HAY GUYS

I just built my own computer yesterday, all finished, everything runs and works. I checked to see if it works by booiting Knoppix from a disc and testing it out. Everything is fine. All drives work, etc, etc.

I took my computer back to my house from school (where I built it at) and tried to install Windows XP Pro on it. I got an error that read like so :

For realtek rtl8139(A/B/C)/RLT8130 pci fast ethernet controller v 2.11 (001205
Pxe-e61: meadia test failure, check cable
Pxe-M0F: exiting PXE rom

I tried the cd in a different computer, and it ran windows OS installer no problem.

Does someone know what the problem could be?

When (and where) do you get this error message?

Have you checked if the NIC is correctly installed in the PCI (?) slot?

The message indicates you are trying to boot off a non-existing LAN. Change the boot order in your BIOS as appropriate. If symptoms persist, check your hard disks for errors.

I would try what Zergrinch suggested and try changing your boot order in the BIOS.

Is your NIC onboard? If the above doesn't work, try flashing your BIOS with the latest version.

Hmm, but doesn't Aise tell us that the (error) message appears during the Windows setup? (or does it appear after POST?) But PXE processing should be initiated right after POST if I understand it correctly. And furthermore the system worked the other day. That would mean that it was connected to a network and DID boot from it.

What about removing the NIC from the system and check again?

I was speaking idiomatically.

I'm pretty sure it's either an issue with the boot order (CD -> Network -> Hard Disk) or there's something wrong with his hard disk. I'm positive that's an error message that appears after the power-on self test.

I got the same problem myself, when my hard disk conked out. My boot order was set to (Hard Disk -> Floppy -> CD -> Network). As I didn't have any bootable floppies or CDs, it tries to boot off the network to no avail.

When I inserted a bootable CD in it, the message disappears, but of course the hard disk was nowhere to be found.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

This was the problem. And it had occured during the POST, because I couldnt boot Windows.
