the new speakeasy

okay this one cigarete company opened a smokers bar in chicago, well anyway chicago has a ban on smoking in public, so they opened this place as a cigarete manfufacuring plant, so people can buy cigaretes there for 9 bucks a pop, eh, so what do you think about it?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I think that we need more details, because...

talking like this like omg so fast must type get post in is not good.

In other words, what? So, a smokers bar is going against the city government. Then again, is a 'bar' in 'public'? Is this illegal or what?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I heard about this on NPR. It's like a coffee house, except for smokes. They have all sorts of flavored shit, herbal shit - crazy stuff. I would be willing to try it, even though the mere idea sounds like something you'd find on the UCBerkeley campus borders. Pretentious, rebellious, et cetera.

I wish I could find the article. I've been looking for about 10 minutes to no avail for the audio clip.

Sounds interesting, though I have to wonder how the author is going to substitue the Prohibition Era environment, as presently there isn't (as I see it) much of a solid comparison between then and now.

Oh, and off-topic, but are hookas (sp) also illegal?

I was speaking idiomatically.

I think so, just not in every state. I wonder if they're legal in MA. If we can't have head shops, I doubt we have hookahs lounges. THOUGH I HAVE seen one in a storefront window of a lounge locally. Just never gets used. ;_;

And yea, the threadmaker was a little incoherent. I was thinking "HM. MAYBE I SHOULD LAUGH AT HER." But then I realized I heard about this on NPR, in a much more clear and concise fashion. I WISH I could find the goddamned audio. It was interesting.

My dad and I listen to NPR (okay, he listens to it and I hear it). He keeps a pretty concise record of everything too, I'll ask him about finding an audio clip when he gets home.

I have no clue why this is in Media Centre, and it doesn't seem that political.

Off to General Discussion you go!

A privately owned business running in a privately owned building is not a public place, even if it allows anyone in the public to enter. So it is breaking no laws.

its not privately owned, some cigarete company owns it..

anywho heres an article,

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n1424086.shtml

any who it is a sort of speakeasy, in the fact that, well, chicago outlawed smoking in public, and this is the only public place they can puff legally.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Do you even know what "privately owned" means? Obviously not. It means owned by something that is not the government. Christ, kids these days.

If they can do it legally it's nothing like a speakeasy. PROHIBITION breeded speakeasies. ILLEGALITY is required for the comparison to hold.

Yeah, hookas aren't illegal in Iowa or Oregon. Not sure about Illinois.
