The Mouse Thread
In this thread, we discuss mice! In need of a mouse? Ask for suggestions! Have a kick-ass mouse? Write a mini-review! Have a specific question about mice? Ask here!
Right now I am using a crappy dell optical mouse. I say crappy because when I use the scroll wheel to scroll down, it scrolls down, and when I use the scroll wheel to scroll up, it scrolls down. Also, it jumps all over the place. Not only that, but Dell supplied it with a holographic mouse pad. Hmm, nice going. I am in need of a decent mouse. I do some gaming, but not a whole lot of graphic design, so it doesn't need 9999999 DPI. Right now I have my eye on the Logitech MX Revolution. ![]() I haven't used one, but I have held one. Damn, does that thing feel nice in your hand. The scroll wheel is kinda neat; if you flick it really hard, the resistor inside will release tension, and turn itself into a flywheel. If you flick it just a bit, it will function as a regular wheel. It also has a thumb-wheel and a load of other customizable buttons. It is rechargeable, all you have to do is put it on the cradle (no AAAs here, folks). The only thing that deters me from this mouse is the DPI. Is 800 low enough to notice? Would I be saying to myself "this doesn't have much precision", or am I likely not to notice the difference between this and a 2000 DPI mouse? Also, one question about wireless mice in general: I've heard that after you stop using them for a few seconds and they go into "sleep" mode, they take a second to react to the next input. Are there any mice that respond instantaneously out of sleep mode, or is there an option you can change to enable/disable sleep mode? How does this work on the MX revolution? One last thing: I will do this so you don't have to. ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark. I dunno but this mouse there (like may other mice) looks as if it's gonna hurt your hand. I could never work with something like that. I've been using Microsoft mice since the very beginning. Preferably MS Optical Wheel Mouse, it's not too complicated, it has a nice design and as long as you don't want to play Counterstrike 24/7, it also has enough functions.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I use a very basic Logitech optical mouse. I want my mice with wires and to be optical. That's all I need.

People who use dark colored text on dark background should be banned.
Hell, you know what? People who wrap text colors around their entire posts should be banned. I like this mouse: ![]() As far as preference: The Revolution feels nice but is WAY too expensive. The lowly MX518 will perform just as good (I love mine) for maybe a quarter of the price. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I just got my MX Revo a couple days ago. I was debating for a long time whether or not to get it, as the price point was pretty steep, but it had a lot of features I wanted.
I'm so fucking glad I did. It is supremely comfortable, the flywheel feature is amazing, the buttons are all completely customizable with a plugin for the included software "SetPoint" called "UberOptions," and the battery lasts forever. I also recently picked up the Kensingtom Expert Mouse: I hadn't used a trackball for about 6 years when I grabbed this one, and man have they come a long way. Last one I used was a cheapie 2-button deal wiith a cheaply-made blue ball and physical tracking. This bad-boy has optical tracking, a huge ball (hrhrhrhrhr big ballz), a nifty scroll ring built in around the ball compartment, and the two top buttons instantly registered to Dashboard and Expose on my G5. Thing's comfortable as all hell to use, even if it was $100. I was speaking idiomatically. It is not my custom to go where I am not invited. |

Sleep mode doesn't kick in until it's been idle for about 30 seconds. As for the 800DPI, it's fine for quick graphics-editing jobs and working in OpenOffice. Can't really say much beyond that. I don't do anything with 3D rendering or science/simulation/CAD/anything else requiring super-precise movements on that computer, so it doesn't make too much of a difference to me what the DPI is on my mouse. Seems pretty precise for what I've seen so far, though.

![]() I've got the Logitech G5. This is an EXCELLENT mouse. After going through 2 wireless mice before this, I won't ever go back. Wireless mice are downright terrible for gaming. On the other hand, I use a wireless keyboard an it's 100% the same as a wired one. Go figure. The G5 took a little getting used to since it was a lot larger than my previous mice. The feet on the bottom, coupled with a fairly slick mousepad is ideal because it is a little heavier than the MX518. Tracking is butter smooth and runs at 500MHz rather than wireless and it's cruddy 125MHz. The two things that have me screaming for a redesign on this mouse is the lack of a browser 'forward' button and the loose scroll wheel. However, I've learned to cope by using the keyboard for such buttons, especially for Counter-Strike. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I use a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse for my laptop. It's quite the durable thing as it has taken drops and accidental "stepped upon." The only problem is that it's a bit small in my hand. Making it one or two centimeters longer, length-wise, would have probably make it a better fit for me.
I'm looking at the Logitech Mouse that Grawl posted above, because it's a bit bigger. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
LURK MOAR Also, I might pick up the MX Revolution from the store and give it a test drive. I can probably find it on sale for $80, which I'm willing to pay given it's a good product. So what?
It's distracting and obnoxious when you're trying to hold a real conversation here (which is exactly what you're trying to do with this thread.) I'm all for having your fun, but this is ridiculous and being more annoying than Ace Combat or a_ week ever could possibly be. Don't be a dick, for chrissakes. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

