair bit going on.
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
Seems a few are listed more than once, take svchost for an example...
Though, quite a few are for auto-updates. Probably should just find out which processes are for what and remove those that aren't needed. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I also use Mcafee 2007 and my processes are 43.
How ya doing, buddy?

Right now I got 42 processes going, including Trillian, AVG, Skype, Firefox, and so on. 64 (!!!) is DAMN too much. I suggest an OEM installation of XP. If your computer is retail, you should have a CD-Key on the side of the case. Your installation is installing unneeded shit on your computer.

Thanks for the replies! I finally took the time to work on this today and went ahead and stopped several unneeded programs and auto-updates. All in all, I was able to get my processes down to 48, though the pics below show 49...
Trying to figure out what might still be able to be removed from startup though! ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark. |
I also have a lot of processes and my computer is from HP. I have a serial number but no install disk (am I suppose to have been given one?). I bought my computer years ago at Best Buy.
There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
What's formating (well I know it clears things out but if i do that to my hard drive; won't I lose Windows XP as well?) and what will it do to my computer. I had my computer for about fours year and done nothing to it (is that a bad thing?
