Ever heard Game Music being used in other media or events?

Have you guys ever heard game music, or even anime music used in media or events other than games? Like say a ballet performance or a TV show?

I unfortunatly experience alot of the latter, which I dont think its nesscary a good thing.Alot of Hong Kong TV shows (particulaly the cable TV shows and the ATV channels) used alot of music from games and anime, straight from the Soundtrack, and I find it hard to believe that different companies gave them licences to use music from FF8, Resident Evil, Magic Knight Rayearth and other ones I probably dont know in their *crappy* shows, and they were all in one I believe) Hell I even heard the FFX Chocobo theme used in a Jockey Horse Racing commericial, which disgusted me. And ever since I heard of the Plagarising of the theme song from Air, ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_%28...29#Controversy ), I feel that game music is being robbed and exploited to use for commercialism or shows that are so crappy they don't deserve it. ( One extreme case had used John Williams score to Home Alone in the BG for a frantic sequence when Hawkers in HK are all running away in panic cause the cops are coming, they probably switched to game and anime cause less people know them)

On a postive side, a friend of mine who figure skates has heard people using music from games to use as BG music for figure skating, and she said both the skating and the music complimented each other well and was performed lovely.

Anyone have experience with either? Do you remember what music was used? Was it a postive reaction for you or negative?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I heard the song that they use for the evil side's town from Space Cowboy Online's soundtrack. Of all things, I saw it in a Law Firm commercial. O_o If I see it again, I'll write down the name of the Law Firm.

EDIT: The uploaded file is the song i'm talking about.

There was one European commercial that someone showed me once, using a song by Orange Lounge from a Beatmania IIDX game. But then, Orange Lounge songs are supposed to sound a bit like French Pop, so maybe it was really just some famous french song that Orange Lounge borrowed heavily from.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Iron Maiden Tour 2005 Live in Graz: The Band entered the Stage to the arranged Street Fighter II Opening Theme from the "20th anniversary a TRIBUTE to GAME-sounds for music-CD" (disc playback). It was a big surprise to me (I was just like "hey, I know this tune from somewhere"), maybe Dickinson is a Video Game buff. Unfortunately, they didn´t play any Video Game Music themselves. Maiden plays Guilty Gear, now that would have been a surprise.

One of TV channel here, MetroTV once showed an advertisement which using the Battle Music from FFT. At first, I thought I was dreaming, but hey, VGM is not protected by the law here.

I was speaking idiomatically.

well, in short, the existence of VGM is as close to nothingness here. In my country, major label companies like Sony, BMG, etc could do legal action aganist piracy because they have their local reprensentative here. But how about game companies like Square-Enix? Nintendo? Their VGM products dont have legal representative here, their products only known by lesser known of people, incase their products are pirated, there is nothing they could do against it.

But dont worry, VGM is very unpopular here, if piracy were to happen, it would probably happen only in very small sharing community like this.

Yeah, but VGM and anime music is VERY popular in HK, I'm sure a lot of fans have noticed them being used in the HK drama shows, but they probably didnt care enough to report it or something, the Air theme song was different cause it was in a album of some Singapore artist, and they didnt credit any of the composers. Instead of a passing thing like an episode of a show, this was a CD being sold with a plagairsed song, and luckily thanks to fan complaints and reporting to Key, it was answered and actions were taken.

It's naive of the producers to think they can get away with it (its a Taiwan company) when the song is popular among anime fans in HK and Taiwan.

I'd probably send a letter to Square or the other companies that own the music I heard, cept I didnt tape any of them, and they friggin used too many music from different games and anime in one show. It's probably not worth the effort and I don't usally catch them till its over.

Interesting to hear that there are English commercials that used VGM.

And I thought that Ninetendo and Square have USA departments here, if they noticed they probably would have reported to the Japan departement, obviously it wasn't reported or not many really noticed. Its not a matter of no laws or representatives to handle it cause its a foriegn country (look at the Air theme song, it was plagarised in Taiwan and legal action was threatened.), it just that people didn't notice it, but when they do, then those people get in trouble. There are copyright laws everywhere, and just cause the song or music its from another country and is less known in a particular place doesn't excuse it.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I've even heard anime music (specifically, a track from the Ah! My Goddess OVA) being used in a Taiwanese news programme. That was pretty brazen.

Other than that, "Dance of Curse" from the Escaflowne soundtrack in some corny science-fiction drama serial. Probably HK.

In the Winter Olympics (I can't remember which year), Liberi Fatali was playing in one of the competitions. I think it was skating.

In the weather channel here, sometimes they play VG music :D

IIRC, in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, a group of figure swimmers (not sure what that sport is called) had that same song play during their performance.

Man I love to see videos of the performances, like to see how they choreograph it to VGM.

Dance of Curse was used in a drama, possibly HK? The one where the chorus chants Escaflowne in the whole piece? Wow.... Its like they WANT to get caught or something.

Hehe. My hometown is Guangdong (Canton) Province, China, where we can watch both mainland China and HK televisions. As far as I can see, numerous programmes in these channels uses anime, game or film music as background music. Notable examples being CCTV Channel 10 in mainland China using the Gladiator and The Rock themes, a TV programme in Guangdong using music (and even footage) of FFX, a TV contest programme in 2001 using music from FFTactics (Trisections, cool!) etc.

I don't believe they are properly licensed. But according to mainland China laws, it's allowed to use stock music without license in news and informational programmes. But in other situations, it may be considered plagarism.

I could swear I heard a Starcraft song in the movie Fight Club. I will have to watch it again, but there was an ambient piece in the movie which sounded just like the zerg music.

In college, I was a communications major, and I used some VGM in my films. Most notably, in a scene where the main character was running home, I played the music from Space Jarrier. In fact, at the end of that scene, when he runs into his mother and knocks her over, I used the "Aaah, get ready!" SFX from that game.

They should! After all, eddie is based on their mascot, iirc. Ishiwatari is an Iron Maiden fan.

It was the U.S. synchronized swimming team. They took 3rd after (somewhat ironically) Japan, and Russia.

Popped the DVD in my computer just to hunt this down:

its at 1:05:15 when the boss finds the "rules of fight club" in the copier.

I have the song listed as "zerg briefing room" on my soundtrack, but I don't know if the name is correct.

I've heard lots of game, anime, and film music on CCTV4 in the past. Notables include the "sadness theme" of Gundam SEED (Tomo he no Omoi from OST IV is one of the examples of it), the "Honor Him" theme from the Gladiator Soundtrack, lots of themes from Lord of the Rings, and Return of the Ancients from WarCraft III The Frozen Throne EP.

There was this show about a haunted house on the Discovery Channel(I think) that played the Regenerador's theme from Resident Evil 4.

I think in another episode of the same show, the theme of the Leech Hunters from Resident Evil 0 played.