I own a Logitech MX1000 in Midnight Black (the only practical colour, since all metallic matt paints on Logitech mice wear away and end up looking crap).

I always wondered, what's with that weird colour scheme on the G5? The MX510/518 have the color swirl patterns which are kinda funky and psychedelic, but not as outlandish as the G5's rusted-metal look.
Then again, for all its comfort, the MX Revo looks downright bizarre. FELIPE NO It is not my custom to go where I am not invited. |
@CelticWhisper: I've heard from an MX Revolution review that the thumb wheel, back/forward buttons and search button can't be bound to actions in games. Is this true? Even with/without the setpoint software?

I don't know about in games, but SetPoint has some limitations. You'll need the UberOptions plugin to remove the limitations and open up universal mapping.
I'm not a hundred percent certain, but UberOptions looks like it should be able to to configure the thumb wheel in games as well. Jam it back in, in the dark. It is not my custom to go where I am not invited. |
That's the same mouse that I've had for ages, and it hasn't given me any troubles. Inexpensive and gets the job done perfectly.

![]() ive had this for about 4 years and it still works decent How ya doing, buddy? |
![]() there was a time where bestbuy had a deal about that mouse were it was only 25$cad (was 80$cad the normal price) and at that time I was looking for a better mice so I jumped on the occasion. I love that mouse and the ability to change the sensitivity is great in some game. Oh and I can't live without the forward/backward button now, I always find myself search for them with my thumb at my school ; ; I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |

2 buttons, scroll wheel. Ultra basic optical mouse, uses PS/2, cost me like 3 pounds. I guess since I've never had any better, I don't really mind it at all. I might even say I like it. This is my first optical mouse, and I've had it for years. It still works perfectly too, and I don't get any of that "cursor jumping" I sometimes hear of people getting. The surface I use it on is just the (varnished) bare top of my wooden desk. I had a mousepad for a while, but it works better just on the desk. Cheap and cheeful. Beats cleaning my balls every few months =p At my college, they use the mice grawl linked, but I don't notice any difference between theirs and mine. I was speaking idiomatically. |
I've been thinking about getting a Logitech MX1000 or MX Revolution for my Mac Pro... but Logitech's styling really turns me off. It just screams "OMG I'M HARDKORE FRAGGIN N00BS." Lame. I wish they could make a mouse that was as understated as the Apple Mighty Mouse, but had one of those smexy Logitech sensors in it. Flywheel idea's kinda cool, though I really like the horizontal scrolling ball in the Mighty Mouse. Not having two discrete buttons sucks though, in those rare situations (mostly games) where being able to click/click-and-hold both at the same time would be useful. So many tradeoffs.
That said, I'll probably get one eventually, just for having it. The 1000 isn't as guilty of the l337 g4m3r styling as the Revolution is. Plus, my old MX900 (<3 Bluetooth, hate that Logitech has abandoned it) has a wonky left button, where it randomly (and more and more often) double clicks instead of single-clicking. Yuck. Then I'll just move the MM over to "portable duty" w/ my PowerBook. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
killmoms - Well, don't really.
Makin' trailers er'ry day. |
For those who own the Revolution: I have also heard that the wheel click (middle wheel on the top) does not function as a normal wheel-click (Closing tabs in Firefox). If this is the case, does UberOptions fix this? I can grab this thing at Staples for $59.99, but I want to be sure before I buy it.

I usually go for every other generation of Logitech mice. The MX700 was the first wireless mouse I got from them, then I skipped the MX1000 and selected the G7 (the 65 minus the weights and wire), which I use now and love. <3
I'll probably skip the Revolution and get whatever comes next... unless it's THAT good. ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark. |
