Game Music Central - "Best of the Best: A Tribute To Game Music"
Music4Games has just published Jayson Napolitano's review of "Best of the Best: A Tribute To Game Music" (Volume One)
http://www.music4games.net/Review_Display.aspx?id=70 Here's the official album announcement: http://www.music4games.net/News_Display.aspx?id=621 So what do you think about this concept? Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Well, given your reviewer cautiously pans it, the album doesn't sound very exciting
![]() But the review is much appreciated. It's very hard to get objective commentaries or reviews for such releases, as many people may like video games such as Myst III (my wife's favourite game), or its' music and thus praise its' inclusion, despite as Jayson said in his review, it's straight from the Myst III score. A tribute to game music should be something new, not just a 'best of' or compilation. Also, that tracklist doesn't look very promising, hardly the 'best of game music' or games, even. Medal of Honor and God of War best games ever made? Yeah, right. Chrono Trigger is a different matter of course. If your question means "What do you think of the concept of a best of album", then my response is, "an album done better than this", but if it means "What do you think of our reviews which are done in this format", then my response is, I like it very much. Keep up the good work, I'll have to visit your site more often. - Spike There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I know exactly what you mean. I had to walk a fine line between being disappointed about the tracklist and giving each track a fair shot. Really, even if they're not the best games, they can still very well be great pieces of music, which was the case with several tracks from games I've never played (RoboBlitz, Tokyo Drift, etc.). Overall, the album is about half good, which is really all you can hope for from a standard album. It's definitely not the best of the best, but it's not the worst, either. I hope they clean some things up with Volume 2 and invite some real "celebrity composers" from Japan to contribute.
Oh, and to add, yes, making a "tribute to game music" shouldn't consist of arranging your own work, either! This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
